15 Greatest Man City Players Of All Time (Ranked)

Published

on

Manchester City, one of the most successful clubs in English football – and one of the few sides to have won the treble, achieving the feat under Pep Guardiola in the 2022/23 campaign – have seen some truly remarkable players grace their ranks throughout an illustrious history, particularly in the club’s current era under Sheikh Mansour’s ownership.

But that’s not to say the club hadn’t enjoyed success before. While the period from 2008 onwards brought a meteoric rise thanks to a financial boom at the Etihad Stadium, the Cityzens had already secured two First Division titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, and a European Cup Winners’ Cup prior to the takeover. As a result, some incredible figures from the past are still spoken about today and fully deserve their place among the greats.

Below is a ranking of the 10 greatest Man City players of all time, taking into account their contributions, ability, and impact on the team’s success.

Paul Scholes, Kevin De Bruyne and Frank Lampard

10 Greatest Attacking Midfielders in Premier League History

This article ranks and analyses the 10 greatest attacking midfielders in Premier League history, featuring iconic players from across the decades.

10

Mike Summerbee

1965-1975

Mike Summerbee

Playing on the right wing, Mike Summerbee was one of the most influential players in the Manchester City side which won four trophies in three seasons from 1968 to 1970. Something of a practical joker, Summerbee (or “Buzzer” as teammates nicknamed him) was also known for a fiery temperament, which endeared him to teammates and fans.

In his first season (1965/66), he was the only City player to start every match, helping gain promotion, and he maintained a consistent, high-energy presence for a decade. Nowadays,at 83 years old, he remains a club ambassador.

9

Francis Lee

1967-1974

Former Manchester City player Francis Lee

Francis Lee, known for his goal-scoring prowess and flamboyant playing style, deserves a place on the list of the greatest Man City players. He was considered the “missing piece” to their successful late-1960s side, scoring 148 goals in 330 appearances and leading them to major silverware.

He played a vital role in City’s First Division title win in 1968 and helped the team reach the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. His impact as a forward and his eye for goal make him a true legend of the club, and he formed one-third of one of the club’s best attacking trio alongside the aforementioned Mike Summerbee and someone else (more on him later…).

8

Bert Trautmann

1949-1964

Bert Trautmann’s remarkable story and achievements earn him a place among the greatest Man City players. The German goalkeeper joined City shortly after serving in the Luftwaffe during World War II, where he earnt five medals before becoming a prisoner of war in Britain.

Named FWA Footballer of the Year for 1956, Trautmann entered football folklore with his performance in the 1956 FA Cup final. With 17 minutes of the match remaining, Trautmann suffered a serious injury while diving at the feet of Birmingham City’s Peter Murphy. Despite his injury, he continued to play, making crucial saves to preserve his team’s 3-1 lead. His neck was noticeably crooked as he collected his winner’s medal; three days later, an X-ray revealed it to be broken.

7

Bernardo Silva

2017-present

Bernardo Silva

He may not make headlines in the same way the likes of Erling Haaland does, but Bernardo Silva has been one of Guardiola’s most reliable assets ever since his £43.5 million switch from Monaco in 2017. A shrewd operator in midfield, who has repeatedly won over his own fans over the years for the fieriness he’s shown his opponents (particularly Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool), he worked his way up to captaincy in the 2025/26 season.

It’s his leadership and reliability that has been an important cog in a side that won six Premier League titles and a Champions League. Current rumours suggest he might be leaving the club once his contract expires at the end of the season, but after winnign everything under the sun, he can do so on a dizzying high.

6

Yaya Toure

2010-2018

Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure

One of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, Yaya Toure was a force of nature in midfield. The Ivorian combined strength and stamina with remarkable technical skills and a keen eye for goal. His driving runs from midfield were a trademark feature of City’s attacking play, often leading to crucial goals, such as those in the 2014 title run-in.

His towering performances during the 2013/14 season, where he scored an impressive 20 league goals, underline his immense contribution to the club, and it was he, above most others, who helped really the Cityzens awake from their slumber.

5

Vincent Kompany

2008-2019

Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany, the Belgian defensive stalwart, embodied leadership and commitment during his time at Man City. Now Bayern Munich’s chief, his commanding presence at the back, combined with his ability to score crucial goals, made him an inspirational figure for both his teammates and the supporters.

The highlight of his captaincy came in the 2018-2019 season, during one of his final games for the club, when he scored a remarkable long-range goal against Leicester City, ensuring that City finished above Liverpool and won the Premier League.

4

David Silva

2010-2020

David Silva’s elegance and creativity made him a fan favorite and a key component of Man City’s rise to dominance. The Spanish playmaker possessed exceptional technical ability and an eye for the perfect pass – a perfect encapsulation of the tiki-taka subtlety is nation was known for at the time.

Silva was an instrumental figure in four of City’s Premier League triumphs and helped establish the team’s possession-based style of play.

His influence on the pitch and ability to unlock defences with his sublime skills make him one of City’s all-time greats, though he would no doubt rank ever-so slightly higher if he had been around in more recent years, when the club went from having a chokehold on English football to complete superiority.

3

Kevin De Bruyne

2015-2025

Kevin De Bruyne of Man City celebrates a goal vs Arsenal

Kevin De Bruyne established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the world and a true talisman for Man City. Arriving at the club in 2015 with a lot to prove after Chelsea let him go to Wolfsburg all too easily, the Belgian maestro was instrumental in City’s domestic and European successes. De Bruyne’s exceptional vision, passing range, and ability to dictate the tempo of the game make him a formidable force in midfield.

He was a defining factor in City’s multiple Premier League titles and their lone Champions League triumph. De Bruyne’s impact on the team and his consistently high level of performance make him deserving of a place among the greatest Man City players of all time, and as the dust continues to settle on his departure, debates around whether he was better than Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard continue to be had.

2

Sergio Aguero

2011-2021

Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero’s impact on Manchester City cannot be overstated. The Argentine striker became an icon of the club during his ten-year tenure, scoring an astonishing 260 goals in 390 appearances to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The former Atletico Madrid boy wonder’s incredible goalscoring ability and knack for delivering in important moments were pivotal in City’s success, including their first Premier League title in 2012, famously secured in stoppage time against Queens Park Rangers. He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest strikers to not only play for Man City, but to have ever graced English football.

Colin Bell, known as “The King of the Kippax,” is widely regarded as the greatest player in Man City’s history. His skill, vision, and exceptional passing ability made him an integral part of the team’s successes during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Bell played a crucial role in helping City win numerous domestic honors, including the First Division title in 1968 and the FA Cup in 1969. He was not only a gifted midfielder but also a true leader on and off the pitch. As a central figure between 1966 and 1979, his ability to dominate games, create chances, and score 153 goals in 501 appearances made him a “complete” player who drove City to multiple major trophies during a time when the club wasn’t blessed with wealthy owners.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane Slam the US For Banning World Cup Referee

Published

Gary Neville and Roy Keane have joined fellow ITV pundit Ian Wright in condemning the decision not to allow referee Omar Artan into the USA for the 2026 World Cup.

Artan, known as the ‘best referee in Africa’, was interrogated upon his arrival in the States before being turned away. The White House claimed they believed the official had ties to a terrorist group, which is why they didn’t allow him to enter the country.

However, the US and FIFA have received strong backlash for the decision, including from Wright on social media. Football’s governing body released a statement, confirming they would not get involved with the issue, and Artan would indeed be absent from the competition.

Gary Neville Slams ‘Ridiculous’ Visa Debacle

gary neville

Speaking on ITV’s coverage of the opening game between Mexico and South Africa, Neville was asked about the ongoing controversy that had preceded the tournament’s kick-off. Not only with Artan, but also the situation involving Iran.

“We have seen it in Russia, we have seen it in Qatar and now we are seeing it in America, which has got the visa issues, obviously, for the referee,” the retired England footballer said.

Neville then continued, saying that ‘common sense has prevailed’ regarding Iran being allowed to play their matches in the US, even if they must train in Mexico, but was baffled FIFA didn’t insist on their referees all being allowed in the country. He ranted:

“Fans are obviously having issues getting into the country, the Iranian team it looks like common sense has mainly prevailed with them and they are now able to travel – even though they are not in this country but they are in Mexico.

“We have to get referees in that are obviously FIFA officials, I don’t know why FIFA haven’t been stronger on that issue.”

“To me it is ridiculous the fact the referee is not able to come into this country. He is a FIFA referee, he is basically someone who has been lauded as being one of the very best.”

FIFA Told to Pay World Cup Referee ‘Life-Changing Sum of Money’ After US Ban

FIFA have been told to cough-up for the officials troubles.

The ex-Manchester United defender believes the host nations should allow their countries to be ‘given over’ to visitors for the World Cup. He added:

“You have got that statue over your shoulder, the Statue of Liberty. I don’t think he’ll be feeling that right now. He is being celebrated like a hero in his own country and rightly so.

“When you host a World Cup, you are effectively giving over your land to the world of football for four to five to six weeks. We need tolerance and people who can accept that everybody comes from a different part of the world and that’s not happened here.”

Roy Keane Agrees With Colleagues on World Cup Issues

Following Neville’s full comments on the issue, Wright once again reiterated that he’s firmly against what has been happening off the pitch. Keane was the last one to give his view, but he agreed with his colleagues.

The Irishman said: “We shouldn’t shy away from the problems that are facing officials, supporters and teams. Once the game gets underway today and the ceremony starts, hopefully it will all be positive from there onwards.”

Keane is hoping for attention to now turn to matters on the pitch, just as many watching from home or the stands will be too.

Liverpool Want to Sign Another ‘Spectacular’ France International After Barcola

Published

Liverpool are set to battle it out with their rivals Manchester United for the signature of an impressive midfielder this summer, according to reports from TuttoJuve.

The Reds could be set for some changes in the middle of the park, with Curtis Jones expected to leave as he enters the final year of his deal, while Alexis Mac Allister is also linked with an exit.

Attention then turns towards incoming players and possible replacements, as Adam Wharton and Alex Scott have been linked with a potential move to Anfield.

However, there is a fresh option on the cards for Liverpool, with a French international now on the club’s radar for the summer.

Liverpool Want Khephren Thuram

Khephren Thuram

Reports from Italian outlet TuttoJuve claim that Liverpool are eyeing a move for Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram this summer, who could be on the market.

The Merseyside outfit could be set to battle it out with their rivals Manchester United, though, as they are also listed as a team with interest in the 25-year-old.

Thuram has been a regular for Juventus ever since he made the move from OGC Nice in 2024, making just shy of 100 appearances for the Bianconeri in that time.

His availability on the market for a bargain, relative to others being touted with a move to the Premier League, could make the midfielder an attractive option.

Juventus are yet to set a price tag for a possible exit, but discussions in the €45-50 million (£38.8-43.1 million) range could tempt a move for the star.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool could jump at that offer, which may make Thuram the second French international on the radar this summer, while the Reds continue to pursue a move for Bradley Barcola.

Thuram Would Add Quality

Khephren Thuram

If Liverpool were to make a move for Thuram, then it would add some serious quality into the midfield that may be needed heading into next season.

It’s clear that the Reds need extra energy in the middle, and with the potential exits of Jones and Mac Allister, both quality and depth will be required.

Thuram has been described as “spectacular” since joining Juventus, largely playing in a deep-lying role in the midfield ranks for the Serie A club.

Personal Terms Agreed: £55m Star Ready to Join Liverpool if FSG Sanction Deal

Liverpool have already agreed personal terms for a potential return this summer, if a buy-back clause is activated.

At six-foot-four-inches tall, he has the build of someone ready to compete in the Premier League, along with the age profile that would see him spend his peak years in the division.

Throw a reasonable transfer fee into the mix, and it appears to be a deal that would clearly suit Liverpool in the current market conditions.

Man Utd Still Want To Sign £75m Brighton Star

Published

Manchester United still have plenty of alternatives to pivot to in their search for a new defensive midfielder this summer. Michael Carrick is hoping to build on the success he managed at Old Trafford during his interim spell now that he is the permanent boss, but he knows the level of his squad needs to improve.

While the Red Devils wound up cruising to a third-place finish, fresh talent is going to have to be added if they have any hope of catching Arsenal and Manchester City, who look to be in a league of their own as far as the Premier League goes.

One area United have little choice but to add to this summer is the defensive midfield, with Casemiro having packed his bags and departed Old Trafford. But it is an extremely costly area to invest in, and deals are not easy to reach. Fortunately for United, it looks as though they have options.

Man Utd might struggle to land Anderson

Elliot Anderson points the way for Nottingham Forest

United have been heavily linked with Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson this summer, with the midfielder clearly on track for a big move following a superb campaign. But a number of clubs are said to be interested, and according to GIVEMESPORT’s senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs, that could see the Red Devils go elsewhere, with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, a more offensive Alex Scott and Brighton’s holding midfielder Carlos Baleba also being considered.

Jacobs posted on X: “Manchester United view Elliot Anderson as a dream target, but they won’t get sucked into a bidding war, especially without player buy-in first. Cost of deal, plus a feeling Anderson favours #MCFC mean Manchester United are advancing on other targets as of now. Mateus Fernandes remains one to watch with talks underway on player side. Bournemouth will speak to Alex Scott further on his future soon and value him at around £80m. Carlos Baleba on Manchester United’s list as well.”

Baleba remains an option for Manchester United

baleba brighton

Baleba, likely to cost at least £70million this summer, is just the latest smart Brighton signing to have gone from strength-to-strength at the Amex Stadium. The Cameroon international has proven a worthy successor to Moises Caicedo, and he played a pivotal role in helping the Seagulls to European qualification, playing in 31 of the 38 Premier League games.

The midfielder, described as a ‘monster’, is still only 22 years of age, and he has already been described as a ‘great player’ by Brighton boss Fabian Hurzuler, who said back in 2024: “I think he’s a great player, he’s developing and improving fast and he’s adapting to the ideas very quickly. He understands it and as I have always said he has so much potential. When we go into detail there’s so many things where you can improve, and our job is to help him and to give him this environment.”

A combative midfielder with plenty of potential is what United are after this summer, and they would clearly prefer a player with Premier League experience – a style of recruitment that has led them well in the last year.

But Brighton are notoriously difficult to do business with, and their qualification for Europe will not help. A reported asking price of between £80million and £100million has been floated, although there are going to be very few viable options for less than £80million this summer.
