Why Jesse Lingard Will Wear Number 77 Shirt at Corinthians

Published

on

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Jesse Lingard has finally sealed his return to football, three months after terminating his contract at South Korean club FC Seoul. The 33-year-old has signed on the dotted line for Brazilian giants Corinthians.

Lingard had been linked with a number of clubs, including a return to England, where he most recently spent one season at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. However, he’s decided to continue plying his trade abroad, and will be the first Englishman to ever play in Brazil’s top-flight.

The Man Utd academy graduate finally left his boyhood club in 2022 after spending over two decades at Old Trafford. He enjoyed loan spells with clubs like Derby County and West Ham United, but will now embark on a completely new journey.

As the veteran midfielder embarks on a new adventure in South America, he’ll encounter one familiar face. Memphis Depay, the Netherlands international and ex-Man Utd star, who spent two years at Old Trafford. The centre-forward is now Corinthians’ talisman.

The seven-time Serie A champions currently sit fourth in the table and will have Lingard until the end of 2026. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the transfer on X (formerly Twitter) and confirmed the England international would be taking the number 77 shirt at his new club.

Lingard has most commonly been seen wearing either the number 11 or 14 during his career. However, there’s a special meaning behind the new digits he’ll be donning on his back in Brazil.

Per Globo, the number 77 is a tribute to the club’s 1977 state title, which brought a two-decade-long drought to an end. Other names to have worn the shirt at Corinthians include former Manchester City striker Jo, as well as Igor Coronado, Marcelinho Carioca, Chrystian Barletta and Jadson.

Lingard Becomes the Second ‘English’ Player in Corinthians History

While he’ll be the first England international to pull on the famous white shirt, Lingard won’t actually be the first footballer born in England to represent ‘Timao’.

In fact, Colin Kazim Richards, born in London, played for the Brazilian side in the 2017-18 season. Kazim-Richards was naturalised Turkish and represented the Turkiye national team during his career.

The former Manchester United starlet is set to become a free agent in January.

The veteran forward found the net twice for Turkiye, as well as netting a further double during his brief spell with Corinthians. Regardless, Lingard will be the first Three Lions star to feature in Brazil’s top division.

Lyrics & Story of Tartan Army Chant

Published

on

By

Scotland supporters have never been short of memorable football-related songs, as proved by their stirring rendition of Flower of Scotland before kick-off at the 2026 World Cup.

Whether it’s Flower of Scotland, or the countless terrace chants that follow the national team around Europe, the Tartan Army has built a songbook to match its reputation.

None of those songs has had a more unusual journey than Baccara’sYes Sir, I Can Boogie‘. Originally a disco hit from the 1970s with no obvious connection to Scottish football, the track has become one of the nation’s most recognisable modern anthems, thanks to an awkward video, a penalty shootout win, and a healthy sense of Scottish humour.

Story Behind ‘Boogie’ and Scotland

Scotland's John McGinn celebrates

For decades, the song was simply remembered as a catchy chart-topper from the late 1970s, with no ties to football whatsoever.

That changed because of a private joke that went public. In 2015, a video of then-Aberdeen defender Andy Considine dancing in drag to the song was recorded in a professional studio as part of his stag party. It stuck around as an embarrassing inside joke, until everything changed five years later when the video found its way online.

In November 2020, Scotland beat Serbia on penalties to qualify for Euro 2020 (took place in 2021), and end a 22-year wait for a major tournament. Considine, freshly called into the squad, was mobbed in the changing room by his teammates including Scott McTominay, Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney, who broke into the song as a tribute to his old video, with the celebration filmed and shared on social media.

Supporters soon followed suit. Whether in pubs or stadiums, ‘Boogie’ became the soundtrack to Scotland’s return to a major tournament.

Today, it is one of the first songs associated with the Tartan Army, despite having no Scottish origins whatsoever. Its popularity shows just how easily football culture can adopt an unlikely track and hand it an entirely new meaning, just like England did with the Oasis hit, Wonderwall.

The song was released in 1977 by Baccara, the Spanish duo of Mayte Mateos and Maria Mendiola. The disco track was a worldwide success and spent a week at the top of the UK singles charts. It remains one of the best-selling singles by a female duo to this day.

See the full lyrics to Yes Sir, I Can Boogie below:

Your eyes are full of hesitation,

If you know what your looking for,

Umm, baby I wan’t to keep my reputation,

You try me once you’ll beg for more,

Oooohh! Yes sir, I can boogie,

But I need a certain song,

I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long,

If you stay, you can’t go wrong,

I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long,

I don’t feel very much like talking,

You wanna know if I can dance,

Yes sir, already told you in the first verse and in the chorus,

But I will give you one more chance,Ooohh! Yes sir, I can boogie,

But I need a certain song,

I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long,

If you stay, you can’t go wrong,

I can boogie, boogie woogie all night long.

Yes Sir, I Can Boogie might be one of the most unlikely anthems in Scottish football, but it’s far from the only song associated with the national team.

Flower of Scotland remains the country’s official sporting anthem, performed before every international fixture. Loch Lomond and 500 Miles also regularly feature among supporters, sung at half-time or during celebrations to keep spirits up.

Scotland National Anthem: Flower of Scotland Lyrics, Video & Meaning Explained

Scotland will be back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, with the national anthem set to be sung loud and proud in North America.

Scotland have produced dedicated football songs too. Some of the most memorable are the tribute to their captain, John McGinn, simply titled, “We’ve got McGinn,” and “The Hand of God,” which mocks their English rivals after Diego Maradona’s handled goal in the 1986 World Cup.

From a stag party clip to the defining sound of the Tartan Army, Yes Sir, I Can Boogie has earned a strange, but well-loved place in Scotland’s songbook and history.

Alasdair Gold Names Tottenham’s Next Three Transfer Targets After Dubravka

Published

By

Tottenham Hotspur’s next three transfer targets have been named by Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold, after the club completed their fourth summer signing with the addition of Martin Dubravka.

Tottenham chiefs are on it, and they need to be after narrowly avoiding a disastrous relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season.

Spurs brought in Roberto De Zerbi on a long-term contract, and they know they need to seriously back him in the transfer market to improve an underperforming squad, if he is to lead them back up the Premier League standings.

Dubravka was the third player to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer this summer after Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, and with Jan Paul van Hecke also joining and Pedro Porro signing a new long-term deal, the north London outfit’s defence is shaping up nicely ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

De Zerbi wants more ambitious additions further forward to make a serious push next term, with at least two central midfielders and potentially up to three attackers wanted after the business they’ve already completed.

Midfield in particular appears to be the main priority in recent days, as Tottenham look to send out a statement to their top flight rivals.

The next part of Tottenham’s squad overhaul will be in midfield, with Gold confirming that talks are ongoing over a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The Football London journalist claims that any move for the Italian will set Spurs back around £100m, but the 26-year-old has emerged as the manager’s key target for the position.

Tottenham are also keen on a move to sign Mateus Fernandes from London neighbours West Ham United, although they face stiff competition from Manchester United in the race for the wantaway Portugal international.

Finally, the north Londoners are still interested in bringing Savinho to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having failed in their attempt to sign the Brazilian from Manchester City last summer.

Tottenham have made surprise contact with Chelsea over a deal to sign striker Liam Delap, as De Zerbi looks to add a new centre-forward to his squad ahead of next season.

It is said that a Stamford Bridge exit for the 23-year-old is now a possibility following a difficult debut season with the Blues following his move from Ipswich Town.

Delap only found the net twice across the 2025-26 campaign, although that hasn’t stopped Spurs making an enquiry over his availability.

Chelsea are said to be looking for £40m to sell the player they signed for £30m 12 months ago, but the fee is putting off potential suitors.

Tottenham currently have Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as their main centre-forward options heading into next season, although the latter has long been linked with a move away from Spurs and could finally leave this summer.

Spurs must also decide what they do with the highly-rated Will Lankshear, who impressed on loan at Oxford United last term.

Thomas Partey Could Be Blocked From Knockout Tie

Published

The 2026 World Cup could have yet more travel complications beyond the group stages as Ghana’s Thomas Partey faces being blocked from featuring in his country’s first knockout match, according to The Sun.

The Black Stars are almost guaranteed a place in the Round of 32 after picking up four points from their first two fixtures. A narrow victory against Panama and a goalless draw with England mean Ghana could finish either first, second or third in Group L.

Partey started in the England game, but he may not be allowed to feature for his team in the next round, depending on their final position. The 33-year-old is awaiting trial in the UK on rape and sexual assault charges. He has denied all allegations.

Thomas Partey’s World Cup Future in Doubt

Ghana's Thomas Partey

Should Ghana beat Croatia in their final group game and overcome England’s goal difference in the process, the Africans would top Group L. That’d set up a Round of 32 tie with one of the best third-placed teams from Groups E, H, I, J or K.

Partey would be able to play in that game as it’d take place in the United States, just like the England draw. It would be played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

However, there will be complications if they finish as runners-up in the group. The midfielder had to sit out of his nation’s first match against Panama after being denied a visa to enter Canada due to his ongoing case.

A second-placed finish would see Ghana play against either Portugal or Colombia at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario. It’s likely the ex-Arsenal man would again be blocked from entering the country.

Kansas City would be the venue hosting Ghana in the first knockout round if they end up finishing third. That would see Partey available to Carlos Queiroz for selection.

Ahead of his first appearance at this year’s World Cup, all attention was on whether every England player would shake Partey’s hand. Tottenham’s Djed Spence appeared to be the only Three Lions member to avoid the pre-match routine.

The English Football Association originally took time to consider whether they’d make the players’ decision for them before the match. But in the end, they left it up to each individual on whether they wanted to acknowledge their opponent or not.

Partey was asked about the incident in the mixed zone following the draw, but did not provide an answer.
