The Forum of Progressive Speakers of State Legislatures under the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the passage of the State Police Bill by the Senate, describing it as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen internal security and enhance community-based policing.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the forum, led by the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin.

He said the legislation represents a historic shift in the country’s security architecture and would empower states to respond more effectively to security challenges.

Dangyatin said the enactment of the bill was a victory for effective governance and grassroots security management.

According to him, the long-standing demand for a policing structure that understands local realities and peculiar security concerns has finally received legislative backing.

“The passage of this bill is a resounding victory for effective governance and community-focused policing. For years, the clamour for a security structure that understands the local terrain has been loud.

“With this enactment, we are empowering states to better protect their people, respond swiftly to security threats, and foster closer collaboration between citizens and law enforcement,” he said.

The forum pledged its full support for the successful implementation of the new law, assuring Nigerians that APC-controlled State Houses of Assembly would expedite the ratification process and establish legal frameworks suited to the security needs of their respective states.

It also promised to put in place effective oversight mechanisms to ensure that state police operations adhere to the principles of professionalism, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Furthermore, the forum said it would collaborate closely with state governments to guarantee adequate funding for the recruitment, training, equipment and welfare of state police personnel.

The speakers expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Assembly, the executive arm of government, and other stakeholders who contributed to the passage of the bill.

They expressed confidence that the introduction of state police would help curb crime, improve public safety and create an enabling environment for economic growth and development across the country.

Benue PDP disowns Emmanuel Agbo, affirms Aondoakaa as guber candidate

The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has distanced itself from Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, describing him as an impostor and political con artist over claims that he is the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

The party made the clarification following the circulation of what it described as a fake Certificate of Return allegedly paraded by Agbo on social media to support his claim of emerging as the PDP governorship flagbearer.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Secretary, Comrade Dan Nyikwagh, the PDP categorically stated that Agbo is neither its governorship candidate nor has he ever been recognized as such for the 2027 general elections.

The party said any publication, video, or statement presenting Agbo as its candidate amounts to impersonation and an attempt to mislead the public.

“Emmanuel Agbo is an imposter and a political con artist peddling and sponsoring fake news for selfish and mischievous reasons,” the statement said.

The PDP urged media organisations, social media users, and members of the public to disregard Agbo’s claims, insisting that they are false and fraudulent.

The party further stated that Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN) remains its duly affirmed governorship candidate for the 2027 election, having emerged through what it described as a transparent and unanimous consensus process endorsed by party leaders, stakeholders, and members and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the statement, Aondoakaa’s emergence reflects the collective decision of the party and enjoys widespread support across the state.

The PDP also warned that it would not tolerate actions capable of creating confusion within its ranks, adding that legal and constitutional measures have already been initiated against Agbo and others allegedly involved in impersonation.

“Impersonating a party candidate is a serious offence, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on anyone engaging in such criminal conduct,” the party stated.

It called on security agencies, the media, and residents of Benue State to remain vigilant and dismiss any narrative portraying Emmanuel Agbo as the PDP governorship candidate.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to what it described as rebuilding Benue State under the leadership of Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN.

2027: Nwifuru’s problem is Ebonyi people, not Wike — PDP

Gov. Nwifuru

By Luminous Jannamike

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday dismissed attempts by Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State to link his troubles to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, insisting that the governor’s real challenge is the people of Ebonyi State, not the FCT minister, as discontent over his administration grows ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The opposition party said the governor appeared to be searching for political scapegoats at a time when many residents were more concerned about the performance of his administration than political confrontations.

Speaking at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, accused Nwifuru of resorting to inflammatory statements and blackmail because of growing concerns about his political future.

“The truth is that Governor Nwifuru’s challenge is not Chief Wike; his challenge is the people of Ebonyi State, who are yearning for competent leadership and genuine development,” Mohammed said.

The PDP was reacting to comments allegedly made by the governor at a political rally, where he was reported to have threatened to ‘consume’ and destroy opposition figures in the state.

Describing the remarks as reckless and inflammatory, the party warned that such language could further raise tensions in Ebonyi State.

“We call on security agencies and civil society organisations to take serious note of the Governor’s disturbing remarks about ‘consuming’ opposition members and leaders in the state.

“Such language is unbecoming of a public office holder and has the potential to heighten political tensions in the state. Political disagreements must never be reduced to threats or rhetoric capable of endangering lives and undermining democratic participation,” Jungudo said.

Beyond the dispute with Wike, the PDP accused Governor Nwifuru of failing to deliver meaningful development and trying to deflect attention from his administration’s record.

It challenged him to account for key projects and programmes under his watch, including the reported N24 billion spent on renovating the Ebonyi Airport, which it claimed has yet to generate significant economic benefits for the state.

The party also raised concerns about the overseas scholarship programme, the state of basic education, uncompleted two-kilometre road projects across local government areas and funds budgeted for traditional rulers’ palaces.

“Instead of engaging in political blackmail, spreading unfounded allegations and threatening to deploy state resources against the opposition, the Governor should devote his energy to explaining to the people of Ebonyi State why, after more than three years in office, his administration struggles to point to projects that have meaningfully improved their lives,” the PDP stated.

Rejecting what it described as attempts to drag Wike into the dispute, the party maintained that the FCT minister had nothing to do with the governor’s current difficulties.

“Chief Wike is not Governor Nwifuru’s political peer and should not be drawn into the Governor’s self-inflicted challenges,” Jungudo said.

The PDP also signalled its readiness for the 2027 governorship election, naming Ambassador (Dr.) Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii as the candidate it believes can challenge the governor at the polls.

“If Governor Nwifuru is worried about the next election, he should direct his attention to the PDP governorship candidate, Ambassador (Dr.) Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, who will confront him at the ballot box.

“The 2027 election will not be about propaganda, intimidation or blackmail; it will be about performance, accountability and the welfare of the people of Ebonyi State,” Mohammed said.

The opposition party also raised concerns about the safety of its members and candidates in the state.

“Should anything untoward happen to any of our supporters, leaders or candidates in Ebonyi State, particularly our governorship candidate, Ambassador (Dr.) Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, or any member of his family, Nigerians already know where to direct their attention and demand answers.

“If the Governor truly wishes to ‘consume’ the people of Ebonyi State, let him do so through visible developmental projects, effective governance and tangible improvements in their living conditions through threats, intimidation and hostile political rhetoric,” Jungudi said.

Turaki bloc commends Nwifuru

Meanwhile, another bloc of the PDP took a markedly different position, backing Governor Nwifuru’s criticism of Wike and accusing the FCT minister of interfering in Ebonyi State affairs.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Interim National Working Committee of the party commended the governor for publicly challenging what it described as Wike’s alleged anti-party activities and political blackmail.

The bloc said Nwifuru had warned the minister against fuelling tensions in Ebonyi State through misinformation and the invocation of President Bola Tinubu’s name, while accusing him of meddling in affairs beyond his official jurisdiction.

“We are certain that Governor Nwifuru is conscious of the ignoble role Wike, then as the Governor of Rivers State, played in pushing his predecessor out of the PDP,” Ememobong said.

The group also cited allegations previously made by former Ebonyi State governor, Engr. David Umahi, against Wike, noting that the minister had yet to publicly respond to them.

Reaffirming its opposition credentials, the bloc insisted that the PDP could not be aligned with the ruling party and identified Mr. Eze Alexander as “the candidate of the authentic and uncompromised PDP” in Ebonyi State.

“We reiterate that the Peoples Democratic Party, as an opposition party, is not and cannot be in an alliance with the ruling party. We are a principled political party and will continue to insist on best practices in political contests in a bid to help achieve democratic consolidation in our country,” the statement added.

The group also urged Nigerians to support governors willing to resist what it described as attempts by Wike to ‘put fire’ in their states, underscoring the sharply contrasting positions taken by the two PDP factions over the minister’s role in opposition politics.

2027: Clan insists governorship seat remains in Ebonyi North

A socio-cultural organization in Ebonyi State, Ezza Ezekuna Development Association, EEDA, has declared that the governorship seat in the state must remain in Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone till the 2031 general election, for justice, fairness, equity and political stability.

EEDA dismissed the recent communique issued by a group describing itself as the Umuekumenyi Leaders’ Council, in support of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  candidate, Ifeanychukwuma Odii, from the Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone.

It declared that the Umuekumenyi Leaders’ Council has no legal existence as it is not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, and has no constitutional foundation within the constituent clans of Umuekumenyi.

Briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abakaliki, National President of the association, Chief Kingsley Akam, Secretary, Comrade Uchechukwu Edeh, and a member of the association, Professor Chike Emmanuel Onwe, said EEDA aligns itself with the established zoning arrangement governing political succession in the state.

It insisted that Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone must be allowed to complete its own two tenures of the governorship seat as done by other two senatorial zones in the state.

“The Ezza Ezekuna Development Association believes firmly in justice, fairness, equity and political stability. These are not abstract values to be invoked in ceremony and abandoned in practice.

“They are the operative principles upon which durable inter-communal harmony is built, and they have contributed significantly to the peace and progress enjoyed across Ebonyi State since its creation.

“We align ourselves fully with the established zoning arrangement governing political succession in Ebonyi State, and we do so not as a new or recent conversion but as an expression of a position that the leaders and people of Ezza Ezekuna have previously declared and consistently maintained.

“That position has never changed, and it shall not change. The governorship of Ebonyi State remains, in accordance with the prevailing zoning understanding, in Ebonyi North until 2031. No reasonable Ezza person, properly informed of the history of our state and properly committed to the collective stability of Ebonyi, would oppose this arrangement. Those who do so act neither on behalf of Ezza people nor in the interest of the peace that all our communities depend upon.

“The so-called Umuekumenyi Leaders’ Council has no legal existence. It is not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. It has no constitutional foundation within the traditions or governance structures of any of the constituent clans of Umuekumenyi.

“It is, in plain terms, a contraption — assembled hurriedly and without mandate by individuals pursuing personal political agendas under the cover of a name designed to create the illusion of collective authority. The public, the media and all relevant institutions are advised to treat it as such,” Akam said.
