Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has not held back in his comments on Kobbie Mainoo’s lack of game time and the controversy surrounding his brother’s shirt. The Irishman has continued to bemoan the modern state of his beloved club, with his latest scathing critique aimed at the young midfielder – a player who, just 12 months ago, looked set to become a mainstay of the Red Devils’ future plans.
Questions over Mainoo’s future at United have lingered since the summer, with speculation only intensifying amid his lack of minutes under manager Ruben Amorim. The England international reportedly requested a loan move towards the end of the transfer window, but the club refused to let him leave. Mainoo has featured in just 11 Premier League matches under Amorim this season, every single one coming as a substitute.
From FA Cup final hero and Man of the Match in 2024 to now believing his services may be better suited elsewhere, Keane has offered a few blunt words of advice as Mainoo’s career hits a low point.
The brother of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has gone viral for what he was wearing during the Red Devils’ 4-4 draw against Bournemouth.
Keane Vents Frustrations at Kobbie Mainoo’s Attitude
Earlier this week, Mainoo’s half-brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, caused a stir by sporting a ‘free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt during the dramatic 4-4 draw with AFC Bournemouth. Mainoo entered the fray with less than half an hour remaining, marking his third-longest appearance in the league this term.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane branded the gesture idiotic and called on Mainoo to graft his way into the team and prove Amorim wrong. “Are you telling me that he can’t sit there for another six months?,” he said, before continuing, as per the Mirror:
“He might think the manager’s on his way out in the summer. He’s 20 years of age, what’s wrong with sitting and learning your trade? And even if he’s not getting a chance, we’ve all had to do it. Sometimes a manager is on your case and what you have to do is prove them wrong. Jamie made a point that he never felt like a regular at Liverpool, I never felt like that at United.
“Every day is your chance to prove yourself to the manager and when the manager is picking his team, [he goes] ‘he has to play’. He’s got to get that in his mindset.”
He added: “Sometimes, at Man United, the challenge is right in front of you. A footballer’s life is about trying to prove to people wrong. Bruno [Fernandes] might leave next summer. Wait your moment.
“I have no problem with players going out on loan, it can be beneficial for everyone, but sometimes, as a player, your biggest challenge is here, at Manchester United, and it’s about breaking into the team.Even if the manager says ‘you won’t get ahead of Bruno’, prove him WRONG.”
Mainoo’s Brother Slammed in Furious Rant by Keane
Keane got particularly angry on the topic of Mainoo’s brother, as he continued (watch the segment below): “And when he’s got his idiot of a brother doing all that… we shouldn’t even be giving that kind of stuff the time of day.
“Sometimes you’re just surrounded by idiots, especially the families. Did your brother ever do that? [asking Ian Wright] If my brother ever did that, I’d have looked at him like ‘what are you doing?'”
Despite all the speculation surrounding Mainoo, Amorim has declined to confirm whether a loan move in January would be approved. “I had some conversations with him, especially last year, and with other players, but about that subject, no, I didn’t speak with him,” he said.
Arsenal have opened talks to sign a Manchester City midfielder in the summer transfer window as they look to bolster Mikel Arteta’s young options.
It’s not so often you see players move between Arsenal and Man City, although there have been a handful in recent years.

After securing the signatures of some new additions in the middle of the park, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see United move on to different areas of the pitch.
There is no doubt the midfield is a major priority, but due to competing in the Champions League, they will need to reinforce multiple areas.
The Red Devils face competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and they are actively seeking reinforcements in defence.
The Bundesliga club could charge up to £43m to allow Coulibaly to depart this summer. At the age of 19, he’s seen as a potential long-term investment for interested parties.
Werder Bremen are hoping to keep Coulibaly, described as ‘elite’, for another season, whether that be through rejecting any potential bids or inserting a loan-back clause in any deal.

They are yet to confirm a new signing in the middle of the park, and although there is plenty of time remaining, they could continue to miss out on key targets.
With Casemiro already through the exit door and Manuel Ugarte suffering a serious injury, United are desperate for midfield reinforcements.
Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson were both key targets for the Red Devils, but they failed to get their signatures as they moved to other Premier League clubs.
