2027: I’ll tackle insecurity – Atiku pledges at ADC presidential screening panel

Published

A statement issued by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, after the exercise described the engagement as beyond routine party procedures.

It said that the exercise provided the former vice-president an opportunity to present practical solutions aimed at rescuing Nigeria from economic stagnation and security challenges.

The statement quoted Atiku as expressing concern over mass unemployment, institutional decline and persistent insecurity, which, he said, had exposed citizens to kidnappings, killings and violent attacks.

He said that Nigeria could not continue on its current path, where hardship persisted, businesses collapsed, and investor confidence declined because of uncertain economic policies.

Atiku stated that his economic blueprint would focus on job creation, private sector expansion, fiscal discipline, stable macro-economic management and attracting sustainable investments into Nigeria.

He said that his security agenda would prioritise intelligence-driven operations, improved inter-agency collaboration, decentralised security structures and decisive actions against criminal activities across the country.

“At this defining moment in our national life, Nigeria does not need experiments. It needs tested leadership and courage to make necessary national decisions,” he said.

The presidential aspirant reaffirmed his commitment to building a secure, united and prosperous Nigeria where citizens could live peacefully and pursue opportunities with dignity and confidence.

2027: I will wrestle my opponents to finishing point – Tinubu vows

With Nigeria getting close to the 2027 presidential election, President Bola Tinubu has vowed to wrestle the opposition to the finish point.

Tinubu spoke during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, led by its President, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, at the State House on Tuesday.

The President also declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is neutral.

He said, “I asked for this job. I’m in it. Those who will take it from me will try. They will try. All is fair in politics, and it’s equal opportunity.

“INEC, you mentioned, is neutral. They’ve never, never intimidated anybody. If political opponents are crying wolves, maybe they are afraid of their own shadows and the uncertainty in the companies they keep, not me.

“I’m ready, but I won’t give them a red carpet. I won’t offer them the leash to tie me and rope me. No, we wrestle each other to the finishing point.”

The 2027 general election will commence with the presidential election scheduled for 16 January 2027.

Senatorial and House of Representatives elections would be held on the same day across Nigeria.

The polls to elect state governors and members of the state assemblies will come up on 6 February 2027.

Tinubu, who is the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, would trade tackle with Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, among others in the presidential election.

Osun 2026: INEC extends PVC collection deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, at Registration Area centres across Osun State until Friday, July 31, 2026.

The move is coming after complaints from voters and large crowds at distribution centres.

In a statement issued by the Head of Department, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Inclusivity, INEC Osun State, Ariyo Rufus, for the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Commission said the extension followed the conclusion of the initial exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, July 22, and was originally scheduled to end on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

According to the Commission, “322,822 Permanent Voter Cards, representing 62 per cent of the available PVCs, were collected during the exercise. The extension would enable more registered voters to obtain their cards before the governorship election.”

The statement said, “Having regard to complaints and large crowds at collection centres as well as other difficulties, the Commission has approved the extension of PVC collection at Registration Areas to Friday 31st July, 2026, to enable more eligible voters to exercise their civic right.”

INEC also announced that PVC collection at the Local Government Area offices would now begin from August 1 and continue until August 7, 2026, replacing the earlier commencement date to accommodate the extension at the Registration Area level.

The Commission urged all registered voters who are yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards to take advantage of the additional period.

“Concerned Registered Voters are urged to take advantage of this window and collect their Permanent Voter Cards,” it stated.
