Xabi Alonso Doesn’t Rule Out Selling 3 Chelsea Stars
Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso was unable to rule out the possibility of losing three key stars this summer, as he looks ahead to taking charge of the Blues at the end of the Premier League season.
The west London outfit have endured a difficult campaign, with a bright start under Enzo Maresca quickly wiped away with his dismissal, before Liam Rosenior’s short stint as boss turned sour.
While many Chelsea fans will want the season over with, holding hope that the arrival of Alonso will bring brighter days ahead, there’s still a battle to be had for European football on the final day.
Beyond that, there are question marks over who will stay, who will go, and who will arrive at Stamford Bridge during a pivotal summer transfer window, with the new manager unable to give much insight as things stand.
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea Transfer Response
With Chelsea missing out on Champions League football, and unrest seemingly surrounding some players in the squad, there are doubts over which players will be kept and who could be sold in the summer.
Among them are Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella, both of whom have been linked with a move to Barcelona, and Enzo Fernandez, who is rumoured with interest from Real Madrid.
All three were a topic of conversation for Alonso in an interview with El Chiringuito TV in his first public discussion since taking over the job at Chelsea.
When the interviewer suggested that the manager wouldn’t want to lose those key players, he simply responded: “Well… this is football, and we’ll make a good team.”
It’s something of a non-answer, which is telling, and suggests there is uncertainty over which players will be left at Chelsea this summer, and who could move on.
Alonso may have his own judgments too, with time now being taken to see how the squad best fits together to get the best possible results. Whether that means some brutal exits for some key players remains to be seen, but time will tell how the summer will shape up for the club.
Chelsea Financial Impact
Failure to qualify for the Champions League is set to cost Chelsea dearly heading into the summer, with a potential rethink needed about the current transfer strategy.
The Blues have generated roughly £79 million in prize money from the competition this season, making their way to the round of 16 before exiting at the hands of PSG.
Adding the additional revenue of tickets, sponsorship, and hospitality, and there is a likelihood that Chelsea will miss out on over £100 million from not being in the Champions League.
That, along with the need to refresh the squad in key areas, is what could force the club into making some key sales this summer to help generate funds.
Every Chelsea Player’s Wage [2026]
Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo all feature as every Chelsea player’s wages are listed.
This will be particularly important in the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) era of Premier League finances, which will place a cap on spend based on a percentage of revenues.
If Chelsea can increase their revenues, then they will have more to spend, with the Champions League a clear way to generate extra income over some of their rivals.
It means this summer could be one of restructuring, ensuring that players can be sold to bolster elsewhere, rather than buying before selling later in the market.
Whether it’ll be someone like Fernandez, who will have a large amount of amortisation value still on his contract, meaning a huge fee is needed to land any profit, remains to be seen. Either way, the task is monumental, and it’ll need to be done right to give Alonso the best chance possible to succeed.

Newcastle Star Anthony Gordon Reaches ‘Total Agreement’ to Join Barcelona
Newcastle United endured a season to forget as they finished in the bottom half of the Premier League with no European football on offer next campaign.
After a memorable 2024-25 campaign that saw the club lift the Carabao Cup and qualify for the Champions League, the last 10 months have been rife with inconsistency and lacklustre displays.
For a second summer in a row, Newcastle face a tough battle to keep hold of their top players. Sandro Tonali has been linked with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Anthony Gordon is attracting strong interest from across Europe.
Bayern Munich are keen on the player while Liverpool are not out of the race to sign the boyhood Reds fan.The Magpies value Gordon at £75m and are reluctant to sell him unless that valuation is met.
Anthony Gordon agrees personal terms with Barcelona
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano expects Gordon to leave St James’ Park this summer. While there is interest from Bayern and Liverpool, Barcelona are ‘big, big fans of the player’.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “I expect him to leave Newcastle, I expect movements around Anthony Gordon.
“Barcelona, I have to tell you this, Barcelona are really big, big, big fans of Anthony Gordon.”
Gordon clearly has no shortage of suitors with Romano also revealing that several Premier League clubs have made calls to understand the situation on the player’s future.
The England international joined Newcastle in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £45m. He became the Magpies’ all-time top-scorer in the Champions League this season and netted a total of 17 times in 46 games this term.
In a fresh update, Romano posted on X that Gordon has now agreed personal terms to join Barcelona. He said: “Total agreement reached between Anthony Gordon and Barcelona on personal terms
“Barcelona are in direct, official talks with Newcastle to close the deal club-to-club. Barça want to get the deal done quickly to anticipate PL clubs and Bayern, still active behind scenes.”
Where should Anthony Gordon go if he leaves Newcastle United?
While Gordon seemingly has his pick of clubs, Newcastle are likely to prioritise the biggest offer over the player’s preference.
At Bayern, he would be competing with Michael Olise for a spot on the right wing while at Barca he would need to unseat Lamine Yamal if he wanted to play in his natural position.
At Liverpool, an avenue to first-team football is much more open. Mohamed Salah has left the Merseyside club after nine years at Anfield and the right wing position is up for grabs.
Jeremie Frimpong has been used in an attacking role in the last few months but he is a right-back by trade. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa’s game-time has continued to be heavily limited under Arne Slot.
Gordon also knows Liverpool striker Alexander Isak well, with the pair playing 84 times together at Newcastle before the Sweden international joined the Reds.
However, with the player agreeing personal terms to join Barca, he is backing himself to make an impact in Spain as the clubs continue talks over a deal.

Liverpool Make Move to Hire Andoni Iraola Amid Arne Slot Sack Decision
Liverpool have made a move to hire Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as they consider their options around Arne Slot, according to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Liverpool ended a tumultuous Premier League campaign 25 points behind champions Arsenal, in what has to go down as a poor defence of their 2025 league title.
The Reds were affected by situations happening on and off the pitch, with Jota’s tragic death prior to the season starting understandably having a huge impact on the club and his teammates.
On the pitch, Slot had to do without record signing Alexander Isak for much of the season due to injury issues, while another big signing in Florian Wirtz took time to get used to the demands of English football.
Liverpool chiefs are said to be ready to give Slot next season to improve matters on the pitch with credit in the bank from winning the league title in his first season in charge at Anfield, but there are likely to be big changes on Merseyside this summer.
Two big dressing room personalities in Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are already confirmed to be departing, while no new contract agreement has been reached for Ibrahima Konate yet, with his deal due to expire next month.
Sky Sports: Liverpool ‘Make Move’ for Andoni Iraola
According to Sky Sports Italy, the interest in hiring Andoni Iraola is ramping up.
The Spaniard led Bournemouth to Europa League football in the Premier League this season, weeks after he announced he would be leaving the south coast outfit this summer when his contract expired.
Reports in recent days have suggested that Serie A giants AC Milan are keen to bring the 43-year-old to Italy to replace Max Allegri, with the San Siro outfit also resigned to playing Europa League football next season despite spending most of the season in the Champions League spots in the Italian top flight.
Milan aren’t the only club interested in his services, according to Sky Sports Italy, with Bayer Leverkusen and two Premier League clubs, Crystal Palace and Liverpool, also making moves for him.
Liverpool Move for Iraola Could Happen in Future
According to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, any move for Iraola by Liverpool will depend on the club sacking Slot.
The Reds are said to have been given a ‘glimmer of hope’ after the Spaniard’s negotiations with AC Milan, as he appears to be ready to take his time on deciding his next club.
The Italian reporter has also suggested that the talks over Iraola would be for the future, rather than imminently, but the Merseysiders may well risk losing him to another big club now if they decide to wait.
All the signs are that Slot will carry on for now, but Liverpool are clearly sounding out their options for their next manager.
Iraola is one of the most promising up-and-coming managers in European football after the incredible job he has done with Bournemouth, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp labelling him as being an ‘elite’ coach.

Aston Villa Eye Move To Sign Martinez Replacement This Summer
Aston Villa are keen to swoop for a Manchester City player if one of their Europa League heroes moves on this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
Unai Emery’s side won their first piece of European silverware since 1982 with a 3-0 win over SC Freiburg last week. They also secured fourth spot in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Manchester City in their final game of the season.
Qualifying for the Champions League will give Villa greater wiggle room with the Premier League’s financial rules as they now plan to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
They are still facing the prospect of selling some big names, with Morgan Rogers one player who could leave the club. Arsenal are the latest side to express an interest in the England international.
Aston Villa target Man City goalkeeper James Trafford
Another player who could depart this summer is goalkeeper Emi Martinez. The 2022 World Cup winner is under contract at Villa Park until 2029 but was the subject of interest from Manchester United last summer.
The Red Devils opted to sign Senne Lammens in a deadline day deal with Martinez remaining at Villa. The goalkeeper was dropped by Emery as speculation mounted over his future but after the window shut he worked his way back into the squad. He kept a clean sheet in the Europa League final and played a total of 49 games in all competitions.
According to The Daily Mail, Man City goalkeeper James Trafford is Villa’s number one target if Martinez departs this summer.
Trafford joined City 12 months ago and looked poised to be their new number one. However, he has found himself playing second fiddle this season after Pep Guardiola made a late summer swoop for Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the ex-AC Milan star made a surprise exit from European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Any move for Trafford could be complicated by his £100,000-a-week wages.
Aston Villa eyeing a busy summer
Villa have this week emerged as contenders to sign Newcastle United star Harvey Barnes as Emery seeks further additions to his attacking options.
The Magpies player could be tempted by the lure of Champions League football, while his family are still based in the Midlands.
Meanwhile, there is also the possibility that a permanent deal is completed for Jadon Sancho. The ex-Borussia Dortmund man is out of contract at parent club Manchester United next month and would be available on a free transfer.
Harry Wilson, who is also set to be available on a free transfer, is another player of interest to Villa. The Welsh international has not penned fresh terms with Fulham and is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.
