There was tension in Kofan Kaura, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday as residents were seen burning the 2027 senatorial election posters of Governor Abdullahi Sule.

The visibly angry residents also burnt flags of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and some bunches of brooms, a symbol of the party.

The short video of the incident was accompanied by the statement – “We reject rigging’, ‘We reject imposition.”

DAILY POST reports that Governor Sule reversed an earlier position where he vowed on national television not to seek any elective office after completing his tenure.

The governor, who is serving his second and final term, is vying for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in next general elections.

He won the Nasarawa North APC senatorial primary election after polling 47,393 votes to defeat his rival, Silas Agara, who got a total of 2,915 votes.

The member representing Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Jeremiah Umaru, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, citing concerns over the conduct of the party’s recently concluded primary elections.

Umaru, popularly known as Jakadan Wamba, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC Chairman of Gitta Ward in Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

In the letter dated May 28, 2026, the lawmaker said developments surrounding the party’s primary elections had left him disillusioned and unable to continue his political journey within the ruling party.

He expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of the values of fairness, transparency, justice, and internal democracy, which he said formed the foundation upon which many members joined and worked for the party’s growth.

According to him, the events that characterized the primary election process significantly weakened his confidence in the party’s commitment to credible and inclusive democratic practices.

The federal lawmaker noted that, as a loyal member who invested considerable time, effort, and resources in building the APC, it was painful to witness what he termed the increasing prevalence of imposition, manipulation, and disregard for the collective wishes of party members.

He maintained that the experiences of the primaries convinced him that the party was drifting away from the principles that once inspired the confidence and commitment of its supporters.

“I can no longer, in good conscience, remain part of a system that fails to uphold fairness, credibility, and respect for the aspirations of dedicated members,” he stated.

Despite his decision to leave the APC, Umaru expressed gratitude to party members, leaders, and associates with whom he worked during his years in the party.

He also appreciated the opportunities and experiences gained while serving under the platform and wished well to members who remain committed to advancing democratic ideals within the party.

His resignation adds to the growing list of defections and political realignments in Nasarawa State following the conclusion of party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A House of Representatives aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency, David Ayuba Dumwe, has approached the Federal High Court in Lafia to challenge the alleged emergence of Beauty Sudar Aliyu as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 general elections.

In the suit marked FHC/LF/CS/9/2026, Dumwe is seeking judicial intervention over what he described as an unlawful declaration of a candidate without due consultation and compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and Beauty Sudar Aliyu were joined as second and third defendants, respectively.

According to court documents, the plaintiff contends that the PDP announced Aliyu as its consensus candidate without obtaining his consent as an aspirant and without conducting a valid primary election for the constituency.

Dumwe argued that the action allegedly violated established democratic procedures and the relevant provisions governing the nomination of candidates for elective offices.

The aspirant is therefore asking the court to determine the legality of the purported consensus arrangement and the party’s nomination process for the federal constituency seat.

He further maintained that all aspirants seeking elective positions under a political party are entitled to a transparent and lawful process as stipulated by the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

The legal action comes amid heightened political activities and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties across the country concluding their candidate selection processes.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lafia has fixed June 16, 2026, for hearing of the matter.
