How Shettima, Akpabio, Abbas rallied APC behind Tinubu; stressed legislative backing

By Johnbosco Agbakwuru, Abuja
Ahead of the 2027 election, the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima; President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Friday, rallied support for President Bola Tinubu.
The APC party leaders gave their support at the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
They called for unity, disciplined expansion and closer legislative, executive coordination ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They said the future and strength of the party revolved around institutional memory, political coalition-building, coherent lawmaking and avoidance of internal fragmentation as the ruling party prepares for a decisive electoral cycle.
Shettima
Senator Shettima paid a glowing tribute to Tinubu’s political evolution, crediting him with sustaining Nigeria’s opposition structures well before the 2013 merger that birthed the APC.
He said Nigeria’s current political map, including the party’s control of 28 states, was rooted in resistance to one-party dominance and the willingness of some leaders to organise when it was risky to do so.
“Politics rewards memory, and today memory must begin with gratitude,” he told NEC members.
“Nigeria’s opposition did not survive by accident. It survived because one man refused to surrender the political space.”
Shettima said electoral outcomes will be shaped by coalitions, credibility and political judgment rather than social-media agitation.
“People do not cross over because of slogans,” he said.
“Elections are not won on Facebook or Twitter; they are won by coalitions, credibility and conviction.”
He warned that incumbency alone cannot secure a second cycle, describing 2027 as a responsibility requiring discipline, organisation and an understanding of past lessons.
Akpabio
Senate President Akpabio pledged continued National Assembly backing for Tinubu’s reform agenda, saying lawmakers had processed executive bills and requests “timely” to stabilise governance.
He aligned himself with the presentations of the APC National Chairman, the Progressive Governors’ Forum and the Speaker, saying the documents would guide deliberations when the Senate reconvenes next week.
Akpabio urged governors to work more deliberately with legislators at state and federal levels, arguing that the assembly is closest to the grassroots and essential to democratic consensus.
“In democracy, the National Assembly becomes paramount and therefore needs to be consulted,” he said.
He also announced that amendments to the Electoral Act would be concluded before the end of January to provide clear timelines for congresses, primaries and the 2027 contest, saying legislative adjustments must prevent pre-election administrative gaps.
Akpabio joined governors in approving a fresh vote of confidence on Tinubu, describing the President as navigating “difficult terrain” and insisting that reforms in the economy and security were beginning to show results.
Abbas
Speaker Abbas focused on delivery and institutional alignment, urging the APC to deepen internal cohesion and view governance “as a contract between the party and the Nigerian people.”
He argued that while parties win elections, institutions deliver outcomes, and history will judge whether APC-led authorities connected the two.
Abbas commended Tinubu’s willingness to pursue “difficult but necessary” reforms and said the House had tried to stabilise them through law, oversight and public representation.
He cited House performance statistics, 2,263 bills processed between June 2023 and June 2025, 237 passed and 68 assented to, calling it the most productive two-year stretch since 1999. Almost 80 per cent of enacted laws originated from private-member bills.
He said these figures demonstrated a cultural shift toward planning, discipline and prioritisation.
Oversight, he noted, had recovered mismanaged funds and improved compliance among ministries and agencies, while inclusion efforts had expanded access for women, youth and persons with disabilities.
Turning to internal politics, Abbas warned that the APC “is not the same party it was in 2015, 2019 or 2023” and that managing relations between founding and newer blocs must become a strategic priority.
“If not handled with sensitivity, fairness and institutional discipline, it can lead to fragmentation, a luxury the party cannot afford,” he said.
He proposed three mechanisms to safeguard cohesion: a quarterly governance-delivery dashboard; a legislative-executive programme grid tracking manifesto promises, bills and budget lines; and stronger internal dispute resolution.
He also called for more rigour in candidate selection to avoid electoral liabilities.

Sharafadeen Alli receives INEC form as APC Oyo guber candidate
Sharafadeen Alli on Thursday formally received the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, nomination form as the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate for the 2027 general election in Oyo State.
At the event, the senator also unveiled Michael Adedeji as his running mate for the election.
Adedeji, 46, is an Economics graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University and hails from Iwo-Ate in Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Oyo State APC Chairman and former deputy governor, Moses Alake Adeyemo, called on party members to remain united and work collectively toward reclaiming power in the 2027 governorship election.
Adeyemo stressed that the APC stood a better chance of advancing the state’s development while in government and appealed to aggrieved members to put aside their differences in the interest of the party.
“By the grace of God, come May 29, 2027, our governor and deputy governor will be Senator Sharafadeen Alli and Adesoji Adedeji. I plead with us in the name of the Lord to come together,” he said.
Presenting the INEC nomination form to Alli, the APC Deputy National Auditor, Gbenga Olayemi, described the governorship candidate as a symbol of the party’s collective aspiration rather than an individual contestant.
“You will recall that I presented the nomination forms to National Assembly candidates on Monday. Senator Alli is not just our governorship candidate; he is our flag bearer. Every APC member in Oyo State is a governorship candidate,” Olayemi stated.
In his acceptance speech, Alli described his emergence as the APC candidate as a shared victory for all members of the party and pledged to govern with fairness, accountability and inclusiveness if elected.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the APC National Working Committee, party leaders in Oyo State, security agencies and party faithful for their support throughout the primary process.
The senator also acknowledged the contributions of other aspirants and appealed to them and their supporters to rally behind the APC ahead of the governorship poll.
According to him, the mission of reclaiming Oyo State requires unity, sacrifice and collective commitment from all party members.
“Our people are yearning for leadership that listens, unites and understands their pains. They deserve a government that works for everyone, regardless of religion, ethnicity, social class or geopolitical zone,” Alli said.
He outlined plans to prioritise agriculture, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, infrastructure development, environmental protection and inclusive economic growth if elected governor.
Alli further pledged to align his administration with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu through policies anchored on justice, fairness, accountability and service delivery.
“I will remain accessible, accountable and a good listener. I will never take the trust of the people for granted. Let us reject division, embrace unity and work together to restore the true Pacesetter glory of Oyo State,” he added.
In his remarks, Adedeji thanked the APC leadership for the confidence reposed in him and expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious in the 2027 governorship election.
The event was attended by members of the APC State Working Committee led by Adeyemo, National Assembly and State Assembly candidates, party leaders and stakeholders, including Ayo Adeseun, Hosea Agboola, Femi Lanlehin, Fatai Ibikunle, Timothy Jolaoso and Olayide Abbas, among others.

2027: ‘End to judicial manipulation’ – ADC reacts to judgement affirming David Mark’s leadership
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has described as an end to judicial manipulation the judgment affirming former Senate President, David Mark, as the duly leader of the party.
This is contained in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Thursday.
The ADC said the judgment affirmed its clear position that the issue of leadership remains an internal affair of the party and is therefore not justiciable, especially in light of the Electoral Act, 2022.
Abdullahi added that the emergence of the current leadership led by David Mark, was carried out in accordance with the law and constitution of the ADC.
According to him, at a time when millions of Nigerians are confronted daily with worsening insecurity, an unbearable cost of living, rising unemployment and declining economic opportunities, their responsibility as a serious opposition party is to present practical solutions as alternatives to the people.
“While we view the ruling as yet another victory for multiparty democracy in Nigeria, it is their hope that this judgment will help bring to an end all the unnecessary distractions and attempts at judicial manipulation by those who are hell-bent on destabilising the opposition and foisting a one-party rule on the country.
“Even as we celebrate this victory in court, we remain vigilant, convinced that anti-democratic forces remain active and motivated to continue to pursue their inglorious agenda against the Nigerian people.
“We commend the courage shown by the presiding judge in standing firmly on the side of justice. We commend, especially, the Judge’s decision to award fines against the Plaintiff and his lawyers, hoping that this measure will serve as a deterrent to those who may want to pursue such frivolous actions in the future,” the statement read in part.
DAILY POST reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday affirmed David Mark leadership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Lagos 2027: How I will contest without Peter Obi’s influence -Rhodes-Vivour
The Lagos State African Democratic Congress, ADC, governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has revealed how he would contest without the influence of the former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, or the Obidient movement.
Featuring in an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ on Thursday, Rhodes-Vivour insisted that years of grassroots mobilisation have positioned him for the contest.
He was responding to questions on how he intends to prosecute his campaign after Obi’s exit from the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, amid the party’s internal legal disputes.
He said that he would navigate the election by doing the work, arguing that his political profile and grassroots network had grown considerably since the 2023 governorship election.
“Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of 2023 is not Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of 2026. We have been doing the work, we have been building structures in communities, we have entrenched ourselves. We are standing for the people,” he said.
According to the ADC governorship candidate, his engagement with residents affected by demolitions across Lagos had strengthened his connection with communities and reinforced his vision for the state.
“We had a fantastic run in 2023. His Excellency Peter Obi, fantastic candidate, there are no issues between us. I just felt that Lagos has a peculiar type of politics that needs a broad-based coalition across generations, across tribes, across people with different experiences and we achieved that,” he added.
