James McClean Told to Retire Due to Injury Aged 37
Former Premier League and Republic of Ireland star James McClean has revealed that he has been told to retire by doctors following a hip injury.
McClean, who has played for the likes of Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic, Stoke City, and Wrexham, had a fine career at the top level before returning to hometown club Derry City in January after 15 years in English football.
But the boyhood return has become something of a nightmare, with McClean suffering injuries since signing due to the team playing on an artificial pitch. That has seen his recurring hip injuries continue to plague him.
McClean Releases Statement on Retirement
McClean has been dealing with the issue and has been training despite it; however, he released a statement on social media announcing that doctors have advised him to hang up his boots as a result of the hip problem.
“To be honest, this is a difficult post for me to write for a number of reasons – mainly due to the uncertainty of the outcome – but I feel it’s best to put it in black and white,” he wrote.
“For the past few years, I have been playing through difficulties with my hip and though I have managed and played through the pain, the impact of training and playing on astro has sped up the damage much faster than I ever anticipated.
“The past six weeks have been hell – pain is something I have been able to get on with and play with throughout my career, but it is the restriction and not being able to move which is what I am struggling with physically obviously, but also mentally.
“Never mind trying to compete on the football pitch, but just every day life, playing with my wains, putting on socks, walking, etc.
“I was told by a specialist 10 days ago that my body currently ‘has no business being on a football pitch’ due to the severity of the damage to my hip. I respect his honesty and his expert opinion, but I have never been one to lay down without a fight.
“Tomorrow’s appointment is a last chance for me to hopefully get a surgery – if it’s even a possibility – one which will allow me to do what I have dreamt of doing, and that’s being able to contribute while in an acceptable physical state to do so. That is playing for a club I love in Derry City.
“I felt it was important for me to share this because it could be a while if ever even – until I have the opportunity to do so again.”
McClean Continues to Train With Derry City
McClean earned 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland before retiring from international duty in 2023, having previously played for Northern Ireland at Under-21 level.
His career has also not been short of controversy, with the winger refusing to wear a poppy for the majority of his time in the top-flight, as it went against his beliefs. That was on show once again in his final game for Wrexham before returning to Derry City, which infuriated some fans.
Despite his hip problems, it’s reported that McClean has been training all week and is hoping to return to action following a recent suspension for two yellow cards in his last game against Dundalk.

Ivory Coast Star’s Tactical Profile
Yan Diomande has made waves this season after a stellar campaign for Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
After netting three goals in 18 minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt in December, Diomande became the second-youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga.
With 22 goal contributions across 36 appearances in all competitions, Leipzig will face a stern challenge if they are to keep their star youngster away from the clutches of Europe’s elite.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with a summer swoop, while other top European clubs, including Arsenal, are also believed to be keen on recruiting the highly regarded youngster.

A right-footed winger, comfortable playing off of either flank, Diomande was a thorn in the side of almost every Bundesliga fullback during the 2025/26 season. Explosive, strong and agile, the Ivory Coast international, who has already become a key figure for his nation, does not rely on flashy skills or unnecessary flair, but instead uses his strengths to his advantage.
Whilst his right foot may be his ‘stronger foot’, the fact that seven of his 12 Bundesliga goals have come from his left would suggest that both feet are equally effective at finding the back of the net. Given that he is able to play with both feet, the classic defensive advice of “show him down the line” is not necessarily efficacious, with his deliveries into the box just as terrifying as the prospect of him shaping up for a shot on goal.
And whilst his finishing may not be at the level of some of the game’s most elite forwards, the natural quality and instinct that Diomande has demonstrated in the 2025/26 season, along with the variety of his finishes, offers a solid platform from which he can build on.
Take his hat-trick against Frankfurt, for example. His first was an instinctive, right-footed finish, high into the roof of the net. His second came as a delicate, left-footed shot from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. A perfect through-ball from Nicolas Seiwald set up Diomande’s hat-trick, as the winger rounded the keeper and slotted home his third goal in 18 minutes. With such a varied range of finishes, his unpredictability makes defending against him a real challenge.

Just a quick glance at the stats is enough for anyone to tell that Diomande has the potential to be a superstar. In 2025/26, he won more duels and completed more successful dribbles than any other winger in the Bundesliga, whilst also making a high number of ball recoveries, particularly in the final third, forcing high turnovers in much more advanced areas of the pitch.
In terms of goal-scoring wingers, only Bayern Munich’s Luis Diaz and Michael Olise netted more than Diomande in the German top division this season, which is not at all surprising given that the 34-time league winners netted 122 goals in the campaign.
But it’s not just Diomande’s eye for goal that sets him apart from other players in his position, his 10.12 expected assists this season places him in the 97th percentile, whilst only five per cent of Bundesliga wingers have recorded more than the Ivorian’s 896 successful passes this season.

Yan Diomande Dribbling Skills in Focus
Yan Diomande’s biggest asset is his creative dribbling ability. His effectiveness with both feet allows him to manipulate his way around defenders with ease, and his close-control ensures he escapes with the ball, even in the tightest of areas.
Speaking on his tricky winger, Leipzig head coach Ole Werner said:
He often gets past his opponents without any tricks, simply because he’s so dynamic.
His most common and most effective maneuver is his half-turn. Oftentimes, in matches, Diomande will look to receive the ball facing sideways, or even with his back to goal, and will use his strength the muscle defenders away, allowing the ball to roll past his body, before using his lightning-fast acceleration to drive into the space vacated by the defender. Other times, he will gently knock the ball around the onrushing fullback, creating a yard of space from which he can attack the box.
His six-foot frame also makes him a nightmare to compete against. His centre of gravity makes him difficult to knock off balance whilst still being big enough to compete physically with stronger defenders.
Who is Yan Diomande similar to?
As an explosive winger with impressive dribbling skills, Diomande has drawn comparisons to Sadio Mane, who has exhibited similar attributes throughout his career. He is quite like his RB Leipzig team-mate Antonio Nusa in terms of directness, while others he has been compared with include James Maddison, Pedro and Inaki Williams.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Puts Alexi Lalas in His Place During World Cup
Thierry Henry produced a priceless reaction live on FOX Sports after Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Alexi Lalas in his place on live TV following France’s 3-1 win over Senegal at the 2026 World Cup.
The trio have only been working together since the tournament began last week but there have already been moments of tension between Lalas, the former United States international, and his fellow pundits.
Lalas made headlines last week after describing British presenter James Corden as a “full kit w***er” live on TV on day two of the tournament, prompting a shocked reaction from his fellow panellists.
Since then, viewers on social media have been speculating that Zlatan and Henry have little time for the outspoken Lalas.
Zlatan Shuts Down ‘Arrogant’ France Accusations
There was another tense moment between Ibrahimovic and Lalas on Tuesday, following France’s victory over Senegal.
Lalas attempted to spark a discussion over whether the French team were guilty of being arrogant during the goalless first half. The 56-year-old made the comment after former USA star Landon Donovan called Les Bleus “arrogant” and “casual” in their approach during the opening 45 minutes.
“The reality is, if they are arrogant, it’s because they can do things like that,” Lalas said, highlighting France’s second-half performance in which Kylian Mbappe scored twice. However, Zlatan shut down any suggestions of France being arrogant, responding:
“It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence. Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance, intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”
Henry’s eyes widened and stayed that way for several seconds as the dust settled on Zlatan’s cutting response. Watch the clip below:

France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, struggled during the first half against Senegal in hot conditions at the New York New Jersey Stadium. But Didier Deschamps’ side found their rhythm after the break and secured all three points thanks to Mbappe’s brace and another goal from substitute Bradley Barcola.
However, France only find themselves second in Group I after the first round of matches due to Norway securing a 4-1 win over Iraq. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, making his maiden appearance at a World Cup finals, scored twice at the Boston Stadium.

Ruben Amorim Wants Manuel Ugarte From Man Utd
Ruben Amorim could offer Manuel Ugarte an escape route, as The Mirror claims that the former Manchester United head coach wants the midfielder at his next club, AC Milan.
The Uruguayan international has struggled to make much of an impression since his switch from Paris Saint-Germain, having dropped down the team pecking order in the past year.
Ugarte’s struggles have been well-documented, and as Man United look to bolster their midfield ranks, he has been put among the players shortlisted for a potential exit this summer.
As they look to recoup much of the £42 million spent on the 25-year-old this summer, Amorim could give the Red Devils a much-needed financial boost.
AC Milan Want Manuel Ugarte
According to the report from The Mirror, Amorim is looking at a potential move for Ugarte this summer, with the hopes of reuniting at AC Milan.
It’s stated that Man United have slapped a £30 million price tag on the midfielder, as they hope to land a decent fee to move him on three years before the end of his contract.
As it stands, the Rossoneri are currently unwilling to match that demand, but talks are planned so that the two clubs can reach a compromise to get a deal over the line.
There is some hope that a positive World Cup for Ugarte, who is featuring for Uruguay in North America this summer, will help the Red Devils in their case to get a strong fee for him.
It remains to be seen whether that will be the case, but any move is likely to free up funds for the club to go back into the market for even better options.

Man United’s Midfield Refresh
A transfer exit for Ugarte could help get the midfield refresh at Manchester United firmly underway, replacing a wantaway star with some quality.
Ederson’s move from Atalanta is already agreed in a huge boost for the position, while talks are continuing over the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.
At least two additions to the central ranks are expected, but an exit for Ugarte for a strong fee could free up funds to add a third midfielder who could make all the difference.
Next Rodri: Man Utd Want £60.5m Midfield Star After Ederson
Manchester United are in the market for midfielders, with a former Manchester City academy player in their sights.
Links have continued for the likes of Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba, who may emerge as strong candidates later in the transfer window.
It remains to be seen if that is possible, especially with interest for a new left-back, backup goalkeeper, and a forward of some description before the window closes.
