The Police in Oyo State has arrested an Islamic cleric, Jamiu Adegunwa, over alleged defamatory publications against the President of the Academy of Islamic Propagation, ACADIP, Mallam Yusuf Adepoju.

Adegunwa was reportedly arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, after failure to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.

According to the prosecution, the cleric is facing allegations of making defamatory publications against Adepoju, his organisation and members of his family through his social media platform, Al-Madrasatu Wahabiya.

The prosecution alleged that the publications, said to have been made from July 6, 2021, to date, caused injury, insult, hatred, enmity and damage to the reputation and character of the complainant.

Prosecuting counsel, Mr J. Oyetunji, also alleged that Adegunwa had previously instituted a suit against the Inspector-General of Police and the then Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Zone 11 before the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking N500 million in damages.

According to the prosecution, “the case was decided in favour of the Police, following which subsequent court orders directed the cleric’s arrest.”

The prosecution also alleged that the offence contravenes Sections 24(1)(a) and (b) and 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

The matter is before the Federal High Court, Osogbo, in Charge No. FHC/OS/86C/2025, where the defendant is facing a one-count charge bordering on alleged defamatory publications.

Ogun State Police Command has commenced statewide enforcement against vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised, or no registration number plates.

DAILY POST reports that the enforcement is in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olutunji Disu.

 The exercise is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing public safety, and denying criminal elements the anonymity often exploited in the commission of crimes.

In a statement on Friday by the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Commanders to impound offending vehicles and carry out thorough investigations in accordance with extant laws.

Babaseyi stated that the enforcement also covers vehicles displaying fake, improperly issued, altered, or otherwise unauthorised registration number plates. 

“However, the directive exempts only those vehicles officially entitled to display flags in line with established protocols,” he added.

The Command advised motorists, transport operators, fleet owners, and members of the public to ensure that their vehicles carry valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. 

“This exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects, and strengthen the overall security architecture of Ogun State,” Babaseyi explained.

The police spokesperson assetted that the officers deployed for the enforcement have been directed to conduct themselves professionally, courteously, and within the ambit of the law.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to comply with this directive while continuing to support the Police with credible and timely information. 

Several shops have been destroyed in a fire outbreak at Bakin Dogo area of Abakwa in Kaduna State, leaving traders counting their losses.

The incident was disclosed in a statement issued by the member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Bello El-Rufai.

However, he did not specify the cause of the fire.

According to the statement, the inferno consumed numerous shops and caused significant economic losses to business owners in the affected area.

In response to the incident, the lawmaker disclosed that a committee headed has been constituted to deliver relief assistance and engage community leaders on measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

The committee is expected to assess the situation on the ground, coordinate the distribution of the intervention fund, and work with stakeholders to strengthen fire prevention and emergency response mechanisms within the community.
