Nordi Mukiele Was the Real Sunderland Hero vs Newcastle
Plenty of players walked off the pitch against Newcastle knowing they’d delivered big performances. Granit Xhaka controlled the midfield, Robin Roefs barely made a mistake, Dan Ballard dominated everything that came near him, and Reinildo once again turned his entire flank into a no-go zone.
But even among all of that, one player quietly produced the kind of display that decides matches.
Nordi Mukiele was the real standout.
Andy’s player ratings told the story, but even without them, you didn’t need a spreadsheet to see it. Every time Newcastle tried to build, every time Gordon or Barnes shaped up to run, every time the ball went anywhere near that right-hand channel, the outcome was the same: Mukiele won it, with a 10/10 rating from Andy Tomlinson.
This wasn’t just a good performance. It was the kind that completely tilts the balance of a game – the sort fans remember not for one moment, but for the way it shaped everything around it.
And it’s why, despite Xhaka’s brilliant display, Mukiele deserves the spotlight.
A defensive clinic from start to finish
Newcastle rotated Gordon and Barnes, two players who thrive on isolating defenders and forcing mistakes. Neither got a sniff. Mukiele read every movement, matched every run, and made challenges look routine that would trouble most full-backs in the league.
What made it so impressive was the consistency of it. There was no shaky opening spell, no late drop-off, no moment where Newcastle sensed weakness. Mukiele played as though he’d simply decided that his side of the pitch was off-limits, and that was that.
In the player ratings, it was described as completely shutting down the right-hand side. That’s exactly how it felt: not controlled, not contained – shut down.
The moment that changed everything
Defensive full-backs can dominate games, but it’s the ones who affect things at the other end that usually walk away with the headlines. And Mukiele did that too.
His cross for the winning goal was outstanding: not just accurate, but delivered with intent, pace and confidence. It came at a stage when the match needed someone to provide a moment of clarity, and he stepped up.
On a day when Newcastle’s back line had dealt with most aerial threats well, Mukiele produced one ball they simply couldn’t defend. It’s the sort of moment that separates a strong performance from a decisive one.
Why this mattered more than a typical 10/10
This wasn’t a case of someone playing well while the rest of the team coasted. Far from it – there were excellent displays across the pitch. Ballard was immense. Roefs commanded everything. Xhaka knitted the game together like a captain should. Sadiki’s work rate was relentless.
Yet the match had a certain structure to it, and that structure existed because Mukiele imposed himself early and never relented. He took away Newcastle’s most natural route forward, and once that threat evaporated, everything else fell into place. The midfield looked calmer. The back line held its shape. Even the transitions felt cleaner because there was no chaos coming from that right side.
When supporters call a performance “complete,” this is what they mean: influence at both ends, consistency across 90 minutes, and the sense that without that player, the match could have looked very different.
One of the signings of the summer? Performances like this make the case
Mukiele didn’t arrive with the fanfare that some signings get, but performances like this are the ones that build reputations. Not loud, not flashy – just dominant, reliable and impactful in the biggest moments.
If you were looking for signs that he’s becoming one of the most important additions of the season, this match was full of them. He’s settled, he’s confident, and he’s producing the sort of work that allows everyone else to shine.
Unsung hero? Maybe before. Not anymore.
Xhaka was excellent. A few others were too. But the match belonged to Mukiele.
He didn’t just play his part – he shaped the entire game.
Sometimes the most important performances aren’t the ones that grab the first headline, but the ones you notice the longer you think about the match. Against Newcastle, Mukiele was exactly that.
The player ratings reflected it, the eye test confirmed it, and the outcome was decided by it.
Forget Xhaka for a moment.
The real hero was wearing the number 20, and patrolling that right flank like it was his own.

Chelsea Submit £26m Bid for Sunderland Midfielder Granit Xhaka
Chelsea have reportedly submitted a £26m offer to sign a Chelsea star in the summer transfer window, as personally requested by Xabi Alonso.
The Blues will be looking to back their new manager after he took over earlier this year.
It’s been a difficult period for Chelsea, who won’t be competing in the Champions League next season, and they did superbly to attract a manager of Alonso’s calibre.
The club now needs to back him with new additions in order to suit his style, while the squad also needs a refresh after their disappointing campaign.
GIVEMESPORT sources have confirmed that Chelsea are set to sign Atalanta wing-back Marco Pelestra, kick-starting their summer spending.
Chelsea Submit £26m Bid
According to a report from journalist Luca Cerchione, Chelsea have submitted a £26m bid to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka in the summer transfer window.
The potential signing is believed to have been personally requested by Alonso, who managed Xhaka during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.
It feels unlikely that Sunderland would be willing to accept a bid of just £26 million for Xhaka, considering he was their ‘best‘ player last campaign and won their player of the season award.
Alonso knows the midfielder well, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that they are targeting that profile of signing.

Chelsea Need to Add Experience
Chelsea have heavily focused their recruitment on bringing in young talent from around the world over the last few years.
Although it could be an effective method in the long term, they do lack experience in all positions.
The Blues are one of the most ill-disciplined sides in the Premier League, getting more red cards last season than any other team.
The signing of someone like Xhaka won’t only offer experience in himself. He’s also the type of leader who can help get the best out of other players.
Sunderland managed to qualify for European football last season, despite only being promoted the previous campaign, and Xhaka was a key reason behind that.

According to a report from Team Talk, AC Milan have agreed a club record deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos.
Manchester United held talks with intermediaries representing Ramos earlier in the transfer window, and he was firmly on the radar of the Premier League club.
United didn’t make a formal offer for Ramos, who has been described as ‘elite’, and he is now set to join AC Milan for a fee in the region of £60m, eclipsing their previous record when they signed Rafael Leao for around £43m.
United were among a number of Premier League clubs to have held talks with Ramos, but it’s no surprise that PSG have accepted such a big offer from AC Milan.
