5 Ibrahima Konate Replacements Liverpool Should Sign Including Rapid Premier League Ace
Liverpool may need to dip into the transfer market for a centre-back once again, with reports ramping up over a potential exit for Ibrahima Konate.
The 27-year-old is about to enter the final month of his contract at Anfield, and while discussions have been ongoing over an extension, it looks like those efforts will be fruitless.
Konate‘s potential exit from Liverpool leaves the club in a tricky situation once again, as they ponder their next move, with replacements likely to come to the fore.
Jeremy Jacquet’s impending arrival from Rennes will help the Reds, while Giovanni Leoni’s return from injury will also bolster the options available.
However, there are also questions over the longevity of Virgil van Dijk, who is now entering the final year of his own contract, meaning any transfer delayed this summer will only force a move next year.
So, with Konate’s exit set to trigger a domino effect, here’s a look at a few options Liverpool could look at to help replace the outgoing French defender.
Micky van de Ven (Tottenham)
Micky van de Ven has been linked with Liverpool in the past, and it would be no surprise if he is once again after the news of Konate’s departure.
The Tottenham star is rapid, among the quickest in the world in the backline, and has Premier League experience to bring across to Anfield.
At 25 years old, there is plenty of progression to come from Van de Ven, who has had some tough times in a Spurs shirt, but it could be a smart long-term move for Liverpool.
The defender’s pace could help replace the speed that would be lost by Konate, while it could help cover Van Dijk and get the Reds back to a more intense style of play.
Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund)
Another defender approaching the peak years of his career is Nico Schlotterbeck. The German defender has impressed in the Bundesliga, since breaking through at Freiburg, before making the switch to Borussia Dortmund.
The 26-year-old has attracted plenty of interest, not just for his defensive exploits, but for the quality that he possesses on the ball to help teams build from the back.
Schlotterbeck signed a new deal back in April, extending his stay until 2031, but reports have claimed that a £52 million clause exists that could allow him to join a team he would view as a “dream club”.
While Liverpool haven’t been explicitly named as one of those “dream club” options, like Real Madrid have, it may be worth a shot to see if the centre-back fancies a move to the Premier League.
Castello Lukeba (RB Leipzig)
Another up-and-coming defender in European football is Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig, who continues to impress at the age of just 23 years old.
The Frenchman already has nearly 200 appearances to his name, having featured for Lyon before making his move to Germany, where he continues to steadily rise.
Not only would the defender offer promise for the future, but there could be a bargain on the cards, with Leipzig needing to sell players despite qualification to the Champions League.
That may help Liverpool land a player who will be in their backline for some time, while also landing an ideal transfer fee to free up funds elsewhere.
Levi Colwill (Chelsea)
Liverpool’s interest in Levi Colwill in the past never led to a formal move being made, but perhaps it is time to revive that interest this summer.
Chelsea are in need of player sales to help generate revenue, after missing out on European qualification, and the defender would represent pure profit if a persuasive deal is on the table.
At 23, Colwill already looks like a centre-back playing well beyond his years, while he has shown elements of leadership that would be vital to Liverpool in this squad’s new era.
The defender is home-grown, which helps with squad registration, while he has a contract that runs until 2029 which could offer a tiny bit of leverage in discussions.
There may be concerns over his recent ACL injury, but Colwill hasn’t missed a beat since returning to the pitch, and would be a solid addition.
Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Perhaps the easiest deal to complete is the one that Liverpool should be looking to sort. And in this instance, that is a return for Jarell Quansah.
The defender left the Reds last July to join Bayer Leverkusen, joining them for a fee worth up to £35 million, but the Reds inserted a buy-back clause.
That clause stands at roughly £69 million, and if terms can be agreed with the player, then a quick return could be on the cards for the young centre-back.
Xabi Alonso Wants Chelsea to Raid Liverpool to Sign £245,000-a-Week Star in Blockbuster Deal
This would be a blockbuster move.
Quansah has played 44 times for Leverkusen in the past season, scoring five goals in that time and impressing in Champions League outings.
The 23-year-old’s return would help bolster the backline for the long-term, but it would prove costly to get done.

Carlo Ancelotti Told to Axe Danilo After Brazil vs Japan
Football fans are in agreement over which player needs to be axed from Brazil’s starting lineup following their narrow 2-1 World Cup win vs Japan on Monday evening. Despite winning it late on with Gabriel Martinelli squeezing in a 95th minute goal, Carlo Ancelotti will not have been happy with everything he saw in Houston.
For decades, Brazil have carried a certain kind of ‘aura’ into tournaments that made them a feared opposition, despite being a shell of their glorified past. Now, it feels like their rivals are finally taking advantage of the reality of which the South American giants aren’t as good as their five stars would suggest, even if they got away with it this time.
And one player, more than any, showed that some deadwood still lingers in squad selections, despite calls from fans for years for him to replaced. It is unlikely he gets to start again in the Round of 16.
Brazil Ace is Being Begged to Retire Despite Round of 16 Qualification
Reacting to Danilo’s performance, which saw him produce the lowest Sofascore rating of everyone at the Houston Stadium, one X user wrote: “How Daniel is still playing professional football is unreal to me,” as a second added about the Flamengo defender (see the full post below):
“It’s unacceptable for this guy to be a starter for Brazil. No, I’m not being opportunistic. We’ve been saying the same thing about Danilo since 2022.
“He’s an excellent leader, but he no longer has what it takes to be a starter for the Brazilian National Team. Unacceptable pass. How reckless.”
A third remarked: “The age is really showing in this Brazil team. You’re not gonna get away with playing Danilo in 2026, be for real,” as a fourth continued: “Danilo minutes is malpractice.” Elsewhere, a fifth concluded: “Danilo mistake. It was embarrassing to call him up in 2022 why is he still around in 2026??”
Danilo’s Performance in Numbers
Winners always find a way, but while the attackers put on a resilient showing in the second-half, it always felt like Brazil were one Danilo misstep away from gifting their opponents a way back into things as pressure built. Across 99 minutes, the right-back was responsible for an error that led to the goal, a foul, and general moments of disarray.

A last-gasp Gabriel Martinelli winner breaks Japanese hearts.
He didn’t commit to any tackles, he won just two of his five duels, and his two defensive contributions are cause for serious concern given he had ample time to get involved with protecting Alisson between the sticks but chose to sit further forward.
Maybe he would have been forgiven had he done well in attack, but zero successful dribbles, losing possession 12 times, completing just two out of four long ball attempts and cross attempts shows he was ineffective from back to front.

Brazil 2-1 Japan Player Ratings and Match Highlights
Brazil broke Japan hearts with a last-gasp 2-1 win that took Carlo Ancelotti’s side through to the Round of 16 at the World Cup.
Japan stunned Houston Stadium when they took the lead through Kaishu Sano in the 29th minute. The Mainz midfielder pounced on a poor pass from Danilo, easily surged past Casemiro and slotted the ball past Alisson Becker.
Brazil showed vast improvement in the second half, and Bruno Guimaraes went close in the 51st minute. The Newcastle United skipper’s header produced a superb save from Zion Suzuki.
Somehow, the ball stayed out just moments later when Takehiro Tomiyasu blocked Casemiro’s diving header on the spot. Selecao were knocking on the door and finally breaking down a resilient Japan defence.
Nobody would have complained if Casemiro had been brought off at half-time, but Ancelotti’s trust in the former Manchester United midfielder paid off. He headed home a delightful cross from Gabriel Magalhaes to level proceedings in the 55th minute.
Vinicius Junior then came agonisingly close to giving the South Americans the lead. Suzuki turned the Real Madrid forward’s fine effort onto the post.
The game looked to be headed to extra-time until Guimaraes came up with a moment of brilliance to pick Gabriel Martinelli out. The Arsenal attacker managed to find a way past Suzuki in the 90+6th minute.

Brazil Player Ratings
A sloppy first-half from Brazil reminded fans they are no longer the footballing powerhouse of yesteryear. Vinicius Junior rarely threatened in the first half but did click into gear in the second, while Matheus Cunha didn’t get on the scoresheet but led the line effectively.
Talk about a tale of two halves for Casemiro, who endured a dismal first half, unable to keep up with a lively Japanese side who often left him chasing shadows. He came to the fore in the second half, producing a header that Manchester United fans are all too familiar with.
Danilo’s selection as a starter continues to raise eyebrows, and he struggled in Houston. That wasn’t the case for Marquinhos and Gabriel, particularly the Arsenal centre-back, who produced an inch-perfect cross for the equaliser and showcased his impressive passing.
Brazil left it late but sealed their place in the Round of 16 after Martinelli’s stoppage-time winner. That came after a clever pass from Guimaraes, who showed just why Arsenal are trying to sign him.

Japan Player Ratings
Japan were always a threat on the counter-attack, and their midfield contributed excellently in transition. Particularly Sano, who Casemiro couldn’t contain due to his energy and agility on the break.
Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada rarely put a foot wrong and continues to be a standout performer in Hajime Moriyasu’s side. Up top, Genk attacker Junya Ito constantly looked to take his man on and perhaps deserved to stay on the pitch longer.
Moriyasu deserves huge praise for the way he set his team up as they defended as a team and aggressively dropped into a back-five after taking the lead. Shogo Taniguchi showed his experience at the age of 34, keeping Selecao’s attacking stars at bay.
Between the sticks, Suzuki put in a fantastic display, which included a magnificent save to deny Vinicius. He couldn’t do anything about Casemiro’s header that came at point-blank range.
