‘FIFA to Investigate’ Referee Shaun Evans Over World Cup Hand Gesture
FIFA are ‘likely to investigate’ after a World Cup official was accused of making a “White power” gesture during Germany’s 7-1 win over Curacao on Sunday.
Footage of referee Shaun Evans making a hand signal immediately went viral across social media.
The Australian A-League official was ‘Support VAR’ for Sunday’s World Cup clash and briefly appeared on the live broadcast shortly before kick-off.
Different Meanings Behind Hand Gesture
Per The Athletic, the gesture – in which the thumb and index finger touch while the other fingers of the hand are outstretched – has, in recent years, been used to symbolise White power. The three remaining fingers signalling a W for White, while the thumb and index finger represent a P for Power.
However, the gesture can also have other meanings. Some people on social media have jumped to Evans’ defence, pointing out that the move is also used as part of the “circle game” – a playground prank in which people trick each other into looking at an OK-like hand gesture made somewhere below the waist. Anyone who looks at the sign receives a light-hearted punch.
FIFA, world football’s governing body, are likely to investigate the context and intent behind the gesture, according to the Daily Mail. Watch footage of the incident below:
A FIFA spokesperson reportedly said they are aware of the incident but declined to comment further.

Anti-Discrimination Group Slam Referee in Statement
In a statement released on Sunday night, the anti-discrimination Fare network, who challenge inequalities in football, said via The Athletic: “Advice from our experts is that the gesture used clearly resembles an upside down ‘OK’ hand symbol used as a ‘White power’ symbol in global far-right circles.
“Why is a VAR supervisor using this symbol at a global football event at the very moment he knows the cameras are on him? It can only be that he is intentionally transmitting a far-right neo-nazi symbol.
“We note that in the two subsequent games it appears TV directors have stopped introducing the VAR panel to the TV audience.
“A global television audience should not be subjected to extremist far right individuals using neo-Nazi symbols as they prepare to watch a match.
“Clearly this official should have no further role to play in this World Cup.”
While the hand gesture is characterised as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), it warns that “caution” must be taken regarding intent over the gesture’s meaning.
The ADL’s website says: “Because of the traditional meaning of the “okay” hand gesture, as well as other usages unrelated to white supremacy, particular care must be taken not to jump to conclusions about the intent behind someone who has used the gesture.”

Man Utd Preparing Bid to Sign Mateus Fernandes
Manchester United have been predicted to be the busiest Premier League club in the summer transfer window by journalist David Ornstein, and they are lining up a bid for their second signing after securing Ederson on a long-term deal.
With Man United already confirming the exit of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte likely to leave too, Red Devils chiefs have made transforming the club’s midfield their main transfer priority when the window officially opens today.
Ederson is seen as the first piece of the jigsaw puzzle, with the tenacious Brazilian offering traits that should complement Kobbie Mainoo in the centre.
United are far from done there when it comes to making changes to their engine room, with up to two more signings expected in the position should Ugarte seal an Old Trafford exit.
They have been linked with a whole host of midfielders in recent weeks, including Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, Lens’ Mamadou Sangare as well as many English-based players.
Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali have been mentioned, while they have also been reported to be looking at two Championship starts in Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough and Southampton’s Shea Charles.
It is another Premier League midfielder they are getting serious about though.
Sky Sports: Man United Preparing Mateus Fernandes Bid
While Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was considered as United’s number one midfield target for many weeks, the club is now said to have turned their attentions to signing West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes instead.
United’s bid to sign Anderson hit two huge hurdles early on, with the player preferring a move to Manchester City, as well as Forest’s huge asking price for the player.
City have already had a bid worth a total of £120m rejected by their Premier League rivals, who clearly mean business in their bid to keep the England international at the City Ground.
United are now focusing on Fernandes following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, and they are preparing a bid for a player valued at around £80m by the recently-relegated club, according to Sky Sports.

Imagine Mateus Fernandes and Bruno Together
If reports are to be believed, then Mateus Fernandes would love to play with Portuguese compatriot Bruno at Old Trafford, and the feeling is mutual.
The United captain is said to have recommended the 21-year-old to club chiefs too, and suggests they would already have a strong relationship on the field.
We know that Bruno is an assist king after he broke the Premier League record this season, and Fernandes can offer a lot in the number eight position given what we’ve seen from him for West Ham and Southampton previously.
Fernandes has shown that he is an all-round midfielder who has tenacity, but is also impressive technically too.
His ability on the ball and arriving late in the box is a great midfield habit to have, while one former head of analysis has lauded him for his ability to play ‘killer’ passes from deep in his own half.
The thought of the two linking up together is a mouthwatering prospect, and it could happen sooner rather than later.

Jake Paul Savaged Over Ilia Topuria Tweet After UFC Freedom 250
Jake Paul’s tweet after Ilia Topuria lost to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 didn’t go down as the social media superstar had hoped.
In one of the biggest upsets of the year, Gaethje stunned Topuria to become the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion in the main event of the landmark card at the White House.
Topuria was unbeaten in his previous 17 MMA contests as a professional and the adopted Spaniard entered the Octagon in Washington DC as a heavy favourite to defeat his American opponent.
Ilia had carved himself out a reputation as a vicious striker heading into the bout, but it was Gaethje who ended up finding most success on the feet, bloodying Topuria from an early stage of the contest.
The swelling around the eyes of ‘El Matador’ grew worse as the fight wore on. The ringside doctor was called in to assess Topuria’s eyesight at the end of the third round, although referee Marc Goddard made the decision to allow the battered fighter to continue.
At the end of the fourth, though, even Topuria’s corner accepted that their man couldn’t continue and pulled him out of the fight.
Jake Paul’s Controversial Tweet After Ilia Topuria’s UFC White House Defeat
Most gave Topuria credit for how hard he fought to try and keep hold of his undefeated record. However, Jake Paul took a very different view of the fight.
“Let’s go America,” gloated ‘The Problem Child. “Justin Gaethje is a beast,” he wrote.
“Lillia [Topuria] is such a hoe for quitting on his stool. Not even worth sparring that tiny boy,” Paul mockingly declared.
Paul has had a long-time rivalry with Topuria, frequently going back and forth with him on social media over the last year. However, if Jake was hoping to take a victory lap after Ilia’s defeat, fans in the comments section quickly put Paul in his place.
Fans Savage Jake Paul over Ilia Topuria Tweet
One fan noted: “You’d expect another fighter in a different organisation AND a different weight class would be a little bit more respectful towards someone who just went through an absolute war.”
A second agreed: “Ilia took more damage and showed more skill in one fight than you have in your whole ‘boxing career.'”
Others were quick to point out how badly Paul fared in his most recent fight, which saw him brutally knocked out by Anthony Joshua, sustaining a broken jaw in the process.
“Didn’t you get knocked out but also got that jaw broken?,” asked one reply rhetorically, with another chiming in: “Is your jaw recovered? The first time you fought a person around your age and weight, you got your face changed.”
Others accused Paul of not even watching the fight, given that it was Topuria’s corner, and not the fighter himself, that ended the bout.
“His corner are the ones that waved the flag. You don’t even watch the fight and say some dumb s***,” stated one reply.
“It was his corner, not him. He would’ve died out there,” wrote another.
Paul own fighting career is currently in major doubt, as his doctors have urged him to retire following the injuries he suffered against Joshua. Regardless of whether he ends up stepping back in the ring again, he may think twice before mocking a defeated fighter again after the reaction he received on Sunday night.

Japan Use Never-Seen-Before Tactic in 2-2 Draw vs Netherlands
Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu deployed a never-seen-before tactic to help his players secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on Sunday night.
One of the most eagerly-anticipated fixtures of the 2026 World Cup’s opening week didn’t disappoint. Virgil van Dijk gave Netherlands the lead early in the second half before Keito Nakamura equalised minutes later.
Crysencio Summerville put the Netherlands back in front in the 64th minute, but the Oranje were denied all three points when Daichi Kamada scored a dramatic late equaliser.
Asked if he had any regrets over his tactics, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman told reporters: “There was also a problem with pressure on the flanks. So if you look at the game, both goals, well, we didn’t defend well.
“Football is a funny game because, after Japan scored the second goal, they started defending as well.
“So we could have scored a third goal. So I don’t regret my choices.”

Japan’s Never-Seen-Before Tactic Goes Viral
However, it’s the unusual tactics of Moriyasu which have sparked plenty of debate on social media.
The 57-year-old, who has been in charge of the Japan national team since 2018, was seen holding a white board with giant numbers towards his players.
The numbers represented how many minutes were remaining. In stoppage time, Moriyasu flashed up a board with a minute-by-minute update, to ensure his players were acutely aware of when the full-time white was coming. Watch the footage below:
Asked about the tactic, former Australia and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said on ITV Sport: “Yeah I guess their timekeeping is good. Fantastic. I just wish they had something that said, ‘[be] brave’ and play more to their capabilities.
“They should be really happy with the 2-2. I know the capabilities they have. They can win these games by playing with a little bit more character.”
Manchester United legend Gary Neville, asked whether he adopted such methods during his ill-fated managerial spell with Valencia, added: “No, that wasn’t a tactic I deployed. When I saw a six board, that was the goals we conceded!”
