50 Highest-Paid Athletes of All Time
The world of professional sport is a truly life-changing experience, especially for those at the top end of their selected fields. Money makes the world go round, with the biggest names and best athletes reaching generational levels of wealth.
From eye-watering salaries to mega-money endorsement deals, the most recognisable athletes in history have been set up for life. Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, Lewis Hamilton, and many more experts in the sporting world have been listed among the highest-paid sportspeople of all time.
Sportico released a study that takes into account the total earnings of the highest-paid athletes, with inflation taken into account based on the year the person in question turned professional. For example, Mike Tyson turned pro in 1986, while Floyd Mayweather didn’t break onto the scene until 1995. The levels of money in boxing will have changed significantly over the years after Tyson’s career came to an end.
50 – 41
Just making it into the top 50 are basketball stars Giannis Antetokounmpo, Chris Paul and Kevin Garnett, among others. Legendary boxer Evander Holyfield also features in the number 42 spot, having raked in $675 million in inflation-adjusted earnings.

Tennis is well represented in the top 50, with Novak Djokovic featuring in the top 40, having earned comfortably over $500 million. The Serbian is still playing and could make much more in competition prize money, despite not winning a title since 2023, still has eye-watering sponsorship deals away from the sport.

Another of tennis’ biggest-ever stars, Rafael Nadal, is the second top earner in the sport’s history according to this list. The Spaniard, who won the majority of his tournaments on clay, has earned more than Djokovic, even without the inflation-adjusted numbers.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are two huge stars in America and have been well compensated for their time in football. The former is agonisingly close to being in the top 20, being the closest member of the list so far to reach one billion dollars.

Shaquille O’Neal ($1.32 billion), Kobe Bryant ($1.13 billion), Kevin Durant ($1.18 billion), and Steph Curry ($1.06 billion) all ensure basketball is one of the most well-represented sports on this list. Football star Neymar is perhaps a surprise inclusion, but the Brazilian is essentially the modern-day Pele, with the levels of money in football reaching eye-watering heights.
British superstar Lewis Hamilton features among the exclusive list, with the Formula 1 legend’s earnings eclipsing the $1 billion mark. Iron Mike Tyson was one of the biggest names in the sporting world during his prime, but the boxer’s earnings see him just scrape the top 20.

$1.57 billion
Someone with the moniker Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather could never be a shock inclusion on a rich list. The undefeated boxer has never shied away from his lavish lifestyle away from the ring, with his profession funding expensive cars, clothing, and mansions dotted around the United States of America.
Eye-Watering Amount of Money Floyd Mayweather & Manny Pacquiao Will Earn From Rematch Revealed
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are lacing up the gloves again this year on Netflix, and they’re going to earn millions!
Winning all 50 of his professional bouts, Mayweather has even dipped his toe into influencer boxing in recent years, with his most high-profile fight coming against YouTuber Logan Paul. Having retired from the sport in 2017, the 48-year-old has several endorsement deals and the lucrative payments he received throughout his career to live off for the rest of his life.
9
Roger Federer
$1.67 billion
Roger Federer is viewed as one of the biggest gentlemen in sporting history. The Swiss superstar is not only softly spoken and respectful of his opponents, but he is also one of the most successful men to ever take to the court.
During his prime years, Federer won Wimbledon – the biggest event of the tennis calendar year – six times in seven years between 2003 and 2009. Now 43 years old, he has become one of the most loved sportspeople on the planet, and is among the top three highest-earning tennis players in history, having raked in over $130 million.
8
David Beckham
$1.68 billion
David Beckham is one of the most famous footballers of all time. The Englishman’s notoriety has only elevated ever since hanging up his boots after a long and fruitful career with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.
Through sponsorships with mega-named brands such as Adidas, PepsiCo, and the Qatari Government, Beckham’s net worth has hit truly staggering heights. His earnings as a football player pale in comparison to the cash he’s raked in through his various business ventures, which include his part-ownership of American football club Inter Miami.
7
Jack Nicklaus
$1.83 billion
Golf is well represented in the top 10, with three of the sport’s greatest of all time making an appearance on the list. First up is Jack Nicklaus, who turned professional all the way back in the 1960s. Therefore, his inflation-adjusted earnings of close to $2 billion are significantly higher than the sum he actually raked in ($930 million).
Only two golfers have won more tours than Ohio-born Nicklaus managed during his time in the sport (73). Not only has he made a lot of money out of golf, but the 85-year-old has given back to the sport majorly by designing over 400 courses across the globe.
6
Arnold Palmer
$1.85 billion
Another of golf’s greatest-ever stars, Arnold Palmer, won 62 PGA titles across his career, including four Masters titles. He was part of the ‘Big Three’ alongside Nicklaus and Gary Player as he rose to prominence in the 1960s.
20 Greatest American Golfers in History [Ranked]
America has blessed us with some of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, including the likes of Tiger Woods & Jack Nicklaus.
The Arnold Palmer, an iced tea drink, has long been embedded in American culture since it was founded by the legendary golfer. Sadly passing away in 2016, Palmer has won the fifth-most PGA Tours of all time (62), putting him among the most successful in the sport.
5
Lionel Messi
$1.99 billion
Lionel Messi is the second-highest football player on this list, with his earnings even exceeding those of the man who was instrumental in bringing him to Inter Miami, David Beckham. Having spent the majority of his career playing for European giants Barcelona and winning almost every prize on offer multiple times over, it’s no surprise the Argentine has raked in a smidge under $2 billion.
At 38 years old, Messi is still the second-highest-paid player on the planet, as he reportedly makes over £100 million each year at the MLS club. That’s before even starting to take into account his sponsorship deals with major worldwide brands such as Apple and Adidas.
4
LeBron James
$2.03 billion
LeBron James became the first active basketball player to become a billionaire. Behind one other extremely famous figure in the sport’s history – who we will get to – James is perhaps the biggest star to emerge from the court.
Huge brands such as PepsiCo and Nike have added to his earnings in basketball, which are thought to be around $900 million. Along his journey, James has also taken a keen interest in business ventures and holds a stake in other huge brands such as Beats by Dre.
3
Cristiano Ronaldo
$2.52 billion
Beating long-term rival Messi to the crown of being the highest-paid footballer to ever live, Cristiano Ronaldo is also the top-earning player to this day. His lucrative time in Saudi Arabia, making more than £200 million every year, the 40-year-old doesn’t look like he’ll be hanging up his boots anytime soon either.
The Portuguese superstar is one of the most recognisable and famous people on the planet, with his brand transcending the sport he plays. Ronaldo is the highest-earning fully active sportsman according to Sportico, having made over $2 billion during his career.
2
Tiger Woods
$2.88 billion
Sitting at the top of the tree in terms of golf, and second overall, is Tiger Woods. The most famous person the sport has ever produced, the American has a significant gap between himself and the chasing pack. It’s not hard to understand either, as Woods is the most successful man in his world.
He and Sam Snead have the joint-most ATP Tour wins, with a staggering 82. The 49-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful and lucrative career as the face of golf for the majority of his active playing days. Woods is said to have made a record $121 million in prize money from his PGA Tour triumphs. His earnings are set to increase further with business ventures alongside other famous faces, such as Rory McIlroy and Justin Timberlake, going strong.
1
Michael Jordan
$4.5 billion
In terms of the highest-paid athlete of all time, it’s not even close. With almost $2 billion more in projected earnings compared to Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan tops the list with a staggering $4.15 billion in wealth.
50 Greatest Athletes Of All Time (Ranked)
Some debates have been settled here, including Ronaldo vs Messi.
Even before the inflation-adjusted earnings, Jordan – the face of basketball – was already well ahead with his earnings at $3 billion. He’s been retired since 2003, and still can’t be touched in these standings, with the brand exceeding what the American did on a court. His Air Jordan shoes are worn around the globe, and it is thought he has made $1.5 billion from his partnership with Nike.

Fox Sports to Make Millions From World Cup Hydration Break Ads
The opening week of the 2026 World Cup has been notable for the controversy created by the hydration breaks taken in the middle of matches. Every single one of the 104 games at the tournament will feature a hydration break after 22 minutes of each half.
Per FIFA regulations, these breaks must last three minutes each. The reasoning behind these breaks relates to the searing temperatures that are typically present in many venues across host countries, the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, the breaks are mandatory and not based on any temperature readings inside stadiums. The first complaints regarding the breaks came in the opening game of the tournament, where fans were outraged that US broadcaster Fox cut to commercials during the hydration breaks in Mexico’s 2-0 victory against South Africa.
Critics claimed that the practice had broken FIFA rules about advertising being shown during matches. However, it is easy to see why Fox took the decision to air commercials after details emerged of the staggering sums they are earning for them during each match.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk went viral on Sunday evening after making his feelings known on the enforced breaks during matches following the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Japan.
Van Dijk admitted that the hydration breaks were something he “didn’t really like”, arguing that their presence should be determined on a match-by-match basis:
“I think every time we go to commercials, it’s not really something that I like. I think for the neutral viewers on TV it is also not great. So if it is really hot, it would be good to put them in, but I think you have to look at every game separately, in my opinion. But I think I have said enough already on that.”
While Van Dijk was careful not to completely savage the practice for fear of angering officials, his former manager, Jurgen Klopp held absolutely nothing back with his opinion on the breaks.
In a damning rant, the 58-year-old accused executives of “holding football hostage”, branding the cooling breaks as “a gilded cage built for sponsors.”
How Much Fox is Set to Earn From World Cup Hydration Breaks
To date, Fox has run full-screen advertisements during every hydration break stoppage throughout the World Cup. The broadcaster is aware of the criticism, but, per a source for the Sports Business Journal, they have vowed to “continue to go full screen”, although a tweak to a picture-in-picture approach “may still happen” before the end of the tournament.
Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal confirmed that Fox was making a minimum of $200,000 for a 30-second commercial during the group stages. This rises considerably for games involving the USA, where that figure rises to $750,000.
Fox is likely to increase those prices as the tournament progresses. As a result, estimates suggest the broadcaster could make a massive $332.8 million if they can sell each of the eight, 30-second commercial slots for every game.
FIFA have confirmed that Fox will face no disciplinary action for airing the commercials, so long as they are strictly restricted to hydration breaks.

Arsenal Could Now Hijack Liverpool For Yan Diomande Deal
Arsenal could hijack Liverpool’s move for Yan Diomande this summer, as Sky Sports claims that the Gunners are showing interest in the Ivory Coast international.
It comes as the Gunners are tracking several wingers in the transfer market in the hopes of improving their forward ranks going into next season.
The left wing has emerged as requiring the most immediate attention, as Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard continue to be linked with a potential exit in the coming weeks.
PSG’s Bradley Barcola has become a key target for Arsenal this summer, though there is uncertainty over whether the European champions will be willing to sell the Frenchman, even with his deal dwindling towards the final few years.
With that in mind, focus could soon switch to Diomande, who has already taken the World Cup by storm.
Arsenal Eye Yan Diomande Move
As per the report from Sky Sports, Diomande is a player on Arsenal’s radar this summer as a potential option for the flanks, after an impressive campaign for RB Leipzig.
The 19-year-old has burst onto the scene in the Bundesliga, just one year on after he made the switch from Spanish side Leganes in the 2025 summer transfer window.
Any deal could be tough, given that Leipzig have placed a £130 million price tag on Diomande, according to reports, as plenty of top clubs show interest in a potential deal.
Liverpool appear most advanced in getting a deal done, with talks held and an offer being prepared to get personal terms over the line in the coming weeks.
If Arsenal are to swoop in and get a deal done, that would be quite the hijack to land one of the most in-demand players on the market this summer.
There may be some risk involved in landing the youngster, who has such a small sample size in senior football, but it’s one that the Gunners could take.

Diomande Is Perfect For Arsenal
Given how recently he broke through as a superstar, there is naturally an element of risk surrounding Diomande, and a potentially inflated transfer price to go with it.
However, that can be justified by the talent he has already displayed, and the potential he has to take himself to a whole other level in the near future.
Typically, Bundesliga attackers haven’t translated well to the Premier League, Erling Haaland aside. But the World Cup is showing that the 19-year-old can compete with the very best.
Diomande managed to rinse Arsenal star Piero Hincapie on a few occasions in Ivory Coast’s win over Ecuador, showing the ability he has to wreak havoc on the opposition defenders.
Arsenal Eyeing Surprise Deal to Sign Tottenham Defender, Set to Move This Month
It could be considered a controversial move.
His pace and trickery bring something that the Gunners could do with on the left, while he has the versatility to feature on the right should they wish to use him there too.
It would certainly be a risk, but one that Arsenal should be willing to take while they are working from a position of strength, while also impacting their rivals’ transfer business.

Man Utd Want Felix Nmecha
Manchester United are still on the lookout for midfielders in the summer transfer window, as Sky Sports Germany reports of a fresh option in the market for the Red Devils.
The central ranks remain an important area of change for Michael Carrick, with a clear need to add some more quality when in possession.
An exit for Casemiro should be followed by a move for Manuel Ugarte, showing a clear change in approach, with some replacements already on the cards.
A deal has been agreed for Ederson from Atalanta, but the second signing behind him in midfield is currently unclear, as links continue to arise over several different candidates.
The likes of Sandro Tonali, Alex Scott, Mateus Fernandes, Carlos Baleba, and more have all been rumoured with interest from Man United, as they cast a wide net to land the ideal addition for the future.
A fresh name has now joined the race for the Red Devils, but there is competition for his signature.
Man United Want Felix Nmecha
According to a report from Sky Sports Germany, Man United are in the mix to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha this summer.
The 25-year-old has impressed since joining the Bundesliga outfit back in 2023, becoming a regular feature in the centre of the pitch across all competitions.
That has caught the eye of Man United, as well as a few of their rivals, as Manchester City and Real Madrid are also claimed to be in the race for his signature.
Any move this summer looks difficult, however, as Borussia Dortmund are intent on keeping the German international for at least another season of action.
His club hold a contract until 2030, and while he does have a release clause in the region of £60.5 million, that doesn’t become active until next summer at the earliest.
Any deal this summer is likely to eclipse that, due to Dortmund’s stance, but it would make for an ideal move to land a player who can make an impact in the here and now.

How Good Is Felix Nmecha?
Nmecha is a target for several clubs for good reason, following a few consistent years of standout performances in the Bundesliga.
The 25-year-old came through the Manchester City academy, but made just three senior appearances before making a move to Wolfsburg.
It only took two seasons of consistent football in the Bundesliga for him to catch the eye, as Borussia Dortmund took their chance to try and develop their next big talent.
Six Years Later, Man Utd Finally Plot Move to Sign ‘Intelligent’ Star in Bargain Deal
Sander Berge was wrongly rumoured to be a United transfer target in 2020
Nmecha has been described as the perfect replacement for Rodri at Man City, prompting talks of a potential return as the club looks to build for the long-term future without the Ballon d’Or winner.
With that clear ability in his locker, and the potential to grow even further as he nears the peak years of his career, there is some hope that Man United could pounce on the mistake of their nearest and dearest rivals.
