The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of a 27-year-old man following a violent clash at a naming ceremony in Kirfi Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on June 25, 2026, when a confrontation broke out between youths from Dosi and Tudun Sullubawa communities during the celebration.

The police said the victim, identified as Sani Abacha Alhaji Jabbi, was allegedly attacked with a machete during the violence.

He was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where medical personnel later confirmed him dead.

Following investigations, police arrested three suspects aged 18, 17 and 16 in connection with the incident.

The command said preliminary investigations had been concluded, and the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution of the suspects.

The police assured residents that efforts were ongoing to ensure justice is served and urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could help prevent violent crimes.

A 23-year-old Nigerian student in the United States, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after admitting to illegally possessing a firearm and firing multiple shots during a confrontation involving his former girlfriend and their infant child.

The conviction was announced in a statement issued by Kurt Wall and obtained on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Oghenebrume was sentenced by U.S. Chief Judge Shelly Dick after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by “an alien admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also disclosed that the Nigerian student faces deportation after completing his prison term.

“He is also subject to removal or deportation from the United States upon completion of his sentence,” the statement noted.

Authorities stated that Oghenebrume admitted to possessing a Glock model 43X 9mm pistol on February 7, 2025, while residing in the United States on an F-1 student visa.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred after Oghenebrume’s former girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived at his apartment with the baby while he was allegedly inside with another woman.

“Oghenebrume, who had been in the apartment with another young woman, went outside, and an argument ensued between him and the mother of his child.

“During this argument, and while the baby was present, Oghenebrume discharged the firearm,” the statement said.

The authorities explained that the dispute continued after the woman entered the apartment and allegedly discovered him with another woman.

“That argument spilled out of the apartment, and Oghenebrume discharged the firearm more times as the mother of his child fled. Multiple bullet strikes were observed in the walls of the apartment complex,” prosecutors added.

Investigators further alleged that Oghenebrume smashed his former girlfriend’s mobile phone and took custody of the baby, who reportedly remained at the scene throughout the incident.

The statement also revealed that the Nigerian student attempted to evade arrest after deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office arrived at the apartment complex.

According to prosecutors, the woman later approached the other female occupant in the apartment and requested help in retrieving the child.

“She agreed to help and was able to get the child from Oghenebrume,” the statement said.

Authorities stated that Oghenebrume ignored repeated commands from deputies and attempted to walk away before allegedly discarding the firearm into nearby shrubs.

“When East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the apartment complex, Oghenebrume walked away from them, ignoring their commands, and discarded the Glock model 43X, 9mm pistol into some shrubs. Oghenebrume was detained soon thereafter,” the statement added.

Investigators also obtained statements from a neighbour who reportedly heard the gunfire and told authorities that the noise caused his ears to ring.

During a post-Miranda interview with detectives, Oghenebrume reportedly admitted firing the weapon.

“He claimed that he had wanted his ex-girlfriend to go home and that he had shot the gun to scare her away,” the prosecutors stated.

Three artisanal miners have died while two others lost consciousness following a mining incident in Riruwai, Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday after fumes from a water-pumping machine reportedly filled a mining pit where the victims were working.

The deceased were identified as Haruna Usaini and Yusha’u Sale, both from Dan Isa community in Rimin Gado Local Government Area, and another miner identified simply as Danfuli from Daurawa in Doguwa LGA.

Speaking to DAILY POST, an eyewitness, Salisu Abdulhamid, said the tragedy happened after workers attempted to drain water that had accumulated in the pit following heavy rainfall.

“Heavy rain fell the previous night and the mining pit became flooded, so work was suspended. The following day, a new water-pumping machine was brought in to remove the water before work could resume. The machine emitted fumes that filled the pit. The fumes caused the deaths of three people, while two others collapsed. Those who died included Yusha’u and another man from Daurawa,” he said.

A relative of one of the victims, Basiru Sale, said the family was in deep grief over the loss of his younger brother, Yusha’u Sale.

“He was my younger brother from the same parents. We can only pray that Allah forgives him. He had travelled to Doguwa for this mining work just seven days ago. The last time I saw him alive was before he left, and now it is his body that has been brought back,” he said tearfully.

Family members said Haruna Usaini and Yusha’u Sale would be buried on Thursday in Dan Isa community, Rimin Gado Local Government Area.

The latest incident has again drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding artisanal mining activities in Doguwa and neighbouring Tudun Wada Local Government Areas, where many youths from across Kano State travel in search of work.

Investigations by DAILY POST indicate that many mining sites in the area operate without the required licences.

During an inspection in June, a Kano State government delegation led by the state revenue agency raised concerns over widespread illegal mining activities and the absence of proper safety standards.

The team also shut down several mining companies allegedly operating without licences.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kano State Ministry of Solid Minerals nor the Kano State Police Command had issued an official statement on the incident.
