Published

on

Summary

  • The 20 managers with the most points in Premier League history have been named.
  • Longevity has helped the likes of Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce, who make the top 10.
  • Pep Guardiola remains just under 1000 points behind first place.

The well-documented Premier League has seen some of the very best managers grace its presence over three decades of its existence. From those who led with the old-school philosophy of English football to those in recent years who have revolutionised the way the game is played with gegenpress or tiki-taka tactics.

What has been proven throughout the years is that there is no single method for success, as this variety of styles has helped many managers amass an impressive number of points. But who has accrued the most? GIVEMESPORT has the answer as we rank the 20 managers who have won the most points in the Premier League era.

The 15 Best Managers in Premier League History Based on Stats

Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson boast some of the best points-per-match averages in Premier League history.

Before heading into the top ten, let’s pay our respects to those that may not be thought of in the same vein but are perhaps considered the cult heroes of English top flight football – and that starts with Alan Curbishley, Kevin Keegan and Gerard Houlier on 410, 413 and 419 points, respectively. Keegan, especially, is remembered for his stint in charge of Newcastle United, which included his infamous rant at Sir Alex Ferguson.

Back to points tallies and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe quickly follow with just 20 points separating the pair, who have the chance to rise up the rankings in years to come.

Unless he returns to manage in England before calling it time on his managerial career, the same cannot be said for ex-Liverpool man Brendan Rodgers, who was replaced by none other than Jurgen Klopp in late 2015. The Northern Irish boss has picked up 488 points throughout his managerial career in the Premier League – but that’s 17 short of Martin O’Neill’s tally of 505.

Roy Hodgson and Mauricio Pochettino, who managed at the likes of Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, then follow in 13th and 12th, respectively. Unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the top ten is Steve Bruce, who picked up 531 points across spells at Newcastle United and Birmingham City.

Mark Hughes

601 points

Football manager Mark Hughes.

A Premier League winner as a player at Manchester United, Mark Hughes may not have ever reached the same heights on the touchline, but he has still carved out a respectable career for himself as a boss in England’s top flight. Having had stints in charge of the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, and Stoke City, the former striker has managed to notch up 601 points.

This tally is enough to take the Welshman above former teammate Steve Bruce, who sits in 11th. While it is unlikely that Hughes will get another job in the big time management sphere, there is no immediate threat to his spot in the top 10 as things currently stand. That’s unless Arteta or Howe stick around for the next few years.

9

Rafael Benitez

605 points

Former Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez

He may have spent time at four Premier League clubs, but it’s pretty clear that the majority of Rafael Benitez‘s 605 points came during his six-year spell with Liverpool on the red half of Merseyside. While he never won an English league title at Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United, or Everton, the former Valencia boss did manage success in other competitions during this period of his career.

TNT Sports' Peter Crouch

Crouch drew Benitez at Liverpool’s Secret Santa – and he didn’t disappoint

There have been a whole host of Spanish managers who have gone on to impress at the highest level, and Benitez is up there with them. Ahea of the curve was Benitez and that was proved by his willingness to extract and utilise data, which made him one of the first to introduce that way of thinking to English football. Now 65 years of age and beyond the apex of his career in the dugout, Benitez is in charge of Panathinaikos in Greece.

8

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce named England XI he would have won 2022 World Cup with

Never forget that, in his final run as a Premier League boss, Sam Allardyce walked into a troubled Leeds team, declared himself the best manager in the division, and oversaw the Elland Road outfit’s relegation back to the Championship. To be fair, Allardyce must have known he was walking into a poisoned chalice with little chance of survival. But if anyone could do it, he could.

During his journeyman career, the former England head honcho (albeit for a singular game) had a knack for pulling a rabbit out of the hat and leading teams to safety after taking over mid-season, seemingly needing a miracle. He also built an incredibly underrated team at Bolton that saw stars like Jay-Jay Okocha and Nicolas Anelka flourish as the Wanderers pushed for Europe. All in a day’s work for Big Sam.

7

Jurgen Klopp

705 points

Jurgen Klopp

The first manager inside the top 10 to have lifted the famous trophy. Had it not been for the fact that Jurgen Klopp was up against arguably the greatest team in football history when battling for supremacy, he might have won more. The German was an inspirational figure at Liverpool, turning the Reds from a team closer to mid-table finishes than Europe to one that was among the best on the continent.

Perhaps the biggest tip of the hat you can give to the now-Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull is that he left a steady ship for Arne Slot to benefit from, as the Merseysiders had not missed a step since the Dutchman’s appointment. Things have changed nowadays but Slot has every reason to thank Klopp for leaving his squad in such a healthy position.

6

Jose Mourinho

735 points

Jose Mourinho

Very few people have come to the Premier League and immediately dominated quite like the ‘Special One’ did when he first arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2004. The mercurial Jose Mourinho had that special touch, and was exactly what the west London outfit needed to become an unstoppable force in English football for a two-year period.

Subsequent, and less fruitful, spells at Manchester United and in north London with Spurs followed, and it feels as though, nowadays, top-level football has passed by the current Benfica boss. However, his legacy is one that will remain intact, as the Portuguese remains one of the most recognisable faces in Premier League history.

5

Pep Guardiola

828 points

Speaking of Mourinho, one of his biggest managerial rivals has recently overtaken him for a place inside the top five – that man, of course, is Pep Guardiola. The Catalan-born tactician has done the same thing at Manchester City as he did at Barcelona and Bayern Munich: build a well-oiled machine that has rarely been stopped during the decade he has resided in England.

Guardiola is over three-quarters of the way to 1,000 points, which is an unbelievable feat only three men have achieved in the history of the Premier League. Even if he doesn’t manage to reach that tally, which he may not given reports have suggested that 2025/26 will be his concluding campaign with his current employers, he is already one of the best the division has ever seen.

4

Harry Redknapp

878 points

Harry Redknapp in a suit

A national treasure in England as much as a Premier League legend, it is impossible not to love Harry Redknapp. As a personality, he is one of a kind, and as a manager, he is also incredibly accomplished. Apart from his time at Tottenham Hotspur, Redknapp was never in charge of a team challenging towards the top end of the top flight, yet his record speaks for itself.

Brian Clough and Sir Bobby Robson

13 Greatest English Managers in Football History (Ranked)

Former England boss Gareth Southgate ranks among the top 10 managers the country has ever seen.

Part of that success is down to his impressive longevity at the top of the managerial food chain. While he was often managing teams that found themselves dwelling in the middle of England’s primary division or below, the wily veteran was able to have a lengthy run in the Premier League and, as a result, racked up a mighty 878 points.

3

David Moyes

1,048 points

David Moyes

As mentioned earlier, only three managers have hit the 1000-point mark and David Moyes is the first of the exclusive club. The Scot, now 62 years of age, is often tarnished by his ill-fated reign as Manchester United boss, but that doesn’t take away from the incredible work he did at Everton and the underrated job he managed across his two spells at the London Stadium.

Of the three managers in Premier League history to have picked up north of 1,000 points, Moyes is the only to still be plying his trade as a manager – and should he land himself another job in the English top flight after his Hill Dickinson Stadium spell comes to a close, you could see him extend his the gap between himself and Redknapp.

2

Arsene Wenger

1,627 points

Wenger

Given that he has managed more games in the Premier League than anyone else, it is no surprise that Arsene Wenger is one half of the duo to have not just surpassed but smashed the 1000-point total. The Frenchman’s appointment at Arsenal was a curious one at first, with “Arsene who?” being a common sentiment.

During his tenure, Wenger built some of the best teams in the division, signed some of the greatest players the Premier League has ever seen, and remains the only manager to have completed an invincible campaign. If it weren’t for one other iconic figure, he would no doubt be number one. But it seemed one manager just always found a way to have the beating of him.

Tottenham Suffer Sandro Tonali Transfer Blow

Published

on

By

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a significant blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as Manchester City have now joined the race to sign the Italian, according to Chronicle Live.

Tonali enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 season, despite the Magpies’ struggles, scoring three goals and registering six assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. This campaign has sparked interest in the 26-year-old from a host of top clubs, including Spurs, Manchester United, Arsenal and now Man City.

Tottenham are understood to be frontrunners in the chase for the Italy international, although a twist in the saga has seemingly now unfolded.

Newcastle are braced for a bidding war between interested parties, with City’s emerging interest set to prompt an intense transfer battle.

Tottenham have reportedly already agreed personal terms with Tonali, while other reports suggest that they’ve tabled a bid worth around £75 million for the midfield maestro, which was swiftly rejected by Newcastle.

These developments seem to indicate that Spurs are well out in front in the race for the former AC Milan man’s signature, although Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder reports that Man City have entered the fray, as expected.

Sources close to Tonali’s camp describe City as genuine candidates to lure the player away from Tyneside this summer. Enzo Maresca is understood to be a keen admirer of the energetic number eight, and the Citizens are now prepared to hijack Tottenham’s move for him.

City would “easily match” Spurs’ £275,000-per-week contract offer to Tonali, according to the report, as they look to bolster a midfield department which has lost Bernardo Silva and needs a long-term replacement for Rodri.

The north-west outfit may have just splashed £116million on Elliot Anderson, but they’re eager to provide new manager Enzo Maresca with additional midfield firepower to ensure he has the tools to field a competitive team in the post-Pep Guardiola era.

City’s Tonali interest a serious blow for Tottenham

Spurs have seemingly set their sights on Tonali and may have begun preparing for life with the Newcastle man. Roberto De Zerbi holds a close relationship with the player’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, and this link may have been the catalyst for this deal developing to the stage it has.

However, City’s interest presents a spanner in the works for the Lilywhites. The temptation of playing for a club expected to compete for major honours, rather than a side rebuilding after near relegation, could well be too much for Tonali to turn down.

Spurs are now at serious risk of missing out on their top midfield target, which would force them to assess other options. Mateus Fernandes has been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although West Ham are supposedly looking for an excessive fee for the Portuguese midfielder.

Celtic Receive Approach For ‘Outstanding’ €25m Star

Published

Celtic may be forced to cash in on star player Arne Engels this summer as clubs across the Premier League and Europe circle for the Belgian midfielder’s signature.

The Scottish giants will be hoping for a less chaotic season this campaign after last term saw two permanent managers depart with Martin O’Neill signing a permanent deal following two interim spells in charge.

O’Neill did lead the Parkhead club to the Premiership title on the final day, edging Hearts in a dramatic 3-1 win, as well as the Scottish FA Cup, beating Dunfermline in the final, also by a 3-1 scoreline.

Alongside their league campaign, Celtic once again competed in Europe, reaching the first knockout stage before losing to Stuttgart.

Now, with numerous high profile clubs targeting a move for Engels, the 22-year-old is likely to seek a new challenge this summer. Although Premier League clubs have been linked with a move, an Italian side are the latest to have approached Celtic.

Roma targeting Engels

AS Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini

According to Il Messaggero, via Sport Witness, Italian outfit AS Roma have made ‘initial contact’ with Engels’ representatives in ‘recent days’.

Roma are prepared to lose France midfielder Manu Kone this summer and are seeking potential alternatives. The report adds that Celtic value Engels at around €20-25million, a fee the Italian side could afford.

Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are two of the English clubs that have been named as other potential destinations for the 22-year-old.

Forest are set to receive a major windfall from selling Elliot Anderson to Manchester City in a deal worth in excess of £116million while Palace have Europa League football on offer this season after the Europa Conference League triumph.

Since his move to Celtic from Augsburg in 2024, Engels has comfortably been one of the Hoops’ best players and now seems to have outgrown the Scottish Premiership.

The midfielder made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring seven goals and registering eight assists, scoring vital goals in title-clinching victories against Hearts and Dunfermline.

Labelled “outstanding” by former manager Brendan Rodgers, Engels still has two years left on his current Celtic deal and is also a senior Belgium international with four caps to his name. Therefore, the Hoops could demand more than the €20million to 25million quoted, especially if selling to an English club.

A number of Celtic players of the past have made the move from Parkhead to the Premier League and done well, but Roma could also be an attractive proposition with the Italian side qualifying for the Champions League after their third-place finish in Serie A.

Man Utd Could Save £100m by Reintegrating Marcus Rashford

Published

Manchester United could save themselves over £100m in the summer transfer window after an update emerged from Fabrizio Romano.

It’s been a busy summer transfer window for the Red Devils as they look to improve their squad in order to prepare for a season in the Champions League.

The main focus has been on looking to bring in new midfielders, but there’s no doubt they could also be aiming to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.

Competing in the Champions League is a huge boost for the Red Devils, but it also means they need a bigger and more competitive squad.

United were without the distraction of European football last season, which undoubtedly helped Michael Carrick to turn things back in the right direction.

Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers in the summer transfer window, with the Midlands club demanding over £100m to allow him to depart.

The Red Devils are clearly looking to strengthen in the forward line, not just in midfield, with Rogers one of the reported targets.

Despite that, United could save themselves over £100m after a recent claim by Italian journalist Romano.

The respected reporter has suggested that United have held talks with Marcus Rashford, and they are now open to welcoming him back to training to start pre-season with Carrick.

There’s no guarantee that he will remain at the club, but it appears the doors have been opened for him to reintegrate back into the senior squad.

This could save United millions if they bring Rashford back into the fold as an option on the left-hand side of attack rather than splashing out on Rogers.

Rashford Could Explode Under Carrick

With the style that Carrick has looked to implement at Old Trafford, Rashford could be an ideal player for his system.

The England international is deadly in transition, and United have looked to play counter-attacking football under Carrick in his short period in charge.

United already have Matheus Cunha, who plays on the left-hand side, so there’s no need for them to splash out on someone like Rogers, especially when they can reintegrate Rashford.

The former Barcelona loanee could explode under Carrick, and if they are struggling to offload him this summer, it makes sense to give him another opportunity under the new manager.
