What Sir Alex Ferguson Told David Beckham After Halfway Line Goal v Wimbledon
When discussing the greatest goals of the Premier League era, David Beckham’s stunning strike from the halfway line against Wimbledon in August 1996 stands out as one of the very best. This unforgettable moment is undoubtedly among the most famous strikes in English top flight history – if not the most famous.
On the opening day of the 1996-97 season, Beckham showcased his remarkable vision and skill. He received the ball deep in his own half, quickly assessed the situation, and noticed Neil Sullivan off his line. Seizing the opportunity, the future England captain produced a moment of technical brilliance as he flighted the ball over the goalkeeper, who could only stand and admire.
Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler encapsulated the moment perfectly, declaring, “Take a bow, David Beckham.” His commentary has become part of Premier League folklore, adding to the magic of that day. Beckham’s goal not only highlighted his immense talent, but also shot him into a new level of fame. This was something that Sir Alex Ferguson was desperate to protect him from, as the winger himself revealed.
David Beckham’s Response After Ferguson Named Four World-Class Man Utd Players
David Beckham had the perfect response when Sir Alex Ferguson said he only managed four world-class players at Man Utd.
What Ferguson Said to Beckham After His Goal vs Wimbledon
Per The Athletic, the former Manchester United star revealed exactly what was said by his manager and other members of the United squad after his incredible strike. Beckham recalled: “One of my heroes was Eric Cantona. He didn’t say much, Eric. But he came up to me after the game. ‘David… what a goal.’ That was almost as good as actually scoring it. He added:
“I went up to the boss. I thought he was going to say, ‘Great goal’ and put his arms around me. He said, ‘Straight on the bus — and don’t talk to anyone.’
“But that was his way of protecting me. He didn’t want me speaking to any media because he knew what that goal was going to do.”
While Ferguson ultimately could do nothing to stop the celebrity that his academy graduate would become, he did his utmost to delay the inevitable following Beckham’s mind-blowing strike by ensuring that the wide midfielder did not face the media after the full-time whistle.
Manchester United’s 30 Greatest Players Ever (Ranked)
Manchester United’s 30 greatest players ever have been ranked, featuring Sir Bobby Charlton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, George Best & Roy Keane.
While he didn’t give the player much credit to his face, Ferguson made sure to praise the goal publicly when he was asked by Martin Tyler about it days later. “Excellent. Absolutely superb,” the Scotsman commented. “First day of the season and you have to say it’ll be Goal of the Season. It will have to be something wonderful to beat that because I’ve never seen it done before. What a marvellous strike of the ball, dear me.”
Tyler also asked Ferguson about the potential a then 21-year-old Beckham had, to which the Premier League’s greatest ever manager gave a candid response:
“He’s started the season very, very well. Of course he’s got stronger. I’ve always said that about the boy. He’s going to take time and I’m not going to rush him. He will be rested many games this season.
“I want him to be playing for Manchester United until he’s 27/28. We’ll nurse him along but obviously he’s had a great start to the season for us.”
‘I Played with Ronaldo, Zidane, & Keane – One Star is More Dedicated to Football’
“He’ll be the first in the gym and he’ll be the last out of the gym.”
Beckham’s Relationship With Ferguson Through the Years
Beckham always regarded his first manager as a father figure during his early development as a footballer. Ferguson’s protective nature extended beyond just the aftermath of the famous Wimbledon goal. He also reassured his number seven that he would look after him following the public backlash to the winger’s red card at the 1998 World Cup.
However, as the rising star’s fame outside of football continued to grow, tensions began to mount. While several incidents occurred behind closed doors, the most public spat came when Ferguson allegedly kicked a boot at Beckham while criticising him for a mistake during an FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.
The winger made sure the cut was on full display as the media caught wind of the dressing room incident. It became clear that both parties agreed it was best for the player to leave the club, resulting in his move to Real Madrid that very summer. In the years since, the two have reconciled, with Beckham admitting that some of the decisions he made in the past were wrong.

Mo Salah ‘Very Keen’ to Join Fenerbahce as Talks Held
Mohamed Salah could make a shock move to an unlikely European club this summer following his departure from Liverpool.
The Egyptian became a free agent this summer after his incredible nine-year spell at the Reds came to an end. During his time at Liverpool, he scored 257 times in 442 matches and helped the club to nine trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League.
Despite now being 33 years old, Salah is still capable of playing at a very high level and will have no shortage of suitors.
There has been speculation that a move to the Saudi Pro League is on the cards, but now a move to a European club is being touted.
Salah Holds Positive Talks With European Club
It now appears Salah, still considered one of the best wingers in world football, is closing in on a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce after allegedly holding positive talks with the European giants.
During the presidential election at Fenerbahce, candidate Aziz Yildrim told reporters that he would try to sign Salah. He said, per Football365:
“He would ask for a three-year contract, and the total cost would be 90 million Euros (£77m). If he is our urgent need, we will sign him! Our football committee will decide on these matters.”
Yildrim went on to win the presidential election at Fenerbahce. Ertan Torunogullari, who was a board member at the Turkish club’ before departing last week, has now claimed that the club had held positive talks with Salah.
“He was very keen on coming to Turkiye. The meetings we had were extremely positive,” he told Fotospor, per ThisIsAnfield.
“We had established common ground with him on many issues, including his salary. I believe that if the new management makes such a request, Salah will wear the Fenerbahce jersey. We would be happy to work with the new management on the negotiations.”
A plethora of high profile players currently play for Fenerbahce, including N’Golo Kante, Fred, Matteo Guendouzi, Ederson and Marco Asesnio.

Salah spoke out about his future last month. He said: “I will still see [about where to go next], I have time now, I am going to the World Cup and then everything will be clear, either if there is a good opportunity before it I will decide, and if it is not there, I will make my decision after the World Cup.”
Salah will play a huge role in Egypt’s World Cup campaign. The Pharaohs, who have been drawn in Group G, kickstart their campaign with a tricky match against Belgium on Monday, June 15. A game against New Zealand on Sunday, June 21 follows, before they conclude their group stage against Iran on Friday, June 26.

Disturbing Reason He’s Been Banned From Golf Club
Golf legend Phil Mickelson has reportedly been kicked out of a San Diego golf club following allegations that he made unwanted physical contact with a female employee.
The initial report from Golf Digest came in the spring, when Mickelson had his membership at The Farms terminated due to an alleged incident.
The employee accused the 55-year-old of “nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact” towards her before a game of golf, with Mickelson said to have left the property after being challenged.
While an investigation into the allegation was launched by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, no evidence to show that an assault occurred was found. However, they do insist that they “would absolutely investigate further if provided additional evidence or information.”
Golf Club’s Statement Regarding Phil Mickelson
The Farms confirmed the expulsion without naming Mickelson in their new statement sent to Golf Digest.
“Following a staff member’s report of member misconduct, the club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident, and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club.”
20 Golfers With Highest Career Earnings on PGA Tour
Three golfers have now earned over $100,000,000 on the PGA Tour, including Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
In addition to this, they further added: “To protect the safety and privacy of our staff and member, we are unable to speak further on the matter.”
The Farms is a private club located in Rancho Santa Fe. It is known for its exclusivity, boasting several well-known attendees such as Annika Sorenstam and Xander Schauffele.
Spokesperson For Mikelson Releases Statement
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Mickelson addressed the allegations with his side of the story.
“Any misunderstanding has been cleared up. Phil continues to attend to a family health matter and is uncertain when he will be able to return to professional golf,” they told Golf Digest.
This isn’t the first controversy that the six-time Major winner has been embroiled in. Back in 2022, he lost major sponsorships and faced backlash after using expletives to describe the Saudi Arabian investment fund. Furthermore, he was involved in an insider training scheme before that, having to repay the almost $1 million sum that he earned from it.
For many, there’s a sense of disappointment regarding Mickelson, especially as these scandals continue to tarnish his legacy. At 50 years old, he became the oldest Major champion in golf history, when he won the 2021 PGA Championship. Once a fan-favourite, now cast away due to more problems.

Rangers Eye Move For Wantaway Everton Star Nathan Patterson
Rangers need to resolve their lack of depth at right-back ahead of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season – and a former player is reportedly on their radar.
James Tavernier has ended his 11-year spell with the club while Max Aarons has returned to Bournemouth after limited minutes during his season-long loan at Ibrox.
Belgium-based defender Bryan Reynolds has emerged as a target with an offer of £2.2million from Rangers already rejected. Reynolds has just one year left on his deal with Pro League side K.V.C. Westerlo, who are willing to sell for the right price.
However, if Rangers have difficulty getting a deal done, there are other options being eyed by the Scottish Premiership giants.
Rangers eye Nathan Patterson move
According to TEAMtalk, Everton are ready to listen to offers for Nathan Patterson. The Toffees value the player at around £12million, with the Scotland international joining the Merseyside club for a fee of £16m back in 2022.
Rangers are described as ‘keeping tabs on the situation’ with Patterson ready to leave Everton after failing to nail down a regular place in the starting XI during his time on Merseyside.
Championship side Sheffield United have emerged as contenders to sign the right-back, who could attract further interest if he performs well for Scotland at the World Cup.
Patterson only started three Premier League games for Everton last term, and played in just seven league games in total. He is set to turn 25 in October and needs to begin playing regularly.
Nathan Patterson return makes sense for Rangers
Signing Patterson would carry less risk for Rangers. Both he and Reynolds are a similar age and while Patterson has struggled with injury and a lack of minutes, he has already proven he can handle the rigours of the Scottish Premiership.
The biggest issue is the steep difference in the duo’s respective valuations. Patterson could cost four times the price of Reynolds if Rangers opted to make the Everton man their priority signing.
While Patterson is keen to leave, the Toffees are only willing to sell him if they sign another right-back this window.

Several targets have been identified as David Moyes looks to other options.
Patterson has seen moves to Sevilla and Genoa collapse within the last 12 months after Everton were unable to sign a replacement. He has just one year left on his contract the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Rangers might be able to secure him for a lower fee – but only if other clubs are unwilling to do business for less than £12million.
