Following FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s failed attempt to privatise the World Cup, UEFA have shared a very strong statement.

The Swiss football administrator has faced huge criticism – including from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham when speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT – after trying to form a new commercial subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE). In short, the plan was to keep a majority stake of 51 per cent in major international competitions, such as the World Cup and the Club World Cup, but sell the rest to private investors.

In response to the news, UEFA planned to boycott the World Cup, while CONCACAF were among those to also reject the proposal. Infantino has now backed out of the plan, sparking new comments from UEFA.

UEFA Declare Loss of Confidence in FIFA President Infantino

In a statement shared via their official website, UEFA declared a loss of confidence in FIFA president Infantino. Slamming his scheme as a “shabby, back-room deal,” the full statement read:

“UEFA welcomes FIFA’s decision to withdraw its plan to sell a stake in its competitions – including the World Cup – into private hands.

“The proposal was unanimously rejected by UEFA’s national associations and by many other federations and confederations of all sizes around the world, whose job it is to protect football.

“UEFA thanks all the fans, leagues, clubs, players, individuals, associations and confederations that opposed the scheme, alongside the many Prime Ministers, Heads of State and commentators who have demonstrated to the FIFA President that football is not for sale.

“When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and the votes of FIFA’s Member Associations to elect him as their President in 2016, he said, “Of course we have to be transparent. I have been this in the last 15 years of my life in UEFA. You will have to play a part every day in the life of FIFA,” before telling the assembled stakeholders, “The money of FIFA is your money. It’s not the money of the FIFA President. It’s your money. You are the national associations and the money of FIFA has to serve for the development of football and not for anything else.”

“On both these promises, he has failed to deliver. The shabby, back room, opaque deal he hatched and tried to force through were anything but transparent.

“And with reserves standing at over $5bn, he has also failed to use associations’ money for the benefit of the game.

“UEFA will begin work immediately with partners and stakeholders all over the world and right across the game to propose a new way of distributing resources through the existing FIFA Forward programme.

“We must start to use some of that money that is sat idle in FIFA’s bank account to deliver the kick start that the grassroots and the wider game need in each of the 211 countries of FIFA. But we don’t need to sell off the family silver to pay for it.

“This is a victory for the whole game. But it must not be the end of the story. The proposal has gone. The task of rebuilding trust in FIFA has only just begun.”

Infantino’s Statement After Backtracking on World Cup Sale Scheme

With most of the footballing world united in their unhappiness with Infantino’s actions, the FIFA president was all but forced to abandon his plan to privatise the World Cup.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” Infantino said in a statement.

“Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed. Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support.”

Tottenham Hotspur will have to see off competition from Arsenal to land one of North America’s rising stars this summer.

It’s already been a busy transfer window for Spurs and they haven’t been afraid to splash the cash. Sandro Tonali has arrived from Newcastle United for £100 million and Mateus Fernandes joined him in North London for £85 million.

There are alternatives on the Lilywhites’ shortlist but the recruitment staff are also exploring the market with the long term in mind.

Tottenham Battle Arsenal For Camberos

Spurs have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Mexican starlet Hugo Camberos even though the 19-year-old has yet to play at senior level for Mexico’s national team. His stock is growing in his homeland amid impressive displays for Chivas scoring three goals and providing one assist in 35 games.

Mexican outlet TUDN reports that the North London rivals are tracking the teenager who is starring at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. It’s said his performances during the tournament have caught the attention of clubs, including the two Premier League giants.

The young winger’s father, Roberto Camberos, is keen for him to become a champion with Guadalajara before heading to Europe. Dubbed “very talented”, he still has two years on his contract, having risen through the youth ranks.

It’s a promising sign to see Tottenham plan for the future rather than solely focus on building a squad to compete next season. De Zerbi seems keen to trust in youth, having reportedly told Callum Olusesi he wants him to stay and be part of his plans.

Spurs may have to convince Camberos of a pathway to the first team given the growing interest in the Mexican youngster. The same promises weren’t made to Tynan Thompson, who joined Manchester United for £8m earlier this summer.

De Zerbi is also blocking youth duo Jun’ai Byfield and Luca Williams-Barnett from leaving and called upon the latter for the pre-season tour of Australia. The Italian undoubtedly needed marquee signings but that doesn’t mean he’ll be ignoring the exciting prospects in the club’s academy.

Crystal Palace are preparing for life without Maxence Lacroix following the French defender’s move to Chelsea.

New manager Pierre Sage has been given a tough ask to build on Palace’s UEFA Conference League triumph and will have to do so without Lacroix. He was hugely important throughout his time at Selhurst Park, winning three major trophies under former boss Oliver Glasner.

Lacroix joined the Blues in a £52 million deal earlier this week and becomes the latest high-profile name to depart Selhurst Park. The Eagles sold Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January and Eberechi Eze to Arsenal last summer.

Crystal Palace Want Disasi Loan Deal

Palace have made just one signing thus far, with Spanish defender Oscar Mingueza arriving as a free agent after leaving Celta Vigo. He isn’t viewed as Lacroix’s replacement, and it appears Steve Parish’s transfer chiefs are looking to capitalise on the business conducted with Chelsea.

According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, the South Londoners are interested in signing Axel Disasi on loan after his impressive performances at West Ham United during the second half of last season. The experienced Frenchman is deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and is likely to be on the move once again.

Palace are only keen on bringing Disasi to Selhurst Park on loan because they want to buy Reims’ teenage centre-back Raphael Le Guen. A senior defender is desired and the 28-year-old looks to be one of the favourites on their shortlist.

Disasi is thought to prefer a permanent move this summer but none of the offers thus far have appealed. He has three years left on his contract at Chelsea, having joined the Blues from AS Monaco in the summer of 2023 for £38.5 million.

Disasi Could Be a Good Fit For Sage

While Disasi failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, he proved his worth on loan at West Ham and previously Aston Villa. Labelled “unbelievable” despite failing to help the Hammers avoid relegation, he put in excellent displays in Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence.

The Frenchman’s experience could be hugely beneficial for Sage and help his compatriot try to take the team in a new direction. His versatility is also worth noting as he can play at right-back if required.

With Le Guen on the South London outfit’s radar, adding a centre-back who has spent years playing in the Premier League is a good idea. If he replicates the level of performances from his brief time at the London Stadium, it could lead to the club deciding to sign him permanently next year.
