Benue court begins process towards trial of Al-Jazirah correspondent

Published

on

A Benue State High Court sitting in Makurdi has fixed October 22 for the pre-trial conference in the case involving Al-Jazirah newspaper correspondent in Benue, Henry Ibya.

Justice Shishi adjourned the matter on Wednesday after it emerged that not all documents filed by the defence had been received by the court, making it impossible to proceed with the scheduled hearing.

The judge subsequently directed the parties to regularise their filings ahead of the pre-trial conference.

Speaking with journalists after the sitting, one of Ibya’s defence lawyers, O.A. Alu explained that the pre-trial conference would enable both parties to identify and narrow the issues in dispute, resolve uncontested matters and prepare the case for substantive hearing.

The case arose from a petition reportedly filed by Terna Abuul, said to be the Director of ICT at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, over a publication allegedly authored by the journalist.

Following the petition, the police instituted criminal charges against Ibya, including alleged cyberstalking, before a Chief Magistrate Court in Makurdi.

The High Court’s latest ruling paves the way for the pre-trial stage before the commencement of the substantive hearing.

Ibya is also facing other legal proceedings arising from the same petition in different courts within the state.

A 500-level student of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Rebecca Kambai, has been killed in a hit-and-run accident along the Bauchi-Jos Road in Bauchi.

The 19-year-old died on Tuesday evening after a Sharon commercial bus allegedly rammed into the motorcycle she was riding near the Police Officers’ Mess before fleeing the scene.

A family source told DAILYPOST that the undergraduate had recently returned home for the holidays but realised she had left some personal belongings in school.

The source said Rebecca arranged for friends to send the items through a commercial driver travelling to Bauchi. When the driver arrived at the Bauchi motor park near Awala Hotel, he contacted her to collect the package.

Her brother reportedly took her to the park on a motorcycle. After collecting the items, they were heading home when the crash occurred.

According to the source, as they approached the Police Officers’ Mess and were about to turn into the New GRA area, the Sharon bus hit the motorcycle and sped off.

Rebecca was thrown onto the road and suffered severe head injuries, including a fractured skull. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while her brother sustained injuries.

A First Information Report obtained from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi Sector Command, showed that the crash occurred at about 5:15 pm on July 14, 2026, and was reported five minutes later.

The report stated that FRSC personnel arrived at the scene at about 5:30 p.m., recording a response time of 10 minutes.

It identified the motorcycle involved as a Jincheng motorcycle with registration number TFB-38-QB, used for private purposes.

The FRSC said two adults, a male and a female, were involved in the crash. The male sustained injuries, while the female was confirmed dead.

Items recovered from the scene included the motorcycle, a women’s hair stretcher and a pair of shoes.

The injured victim was evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for treatment, while Rebecca’s body was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

The driver of the Sharon bus reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash and had yet to be identified as of the time of filing this report. Efforts to trace and apprehend the suspect are ongoing.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the conviction of a 28-year-old man who was found guilty of advertising cannabis for sale on social media.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Kano Strategic Command’s Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the agency said the Federal High Court in Kano sentenced Ashiru Idris to seven years in prison without the option of a fine.

The statement said NDLEA officers arrested Idris on April 22, 2026, after a video circulated online showing him allegedly promoting cannabis for sale.

“On April 22, 2026, operatives of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN D.Y. Lawal, arrested one Ashiru Idris, 28, following the circulation on social media of a video showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale.”

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, convicted Idris and ordered that the seven-year prison sentence should take effect from July 14, 2026.

The agency described the judgment as a strong warning to people who publicly promote or engage in illegal drug activities.

Reacting to the ruling, the Kano State Commander, CN Lawal, said: “This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

The NDLEA urged families, community leaders, social media platforms and members of the public to support efforts to combat drug abuse by providing useful information to the agency.

75-year-old man bags 10 years for defiling 11-year-old girl in Rivers State

Rivers State Family Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced a 75-year-old man, Promise Chukwumatti, to ten years imprisonment without an option of fine for defiling an 11-year-old girl.

The court also ordered the convict to pay the sum of one million naira as compensation to the victim’s family and directed that his name be included in the Rivers State sex offenders’ register.

Chukwumatti was arraigned on a one-count charge of defilement of a minor.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, the trial judge, Justice Rita Oguguo, held that the prosecution had proven the charge beyond reasonable doubt through oral testimony, a confessional statement, and other evidence presented before the court.

According to the prosecution, Chukwumatti had carnal knowledge of the minor on several occasions in his apartment, after luring her with money while she was on her way to school.

The court upheld the position of the prosecution counsel, Chief State Counsel Precious Ordu of the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, that Chukwumatti indeed committed the offence against the child.

Justice Oguguo noted that although the convict pleaded for leniency, the law prescribes life imprisonment for such an offence.

She said the court, however, took into consideration the fact that his children are motherless before opting for a ten-year term without an option of fine.

Describing the convict as a disgrace to fatherhood, the judge also issued a restraining order barring him and members of his family from going near the victim’s family.

While counsel to the convict declined to comment on the verdict, Ordu welcomed the judgment, describing it as one that would “serve as a deterrent to persons who intend to engage in such crimes.”
