The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old suspected bandit who was allegedly on his way to deliver ammunition and other items to bandits operating in the bush.

The arrest was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

According to the statement, the suspect, Mohammed Isah Haruna of Dan Dinshe Yamma Quarters in Dala Local Government Area, was arrested on Saturday at about 6 pm in Rimaye Village, Bichi Local Government Area.

The police said officers attached to the Bichi Division acted on credible information from a resident who reported seeing a man wearing what appeared to be a military uniform.

Working with members of the Rimawa community, the officers intercepted the suspect and searched his bag.

“During the search, the police recovered an AK-47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, 79 additional rounds of AK-47 ammunition, two sets of suspected military uniforms, three military caps, a suspected fake military identity card, a pair of desert boots, four ATM cards, and other personal identification documents,” the statement revealed.

According to the police, the suspect confessed during interrogation that he was in the area to deliver the recovered items to bandits hiding in the bush.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended members of the Rimawa community for promptly alerting the police, saying their action contributed to the success of the operation.

“This arrest underscores the importance of community partnership in policing. We appreciate the Rimawa Community and all good people of Kano for their support. Security is a collective responsibility,” Bakori said.

The police said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to identify and arrest other members of the suspected criminal network.

The command added that the case will be charged in court after investigations are completed.

It also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains vital in the fight against crime across the state.

A corpse being transported from Lokoja to Benue State for burial has been recovered by the Kogi State Police Command after suspected bandits attacked a funeral convoy and abducted several occupants along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway.

The deceased, identified as Augustine Ikwue, an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), died in Lokoja and was being conveyed to his hometown in Otukpo, Benue State, when armed men intercepted the Hummer bus carrying his remains on July 9, 2026.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said the deceased was being transported to his hometown when armed men intercepted the vehicle and forced the passengers into the bush.

Security operatives comprising the police, military personnel, members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and Community Policing teams, according to her, immediately launched a coordinated rescue operation after receiving a distress report.

Oyiza explained that the abandoned vehicle and the casket containing the corpse were successfully recovered, adding that the remains had since been deposited at the Elemona Mortuary in Ejule.

She added that the joint security team had intensified bush-combing operations in the Ugbakpedo and Ofejiji forests, while surveillance and patrols had been strengthened along major highways in the area.

Oyiza assured the public that efforts were ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing operations.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, has said that its Mining Marshals have arrested no fewer than 671 suspected illegal miners, with 397 already charged before the Federal High Court.
The corps also revealed that convictions have been secured as part of the federal government’s intensified crackdown on illegal mining.

The Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, made the disclosure on Monday while representing the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, at an event in Abuja.

According to him, the Mining Marshals, established by the federal government in 2024, have disrupted numerous illegal mining sites across the country, shut down illegal operations, seized mining equipment and restored several mining locations to their legitimate licence holders.

He attributed the arrests to the professionalism of the Mining Marshals, robust inter-agency collaboration and sustained support from the Federal Government.

Onoja revealed that the renewed enforcement efforts have significantly improved compliance with mining regulations and contributed to increased government revenue from the solid minerals sector.

He further called for dedicated budgetary support, deployment of surveillance technology, establishment of a national mining intelligence situation room and the designation of special Federal High Court judges to expedite the prosecution of illegal mining cases.
Quoting the Solid Minerals Development Fund, SMDF, he said revenue from the mining sector rose by 337 per cent between 2023 and 2026, increasing from about N6 billion in 2023 to over N70 billion by June 2026. He noted that the figures corroborate earlier reports crediting the federal government’s mining reforms for attracting investments and boosting earnings.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, called for practical solutions to illegal mining, insecurity and illicit financial flows while the Ad-hoc Committee Chairman on Mineral Exploitation, Security and Anti-Money Laundering at the House of Reps, Sanni Abdulraheem, called for more collaboration among security agencies, regulatory institutions, mining operators and host communities to end illegal mining.
