Labour Party not for sale, Usman tells Abure, others

…demands Abure’s prosecution for impersonation

By John Alechenu

Abuja: The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has issued a sharp rebuke to Barrister Julius Abure, for parading himself as the party’s National Chairman after the Supreme Court Judgement of April 4th, 2025, as well as an unambiguous declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stating otherwise.

In a statement signed by the party’s Interim National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwochocha, in Abuja, on Monday, the Usman-led interim executive called on the Prosecutor-General of the Federation to expedite action on recommendations for Abure’s prosecution for impersonation and sundry other alleged offences.

The Interim Chairman issued the statement in response to an earlier statement issued by Abure. Abure had in his statement said INEC’s position on its refusal to upload the particulars of LP aspirants for February’s Council polls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as the Supreme Court judgement were being misconstrued.

Usman said, “The Labour Party is not for sale. Mr. Abure and his associates should seek legitimate means of livelihood rather than attempting to commercialize political structures.

“It is also instructive from INEC’s statement that Mr. Abure and his drowning disciples of political party merchants have metamorphosed into vexatious and abusive litigants, having instituted over twenty (20) court cases against INEC and the Labour Party leadership, led by Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman and Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha, across various courts in the Federation and the FCT in particular.

“This conduct represents a blatant abuse of court processes and a desperate attempt to plunge the Labour Party into deeper crisis and roll back democratic gains.

“It is therefore delusional, and a clear manifestation of political amnesia, for Mr. Abure to claim that the new leadership of INEC has ‘moved on’ with his impersonation of the office of National Chairman of the Labour Party.

“This claim was made in response to a statement where INEC merely drew his attention to subsisting Supreme Court and Federal High Court judgments that had sacked him.

“In compliance with these judgments, INEC rightly refused to issue access codes for upload of the names of individuals he had allegedly defrauded by illegally collecting monies from them under the false promise of making them candidates in the FCT elections.

“We call on the Prosecutor-General of the Federation to expedite action on recommendations for Mr. Abure’s prosecution for his alleged offences.

“As reaffirmed in the communiqué of our National Working Committee, the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, and committed to building a Nigeria founded on justice, equity, and good governance, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, (National Leader), Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman (National Chairman), and Distinguished Senator Darlington Nwokocha (National Secretary).

“We urge our members, especially our youths and women participating in the ongoing registration and congresses, as well as aspirants preparing for the 2027 elections, to remain steadfast. The future of a new Nigeria lies firmly in our collective resolve.”

Nasarawa senator dumps ADC, joins APM weeks after leaving PDP

Nasarawa South senator, Ogoshi Onawo, has dumped the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, less than two weeks after joining the party.

His letter of defection was read at the plenary on Tuesday by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau.

The lawmaker, in the letter, said he resigned his membership of the ADC in Galadima Ward, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, with effect from June 15.

Onawo disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political associates and other key stakeholders.

“This decision is the outcome of careful reflection and wide-ranging consultations with my constituents, political associates, and other critical stakeholders,” the letter read.

According to him, the move was necessitated by the internal challenges facing the ADC.

“It is driven by my firm belief that the prevailing circumstances within the current party structure and the endless legal battle it is currently embroiled in no longer offer the cohesion, support, and enabling environment required for me to focus squarely on effectively representing my constituents and to fully realise the development and progressive mandate they entrusted me.

“However, I now happily join the Allied Peoples Movement, APM. I am grateful for the trust and cooperation I have received from my supporters and well-wishers through this journey,” he added.

DAILY POST reports that his defection came only weeks after he left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the ADC.

He was among nine senators who announced their defection to the ADC during a Senate plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on March 12.

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for their first term have backed the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu while expressing concern over the country’s security challenges.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the APC first-term governors’ meeting held on Tuesday in Kebbi State.

The communiqué was presented by the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, on behalf of the governors.

The governors acknowledged the economic challenges facing Nigerians but said they believed the ongoing reforms were necessary to address the country’s fiscal, security and development challenges.

They said the reforms were aimed at stabilising the economy, restoring public finances, attracting investment, improving productivity and laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.

The governors also called on Nigerians to remain united and support the implementation of the reforms while urging governments at all levels to strengthen relief measures and social protection programmes for vulnerable citizens.

On security, they expressed concern over persistent insecurity, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, attacks on schools and other violent crimes across parts of the country.

They pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities to improve security and protect lives and property.

The governors also condemned the abduction of children, attacks on schools and the killing of innocent citizens, calling for intensified efforts to rescue victims and prosecute those responsible.

The communiqué further expressed concern over reported attacks and killings involving Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, condemning xenophobia and urging the South African authorities to investigate the incidents and ensure the protection of foreign nationals.

2027: APC may lose Kwara over primary election disagreements – G15 warns

The factional G15 group of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State on Tuesday warned that the party may lose the state if the current implosion triggered by the disagreement over the recent primaries is not resolved amicably.

The group in a statement in Ilorin on Tuesday said losing the G15 will be a grave  political mistake.

“Numbers don’t lie: Without the G15, APC cannot win Kwara,” the group declared.

The group urged President Tinubu and the National Working Committee, NWC, to intervene.

“It will be nothing short of political suicide for the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State to contemplate the exit of the G15 to the opposition.

“Such a development would inflict irredeemable damage and inevitably precipitate the party’s defeat at the polls.

“The G15 is not an ordinary caucus. It is a formidable constellation of tested, proven, and high-profile political leaders who have consistently delivered electoral victories across their respective domains.

“They are complemented by seasoned statesmen who have occupied strategic positions within the party and government.Let us examine the weight of this bloc,” it added.

The group declared that in Kwara Central, the APC stands to lose Ambassador Yahaya Seriki-Gambari, the Director General of the governorship campaign council in both 2019 and 2023.
