Osun election, preview of what to expect in 2027 – Kabiru Ojo

Published

on

Political analyst Kabiru Ojo has described the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election as a warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ojo said the election had demonstrated that the power of the people remained stronger than the influence of political office holders, security agencies and other state institutions.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, re-elected for a second term.

Contesting on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who secured 444,815 votes.

Speaking on the outcome of the poll in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, Ojo commended INEC and, particularly, the people of Osun State for standing firm and resisting what he described as intimidation.

According to him, the development should give Nigerians hope that the 2027 election can be different if voters remain united and defend their votes.

He said the heavy presence of security personnel and political leaders in Osun before the election showed how important the poll was to the APC.

Ojo noted that about 16 serving APC governors and several senior security officers were deployed to the state.

He argued that the ruling party understood that the outcome of the election could have implications for the 2027 presidential election.

“What happened in Osun gives all Nigerians joy about how the 2027 presidential election will look. If Osun people can stand firm despite all the intimidation and difficulties, then Nigerians can also do the same in 2027,” he said.

The analyst said the election had also demonstrated that having governors, senators or other political office holders behind a candidate does not automatically guarantee electoral victory.

He added that voters must not only cast their ballots but also remain at polling units and follow the process until the final declaration of results.

“The masses have the power. The collective unity of the masses determines who will win the 2027 election,” Ojo said.

He also praised INEC for the conduct of the election, saying the acceptance of the result by defeated candidates was an important sign of what a credible election should look like.

Ojo said the willingness of the ADC candidate to accept defeat, including after losing his own polling unit, showed that political actors could accept the will of the electorate when the process was credible.

He urged Nigerians to learn from the Osun experience by remaining vigilant and protecting their votes in 2027.

According to him, the election had sent a message that Nigerians were increasingly willing to resist political and security intimidation when exercising their democratic rights.

“2027 is not about APC, ADC or any other political party. It is about the survival of Nigeria,” he said.

Ojo further predicted that the APC would face a difficult contest in 2027.

He argued that the economic hardship and policies of the present administration had created dissatisfaction among many Nigerians.

He said Nigerians would be looking for a leader capable of improving their living conditions and introducing policies that would bring relief to ordinary citizens.

“We need a leader who will have mercy on the masses and whose policies will bring succour to the people, not policies that will push Nigerians into abject poverty,” he said.

Ojo maintained that the Osun election had proved that political power ultimately belongs to the electorate, not political office holders.

I support APC’s decision to review Osun election – Oyebamiji

Published

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s governorship election in Osun, Bola Oyebamiji, has said the party had hoped for a different outcome in the election.

Oyebamiji said this in a statement he signed on Tuesday in Osogbo.

He, however, said the party respected the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and expressed his total support for the party’s decision to review the outcome of the election.

“Although we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review,” he said.

The APC candidate expressed appreciation to voters who supported his candidacy, as well as party leaders, members, volunteers and other supporters who worked throughout the campaign.

“I appreciate the many people who believed in and supported the alternative vision we articulated.

“I am deeply grateful to every voter who placed his or her trust in our vision,” he said.

Oyebamiji also commended volunteers who contributed their time and energy to the campaign, describing their commitment as something he would “forever cherish.”

“To the volunteers who gave their time and energy, and to our committed party members and leaders across the state who turned out to energise our campaign, I appreciate you all,” he stated.

He said the end of the election should not mark the end of the campaign’s ideals, urging his supporters to remain committed to the development of the state.

“The campaign has come to an end and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive.

“I urge my supporters to continue to contribute to the development of the state.

“We will continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun,” he said.

Oyebamiji also expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of hostility and violence against APC members and supporters following the election.

He said the alleged attacks had assumed a new dimension in the last 24 hours, urging the state government and security agencies to intervene.

“At the same time, I wish to alert the State Government and security agents to the growing trend of hostility and violence against our members and supporters.

“The violent attacks on our members witnessed in the build-up to the election have taken another dimension in the last 24 hours,” he said.

Oyebamiji consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further escalation.

“Once again, I thank every voter, supporter, party member and leader for your unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and support.

“I remain proud of the campaign we ran and grateful for the confidence you reposed in me,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC, in the early hours of Sunday, declared Adeleke the winner after polling 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 444,815 votes.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, who declared the results at the INEC collation centre, said the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, came a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, said the total valid votes cast were 985,079, while 20,721 votes were rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 1,005,800.

The Osun State Government has urged residents not to feel betrayed by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Speaking on Arise TV, Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the governor’s support for Tinubu was not a reaction to his recent election victory, noting that the endorsement had been made public long before the poll.
