A statement has been released after Charlton Athletic’s Championship clash with Portsmouth was abandoned following a medical emergency in the crowd on Saturday afternoon. Both sides were hoping to get back to winning ways, but the match was suspended after 12 minutes as a medical team rushed to a Charlton fan’s aid in the Covered End.
Referee Matthew Donohue then ordered the players to leave the pitch in the 19th minute due to the distressing scenes. The supporter was taken away on a stretcher by paramedics after 10 minutes of treatment. The Addicks have been without a win in the Championship since last month’s narrow victory over West Bromwich Albion. They have since suffered defeats to Wrexham, Southampton, Stoke City and table-topping Coventry City.
Charlton were promoted to the second tier at the end of last season, coming through the League One play-offs. Pompey, meanwhile, have been fighting to secure mainstay status since returning to the second tier of English football in 2024. Both clubs will have to wait for a replay after the players never came back out to finish the match.
Charlton Athletic Statement After Medical Emergency in Crowd
A difficult but necessary decision was made in reaction to some worrying scenes in the stadium, as the club wrote on X (see the full post below):
“Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s match has been abandoned. We thank you for your patience and understanding. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders. Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course.”
The condition of the supporter remains unknown after he left the stadium on a stretcher, but as the football world sends its prayers, everyone will be hoping for a positive update in due time.
