Ekiti 2026: Fajuyi accuses Oyebanji, INEC of orchestrating removal of PDP candidate from list
Former Chairman of Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State and the representative of a political pressure group, Ekiti Liberation Agenda, ELA, Motunde Fajuyi, has accused the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan of masterminding the alleged removal of the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Wole Oluyede from INEC’s official list of candidates.
Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti, Fajuyi alleged that the omission of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate from the published INEC list was not accidental but a deliberate act driven by political manipulation, to stop Oluyede from contesting in the forthcoming June 20 governorship poll in the state.
She claimed that Oluyede had emerged from a free and fair primary election duly monitored and reportedly cleared by INEC officials, questioning why his name was later excluded without any formal explanation.
Fajuyi further alleged that the decision was influenced by the incumbent state government, claiming that those who approached the INEC Chairman were told he was ‘acting on orders’.
According to her, the controversy surrounding the PDP candidate’s omission compounded earlier grievances within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where she alleged that credible aspirants, including Engineer Kayode Ojo and another female aspirant, Abimbola Olajumoke, were unjustly disqualified without reasons during party primaries.
She said these developments prompted her decision to step aside from partisan politics and join other concerned citizens to form the Ekiti Liberation Agenda, which she described as a platform to resist what she termed systemic injustice and political exclusion in the state.
She called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, warning that continued silence by authorities could heighten tension in the state.
She demanded the immediate restoration of Oluyede’s name to the INEC list, insisting that failure to do so would deepen political discontent in the state.
Her words, “Forget about the lies, forget about the misconceptions of so many things or misrepresentations. I was in the state when it was created, we know a bit about here, we have not had it this bad.
“When the politics is being played in such a way that will not encourage the best option, we have issues where the ruling government disqualified one of our daughters and one of our sons, Engineer Kayode Ojo and Jumoke.
“No reasons were adduced for their disqualification, nobody does that, the ruling government is just the ruling party that is taking everybody for granted. I was a member of APC but because of what happened, I had to step aside.
“And we heard some terrible stories about how Ekiti money was being taken to negotiate things so that there won’t be a contest. And they came around to make a sham of the primaries. It’s not my business because I’m not a party member. The party members should complain, not me. But Nigeria is such that shutting your mouth, being muted, has become the trademark but some of us cannot just be muted. We cannot be shut down or shut up.
“But that’s okay, it’s their internal thing. Now, INEC published their list and they omitted the PDP candidate, Dr Wole Oluyede who had free and fair primaries. If they had issues at their party. I’m not a PDP member either, they know how to treat it internally but INEC was there. I have read the report of INEC.
“Why will INEC now say they are not listing his name? It has been alleged that the same incumbent here now is the one using INEC because when it got to the INEC chairman, he said he’s acting on orders. In a democracy, some of us we talk, even when those who are supposed to talk are not talking, we will talk. It is not for a person to just manipulate anyhow.
“It cannot be treated as a doormat. All these things have been in the papers, in the news. Online, in the print media, in the electronic media. Yet, the leaders there are not doing anything about it.
“Mr. President, if he doesn’t want fire to start burning from Ekiti, to please take cognizance of what is happening and rectify them. Ekiti is such a place that good will always start from and the other good will always start from here.
“So, let it be that the powers that be please intervene. We don’t just disqualify the best of our packs. How will you want to be in a position you don’t want to contest? Contest takes you to where you want to lead. So that is the major focus here and Ekiti has had enough of all this rigmaroling and twisting us. I represent Ekiti Liberation Agenda, we won’t be slaves to anybody again.
“But how can somebody have gone to the primaries in his party and has done it well and INEC has clarified and has agreed that it was a properly conducted primary and say you are removing his name. Let his name be restored, or there will be issues.
“Let Amupitan deny it, because I know those who went to him have him on record and they can come out and testify to that. I’m not PDP. I’m not APC. I’m not at any party. ELA is a brainchild of some of us who felt concerned that it is being maltreated, it’s being short changed. And we came together recently, about two months ago, to say enough is enough. But then the PDP thing now became the height of it, it became the abrasion of the wound.
“ELA that you are talking about is not known in the political participation of any election in Ekiti, they are just meddlesome interlopers.
“It is not possible for APC to mastermind the exclusion of any person, or to disqualify our member, but the national headquarters who conduct the primary, having not met some qualifications.

Kwankwaso fires back at Ali Modu Sheriff, affirms Peter Obi’s Northern support
Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims by former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi lacks significant political support in Northern Nigeria.
The remarks were contained in a statement posted on Kwankwaso’s official page on July 7, 2026, in reaction to an interview Sheriff granted to Channels Television on Monday.
According to the former Kano state governor, Sheriff’s comments did not reflect the political reality in the North, insisting that Obi recorded about 2.8 million votes across the region during the last presidential election.
Kwankwaso argued that with what he described as growing dissatisfaction over the performance of the All Progressives Congress-led administration and the addition of a Northern figure to the “OK” presidential ticket, the alliance remains a strong political force in the region.
“For the record, in his first outing on the presidential ballot, Mr. Obi secured approximately 2.8 million votes in the region — a remarkable achievement that cannot be dismissed lightly,” Kwankwaso said.
He also rejected Sheriff’s claim that Kano voters would not support Obi, maintaining that residents of the state have consistently backed candidates endorsed by the Kwankwasiyya movement.
“The good people of Kano are neither bigoted nor xenophobic. They have consistently demonstrated strong trust in the Kwankwasiyya movement and will support any credible ticket presented under its banner,” he stated.
Kwankwaso further advised Sheriff to focus on the security and humanitarian challenges facing Borno State instead of making what he described as divisive political comments, adding that the “OK” ticket offers Nigerians an opportunity to reset the country and promote competence, unity and progress.

ADC, ICPC clash over El-Rufai’s hospital visit, detention conditions
By Luminous Jannamike
ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, yesterday traded accusations over the hospital visit and detention conditions of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
While the ADC accused the anti-graft agency of denying El-Rufai adequate medical care and violating his rights in detention, the ICPC alleged that the former governor abused a court-approved medical visit and breached the conditions under which it was granted.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC alleged that El-Rufai was taken to the National Hospital, Abuja, where doctors recommended that he be admitted because of his deteriorating health.
According to the party, ICPC officials rejected the recommendation and insisted on returning him to custody.
The ADC further claimed that protests by El-Rufai’s wife and personal physician over the decision led to a confrontation during which his wife was assaulted and the doctor arrested.
“Against the hospital’s advice that he would require hospitalisation in view of his failing health, officials of the ICPC insisted on returning him into custody. Protests by his personal physician and his wife led to scuffles during which his wife was assaulted and the doctor subsequently arrested,” Abdullahi alleged.
The opposition party described the development as an assault on constitutional rights, due process and human dignity, alleging that El-Rufai had also been denied access to his family and personal physician despite a court order permitting such access.
It accused President Bola Tinubu of bearing responsibility for El-Rufai’s continued detention, describing the former governor as a political prisoner.
“The world should know today that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is holding a political prisoner in Nigeria by the name of Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai,” Abdullahi said.
However, the ICPC rejected the allegations and accused El-Rufai of violating the purpose of a court-approved medical visit.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, John Odey, the Commission said the Kaduna State High Court had fixed July 6, 7 and 8 for accelerated hearing of criminal charges against El-Rufai, but proceedings could not commence after he allegedly declined to leave custody for court, insisting on consulting his personal physician.
The Commission said no prior request had been made for the consultation and that when questioned by its medical doctor, El-Rufai reportedly stated that he had no immediate medical complaints but wanted to see his physician at the request of his wife, Asia El-Rufai, who is also one of his counsel.
According to the ICPC, the court subsequently adjourned proceedings until July 15 to hear El-Rufai’s application seeking the recusal of the trial judge and to await a directive from the Kaduna State Chief Judge on a pending request for transfer of the case.
The anti-graft agency said it nevertheless facilitated the hospital visit in compliance with the court’s directives and its obligation to ensure the welfare of persons in custody.
The Commission said its medical and security personnel accompanied El-Rufai to the private wing of the National Hospital and remained outside the consultation room while he was examined by an oncologist.
The ICPC said concerns arose after photographs surfaced on Facebook showing El-Rufai with his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, and three other individuals during the hospital visit.
The photographs were reportedly posted by El-Rufai’s political associate, Isa Kudan, who stated that they had just concluded a meeting with the former governor.
“The images and post by Isa Kudan indicated that the arranged medical visit was utilised for activities outside the scope contemplated by the court and the ICPC. This is a clear violation of the court order,” the Commission stated.
The ICPC said the development led to the arrest of Professor Bello Abubakar for allegedly making false statements and disclosed that it would bring the matter to the attention of the court.
