Lineker and Richards Disagree With Man Utd Legends on Permanent Carrick Hire

Published

on

Manchester United are now the overwhelming favourites to end the Premier League season in third position, but Gary Lineker and Micah Richards disagree with some United legends over Michael Carrick being named as the club’s permanent manager.

Man United have gone from being top-four hopefuls under Ruben Amorim to the lead candidates to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Red Devils suffered a setback as they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United earlier this month in the first defeat of the Carrick reign, having won six and drawn one of his opening seven matches in charge.

Carrick knew his team had to bounce back when they hosted fourth-placed Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, especially after Chelsea had been beaten by Newcastle on Saturday.

They did exactly that with a convincing 3-1 win against Unai Emery’s men, with United further boosted by Liverpool being held to a draw by Tottenham Hotspur later in the afternoon.

Even though Carrick has taken 22 points from a possible 27 available, it doesn’t appear to have convinced some United legends that he is the right man to be named as the club’s permanent manager for next season.

Paul Scholes appeared to aim criticism at Carrick for how the team was playing on Instagram following the loss to 10-man Newcastle, while Roy Keane believes that there are better options available to United in the summer.

While Gary Neville hasn’t ruled out Carrick being deserving of the job, he also believes that United must appoint the best manager available to them.

One United legend who does disagree with the others is Wayne Rooney, who believes he will earn the right to get the job if he secures Champions League qualification.

Richards and Lineker are on Rooney’s side, as they revealed on the latest episode of the Rest is Football podcast:

Richards said: “He needs a lot of credit, does Carrick, because that was a difficult job to take at that time. His reputation was on the line no matter what.

“We’ve seen ex-pros from Man United saying it’s not the right fit long term. I believe it is.”

Lineker replied:

“I don’t understand why they say that. You can’t say that until he has a good go at it. He’s doing it alright.

Richards added:

“In fairness, I think their opinion was hire the best, so they’ve tried that. I just think he was the best available right now. Feel-good factor, tactically, he’s been at the club before, he knows the players. So it’s almost like it’s perfect. He might not be the manager for Man United to go and win the league in future seasons, but for right now he’s a perfect fit. And I said that from day one.”

Who Else Could Man United Target?

According to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, three names have been placed on the shortlist of United senior officials ahead of the summer.

Two of those will manage at the 2026 World Cup in Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann and Portugal’s Roberto Martinez, while the third name is the out-of-work Roberto De Zerbi.

Recent reports suggest that United chiefs believe another potential target and World Cup manager in Mauricio Pochettino is more likely to be Tottenham Hotspur manager next season, although that could depend on their Premier League status.

Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are two more desirable World Cup managers who are set to stay in charge of England and Brazil respectively after the tournament.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique is another name mentioned in recent weeks, with Patrice Evra describing him as the club’s ‘dream’ appointment.

England’s 11 For 2026 World Cup Opener vs Croatia ‘Leaked’

England’s starting XI for their 2026 World Cup opener against Croatia has been leaked with the match just a few hours away.

The Three Lions, considered one of the favourites to win this summer’s competition in North America, will get their campaign underway on Wednesday evening when they take on Croatia at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The starting 11 that Thomas Tuchel will field for the match against Vatreni has now been leaked, with the German making some big calls.

According to talkSPORT, Jordan Pickford will be the man between the sticks. There’s no surprise there, with the Everton stopper widely expected to be England’s starting goalkeeper throughout the tournament.

The supremely talented Nico O’Reilly will start at left-back, while Chelsea captain Reece James will start on the opposite side.

Perhaps surprisingly, Marc Guehi will start the match on the bench, with John Stones and Ezri Konsa preferred in the centre of defence.

As expected, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson will start in the middle of midfield. There were huge question marks as to who would start as the number 10, but it is Jude Bellingham who has reportedly been given the nod over Morgan Rogers.

Anthony Gordon will start on the left wing, while, surprisingly, Noni Madueke will start instead of Bukayo Saka on the right of England’s three-man attack. Saka has been dealing with an Achilles issue in the last few months.

Harry Kane was always going to be in the lineup and he starts up front. The 32-year-old, who was sensational for Bayern Munich this season, will be integral to England’s hopes at this summer’s tournament.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Osasuna winger Víctor Munoz is in advanced talks to join Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United were reportedly one of the sides interested in signing Munoz, but his priority has always been game time. Newcastle have made a strong case that he will play regularly.

Newcastle are set to pay in the region of £35m, prioritising a move to sign a winger after Anthony Gordon was sold to Barcelona.

Munoz, described as ‘elite’, didn’t appear to be a huge priority for Manchester United, but it could have been a smart deal at a reasonable price.

Manchester United are clearly looking to prioritise midfielders in the summer transfer window.

Reports have suggested that they are seriously pushing to bring West Ham star Mateus Fernandes to the club, while they have also agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta.

United are believed to have pulled out of the race to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson.

It appears that Fernandes and Ederson could be the two targets for the midfield position, but there is still a chance they look to bring in a third before the window closes.

Man Utd Eyeing Move to Sign Morgan Rogers After Fernandes and Summerville

Manchester United are eyeing a move for a £100m star as they consider launching a £120m double transfer raid on West Ham United to sign Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, according to the Telegraph.

Man United have wrapped up their first signing of the summer already, with Ederson set to complete a move to Old Trafford next month after the Red Devils reached a full agreement to sign the Brazilian from Atalanta in a deal worth less than £40m.

United identified the central midfield position as their biggest transfer priority as they look to complete a major rebuild in that area following Casemiro’s departure, with Manuel Ugarte likely to join him through the exit door.

One more player will arrive in the position after Ederson, and it could even be two should Ugarte complete a move away, with full focus right now on signing Fernandes.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United are in official talks with both the player and West Ham over a switch to Old Trafford, with the Portugal international keen on the move.

The Red Devils are also considering a move for the Netherlands international Summerville, which could see them launch a £120m bid for the Hammers duo.

Man United ‘Strongly Interested’ in Morgan Rogers

While United have interest in a potential double swoop on West Ham, they are also targeting a player from another English club in Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa.

The Red Devils had been linked with the England international earlier in the summer, but recent reports have suggested that Arsenal are the frontrunners for his signature and that the player is keen to join the Premier League champions.

However, a new report from the Telegraph says that United have ‘strong interest’ in signing Rogers as they look to strengthen their attacking options.

Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox have both worked with the 23-year-old ‘superstar’ in the past at Middlesbrough and Manchester City respectively, so the interest in him isn’t a shock.

Rogers’ £100m price tag is a big issue though, with United earmarking the majority of their summer transfer budget to bolster their midfield.

Man United Winger Move Depends on Rashford

The report adds that any move for a winger, or a forward who can play out wide and centrally like Rogers, will depend on the future of Marcus Rashford.

The England international is available for £40m this summer due to a release clause, after Barcelona failed to activate their buy option on the forward.

The release clause is valid for everyone except Manchester City and Liverpool, with the Red Devils only willing to entertain permanent exits for the 28-year-old following his loan switch to Barcelona.

United need to offload the £325,000-a-week player if they are to be able to bring in a new forward, with Rashford keen on another move abroad following his successful spell at the Camp Nou.

Several Premier League clubs are thought to be monitoring his situation.
