Man Utd Hold Talks to Sign Felix Nmecha

Published

on

Manchester United have held talks with intermediaries surrounding a potential deal to sign a midfielder, according to TeamTalk, as interest ramps up in players for the central ranks.

The Red Devils have placed plenty of focus on the midfield this summer, with a deal for Ederson already agreed and just waiting to be confirmed.

Beyond the Brazilian, Man United have also been pushing to sign Mateus Fernandes, with the West Ham star seemingly available after their relegation from the Premier League.

That could end up sealing the midfield for the coming season, but there is a chance that the Old Trafford outfit will add another player into the mix.

With that in mind, it seems as though there is another target for Michael Carrick now on the radar.

Recent links have emerged over Man United’s interest in Borussia Dortmund ace Felix Nmecha, who has been scouted by the club amid his impressive World Cup performances for Germany.

As that interest persists, TeamTalk reports that talks have been held between the club and intermediaries on behalf of the player, as he seems open to leaving the Bundesliga side this summer.

It’s a green light for the 25-year-old, but there is still the challenge of club-to-club talks ahead, if United persist with a move. Dortmund are seemingly under no pressure to sell, as there is a long-term contract on the table, as well as a £52 million release clause that isn’t available until next summer.

Carrick’s side aren’t the only team in the mix, as rivals Liverpool are there, as well as Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.

It remains to be seen whether an approach will be made this summer, but Nmecha, who has been described as the “most underrated midfielder in Europe”, is clearly attracting interest in what could be a huge battle to land his signature.

Man United Sales Needed

Michael Carrick

While there are plenty of talented players on the Man United shortlist, it’s clear that the recruitment team will need to consider sales on top of any possible incomings.

There will be a budget available, and it’s clear that at least two midfielders are part of that overall transfer spend available to the club this summer.

However, adding a third expensive addition like Nmecha means focus may need to quickly switch towards sales to raise the funds for such a signing.

Manchester United could tie up their second midfield deal soon

The first players to consider will be Manuel Ugarte and Marcus Rashford. Beyond that pair, moves for Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and others could raise the necessary money.

With a return to the Champions League coming up, Carrick will need all the support he can get in the squad to compete across all formats again.

Cristiano Ronaldo Sent Rio Ferdinand Angry Texts About Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi has all but wrapped up the debate when it comes to the greatest players in football history. After breaking the record to become the World Cup’s top goalscorer, the Argentine has just cemented his status at the very top further.

Following the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, the 39-year-old had virtually completed the sport. There’s very little for him to prove, but the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is proving he’s still the best on the biggest stage.

One man who would argue against Messi’s reputation as the best to ever grace a football pitch is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward has always been vocal in his opinion that no one is better than him. His messages to ex-teammate Rio Ferdinand suggest he doesn’t enjoy the comparisons, though.

Speaking at Euro 2020, Ferdinand explained what separated Ronaldo from the rest in terms of his mentality. “He was an obsessed human in terms of becoming the best,” he said of his old Manchester United colleague (per The Mirror).

The retired England defender then went on to wax lyrical about Ronaldo’s ability to play well beyond the age of 30, which is when others begin to slow down. He continued:

“After 30, we all sit in here, went down. He has gone on. Accelerated. Defies logic really.

“It’s down to commitment, a little bit of luck genetically as well. But he’s just a phenomenal football player, somebody who thinks of every little detail, aspect of the game to try to get every ounce of ability out of himself.”

“It’s not just about physically but mentally. His touches have gone down since he was a young kid in 2004, but obviously the touches in the box where he’s going to affect games have gone up,” Ferdinand concluded.

Gary Lineker was present on the show and Ferdinand explained how the ex-England striker managed to wind up Ronaldo. Lineker has always been vocal in his support of Messi in the debate between the two icons.

But the Man Utd legend wasn’t best pleased when hearing Lineker openly backing his long-term foe. He made sure to let Ferdinand know through some angry text messages.

“It’s a great example to young players and he uses negativity as fuel. You’ve [Gary Lineker] said some things like your preference would be Messi out of the two,” Ferdinand told Lineker.

Ronaldo uses the negativity to fuel his own performances, according to Ferdinand. He’ll certainly need to do that if he’s to catch up at the World Cup. Nonetheless, Rio added:

“He will send me a text saying ‘I can’t believe he said that, can’t believe he’s done that’. He just uses anything [as fuel].

“You think, he’s done so much in his life, ‘Why do you care about what anyone says about you. You know you’re the guy’. It’s the competitive nature. That’s all it is. And you need that.”

Lionel Messi’s Record-Breaking World Cup Goal ‘Should Not Have Stood’

Lionel Messi moved ahead of Miroslav Klose to become the highest-scoring player in World Cup history during Argentina’s 1-0 win over Austria.

The 39-year-old was given the opportunity to break the record from the penalty spot when Lautaro Martinez was fouled inside the area. However, Messi missed the 33rd spot-kick of his career, firing comfortably wide from 12 yards out.

It didn’t take him long to get over that miss, as the diminutive Inter Miami superstar struck with his left foot in the 38th minute. He swept the ball home after Argentina moved the ball from back to front in rapid fashion. But should it have counted?

Messi Told First Goal Should’ve Been Overturned

Messi is now the leading scorer in the competition’s long history, ahead of the likes of Klose, Ronaldo Nazario and Gerd Muller, with 18 strikes in total. His late second gave him breathing space ahead of his nearest competitor.

However, there is a belief that his first goal vs Austria – the record-breaking strike – should’ve been ruled out. According to Peter Schmeichel, at least.

The Manchester United icon was working on FOX Sport’s coverage of the game, and gave his thoughts at half-time. He believed the referee and VAR should have taken the goal away from Messi due to a foul by Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up.

“Think about how they get the penalty; this is a kick from behind through Xaver Schlager,” Schmeichel said. The retired goalkeeper then added that it was a ‘clear and obvious’ mistake, saying:

“This is a free-kick, Mac Allister has kicked the player down. That should have been a free-kick. VAR should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.”

Schmeichel even said: “And for that I feel a little bit frustrated.” Messi may have netted a second and broken the record anyway, but the slight doubt over the goal that pushed him ahead of Klose could annoy some.

Of course, Messi broke the goalscoring record, regardless of how Schmeichel or anyone else feels after netting a second goal. However, there is one statistic from the same game that the greatest footballer ever will want to forget as soon as possible.

After stepping up and missing his first-half penalty, Messi became the player to have missed the most from the spot in World Cup history. He’s been unmatched when it comes to finding the net, so it seems hard to believe that he struggles from 12 yards out. But Messi has now missed three penalties on football’s biggest stage.

Arsenal have now agreed a fee to secure a new signing ahead of Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners and United could be shopping in a similar market in the summer transfer window, with both sides competing in the Champions League next season.

Unfortunately for Manchester United, Arsenal could have an advantage if competing for signings after they lifted the Premier League title last campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side are one of the most attractive prospects in European football at the moment, with a number of players likely to dream of playing for the North London club.

United and Arsenal were both competing for one winger, but it now appears the Gunners have won the race.
