Travel agent added woman as my wife in visa application – UK-based Nigerian tells court

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Emmanuel Opeyemi Makinde, has a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court that his travel agent, Mr Waliyu Aderibigbe Shitta, fraudulently added an unknown woman to his visa application in 2022 as his wife.

Opeyemi, while testifying in his evidence-in-chief before the court presided by Justice Ademuyiwa Oyeyipo, stated that the travel agent added one Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf, as his legally married wife without his knowledge.

He disclosed that the agent was introduced to him by his pastor, Mr Aregbesola Sanyanolu of Celestial Church of Christ, Jerusalem Parish, Ado-Ekiti.

Opeyemi further informed the court that your information provided by the agent later created serious problems for him with the UK authorities when he decided to bring his wife to the United Kingdom.

The travel agent, Shitta, is standing trial before the court for allegedly arranging a fraudulent marriage for Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf in order to facilitate her travel abroad, using Opeyemi’s identity.

Opeyemi told the court, “Throughout my dealings with the defendant, I consistently informed him (Shitta) that I was single for the purpose of my UK student visa application. After my wife completed her studies in 2024, I submitted an application for her to join me in the United Kingdom.

“One day while I was at work, I received an email from the UK Home Office requesting that I provide official evidence demonstrating that my partner’s previous marriage had been officially dissolved by the relevant court.

“I immediately sent a voice note to the defendant together with a screenshot of the Home Office email, explaining the consequences of the message I had received. After viewing the message, he blocked me on WhatsApp.

“I then contacted my pastor and informed him that we needed to report the defendant to the authorities. However, my pastor stopped responding to my messages and calls.

“Two days later, I replied to the Home Office and informed them that I had never been married to any woman other than my wife. The visa application was refused because the Home Office believed that I already had a marriage on record in the United Kingdom.”

Opeyemi also told the court that the agent instructed him to answer “yes” when he was asked during his biometric appointment whether all supporting documents had been uploaded.

He stressed that at no point did he instruct Shitta to include Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf as his wife in any visa application.

According to him, he consistently informed the defendant that he was applying for the visa alone and that there was no dependant on his application.

The matter was adjourned till October 7, 2026, for the continuation of Opeyemi’s evidence before the court.

Court orders arrest of police officer for allegedly evading arraignment

Justice Samira Bature of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, on Thursday ordered the arrest of a police officer, Edith Erhunmuuse, for allegedly evading arraignment in an ongoing criminal case.

The judge further directed all law enforcement agencies across the country to arrest Erhunmuuse wherever she may be found.

Justice Bature granted the application following a request by the prosecution counsel, Aderonke Imana.

Erhunmuuse is the third defendant in a charge marked FCT/HC/CR/222/2023, alongside Cecil Osakwe and Victor Giwa. The defendants are facing allegations of criminal conduct arising from the alleged forceful eviction of occupants and destruction of property valued at about N300 million.

At the resumed hearing, Imana informed the court that Erhunmuuse had again failed to appear despite an earlier bench warrant issued against her.

According to the prosecution, letters had previously been sent to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, while directives had also been issued by the Inspector-General of Police to ensure her appearance in court.

“Yet, the defendant failed to appear in spite of the directives of the Inspector-General of Police,” Imana told the court.

Citing Section 353 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, the prosecution urged the court to issue another warrant against the absent defendant.

Imana argued that Erhunmuuse had ignored court proceedings for over a year, while the other defendants had consistently attended proceedings.

Counsel to the first defendant, A.S. Usman, informed the court that efforts at amicable settlement discussed at the previous sitting were still ongoing. The second defendant, Victor Giwa, who appeared in person, aligned himself with the submission.

In her ruling, Justice Bature expressed dissatisfaction over the conduct of the third defendant, noting that the court could no longer tolerate further delays.

“The court is approaching its vacation time and cannot further delay the matter, including the order of arrest against the third defendant,” the judge said.

“The court hereby issues a bench warrant to all law enforcement agencies for the arrest of the third defendant, wherever she may be found, for showing disobedience and disrespect to this court,” Justice Bature ruled.

The order was made pursuant to Section 352 of the ACJA 2015.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until September 29 for continuation of trial, with the court warning that there would be no further excuses for non-appearance.
