Wrexham Next Manager: Huge Names Among 12 Favourites
The odds for Wrexham’s next manager have emerged after Phil Parkinson’s side were dumped out of the League Cup by rivals Cardiff City on Tuesday, with a surprise favourite already taking the top spot. Despite guiding the club to three successive promotions, Parkinson’s position could be under threat, as the northern Welsh side sit in the bottom half of the Championship table in 16th place with 14 points from their opening 12 games.
It may seem premature to make a decision about his future, given the leap from League One to England’s second tier – regarded as one of the best divisions in the world. But with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney providing a war chest over the summer – allowing him to bring in 13 players for a combined £33 million – expectations at the Racecourse Ground are high.
Now, with the managerial merry-go-round looming once more, the odds have been drawn up, according to Betfair. The current favourites are an intriguing mix, reflecting the fact that while Wrexham are still some way from establishing themselves among England’s top clubs, the global spotlight on them has already attracted some big names into the conversation.
Wrexham’s Next Manager Odds
Steve Cooper – 20/1
Steve Cooper is a manager on this list which has plenty of experience bossing in the English top flight, which is a division Wrexham hope to be in the coming seasons. In November 2024, the Welshman – born in Pontypridd – was sacked by Leicester City and was without work until Brondby IF in Denmark picked up his managerial services in September. The promotion hopefuls, however, could attempt to prise him away with odds of 20/1.
Tony Mowbray – 14/1
Former West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has a proven track record of success in the Championship, having won the league title in 2007/08. He also guided Sunderland back into the second tier as recently as 2022, setting them on the path to a Premier League return three years later. His more-than-impressive CV could be exactly what Wrexham’s eager owners are looking for in their pursuit of stability, though he is on the older end of spectrum.
Craig Bellamy – 12/1
At the time of writing, Cardiff-born Craig Bellamy has managed to bring a level of excitement to Wales with a 1.57 points per match rate in his 14-match managerial career. It’s the former Manchester City winger’s first job in management after working under Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht and Burnley and, as a result, whether Wrexham would be willing to take a punt on the 46-year-old, who has been given odds of 12/1, remains to be seen.
Gareth Southgate – 11/1
Another manager with experience in English football, like everyone else on this list, is Gareth Southgate. Having managed both Middlesbrough and the England national team, the 55-year-old has established himself as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football. However, since suffering a second successive defeat in the European Championship final last summer, he has been out of work. Wrexham will have to act quickly if they want him before Manchester United come calling, mind.
Ruud van Nistelrooy – 11/1
Ruud van Nistelrooy was the manager of Leicester in the 2024/2025 season but was sacked after relegation, having overseen a poor record of five wins and 19 defeats in 27 matches. During his tenure, the Foxes set a 141-year record for most consecutive home league defeats without getting on the scoresheet, with a total of 18 league games lost under his management by April 2025. Calling this one a gamble would be an understatement of the highest order.
Robert Page – 10/1
Currently in charge of Liverpool‘s U21s following a permanent 19-match stint at the helm of the Wales national team, it could take a lot of convincing to see Robert Page move back to his homeland to become Parkinson’s successor in the event he gets the sack. Despite having some of England’s brightest talents at his disposal, things haven’t gone swimmingly for the 51-year-old on the red half of Merseyside and a change of scenery could be on the cards.
Steven Gerrard – 9/1
The former Rangers and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is at 9/1, as he searches for his first job since his torrid stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq. Having never managed in the Championship before – a division his compatriot Frank Lampard has excelled in with Coventry City – now could be the perfect time to show he’s got what it takes to translate his leadership qualities during his playing career with Liverpool into a successful managerial career. Time will tell, of course.
Steve Bruce – 8/1
Throughout his playing career, Steve Bruce played for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United – and is fondly remembered for that header in 1993. His managerial career has seen him manage all over the country, from Aston Villa to Wigan Athletic to Crystal Palace. His longest stint came for Birmingham City between 2001 and 2008 and his most recent spell was for Blackpool City. Unemployed since this month, Bruce could welcome the chance to jump back into management.
Phil Jones – 15/2
At the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, Phil Jones began a coaching role, working with the Under-14 and Under-18 teams in United’s academy at Carrington. Having now been in that role for two full seasons, he could well be on the hunt for a bigger role, though it would seem somewhat counterproductive for the Wrexham hierarchy to take the punt on a first-time manager when they have such lofty ambitions and a fairly strong pulling power at their disposal. To bolster his chances, though, he was spotted sitting behind Ryan Reynold’s during their 3-1 loss against QPR.
Wayne Rooney – 5/1
Although he is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history, the same thing cannot be said about Wayne Rooney‘s career on the touchline. To date, the Liverpudlian has enjoyed stints in charge of Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City before taking on the challenge at Plymouth Argyle, which ended in December 2014. He’s not returned to management since and has been focusing on his punditry career; that said, managing Wrexham could entice him back into a former career.
Michael Carrick – 5/1
With Wrexham’s Hollywood owners showing no hesitation in bankrolling ambition, the prospect of a serious promotion push could be enough to tempt Michael Carrick into the Racecourse hot seat. Sacked by Middlesbrough and replaced by Rob Edwards in the summer of 2025, the 44-year-old is relatively experienced in the dugout – and his career includes a caretaker tenureship at Old Trafford in the 2021/22 season. He’d be attainable, too, given that he’s not in management at the time of writing.
Gary O’Neil – 3/1
The current favourite at 4/1 is former Bournemouth and Wolves manager Gary O’Neil. After a mixed season on the south coast, he was sacked before he joined Wolves in the summer of 2023. He finished 14th in his first season with Wolves, but was relieved of his duties once again in December 2024 with the club 19th and four points from safety. Having operated in the Premier League for most of his career, a slight step down could suit him, but his tactically adept nature would make him an impressive hire.

How Much Emma Raducanu Will Earn Despite Withdrawing Through Injury
British No.1 Emma Raducanu has secured a lucrative pay day despite pulling out of Wimbledon due to injury the day before the tournament was set to begin.
The 2021 US Open winner underwent scans on Sunday evening that revealed she has a stress fracture in her lower right leg. The 23-year-old had been managing an issue in the leg for some weeks now, including wearing a protective boot and missing training sessions in order to rest.
However, the tests confirmed Raducanu’s attempts to recover in time to play at the All England Club have proved unsuccessful.
Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon Earnings Revealed
Despite her withdrawal, Raducanu, who was seeded 30th, will collect half of her first-round prize money as this is guaranteed to her under the rules of the tournament.
All first-round participants earn £80,000, so Raducanu – currently 33rd in the WTA rankings – has secured a £40,000 pay day.
Boris Becker Names Greatest Female Tennis Player in History – Snubs Serena Williams
Not many people would snub the American when it comes to the GOAT of women’s tennis.
At a Wimbledon press conference, she said she had been dealing with a lower leg niggle that she had been managing since before Queen’s and the back end of the clay court season.
She said she had done everything possible to try and be fit for her home Grand Slam, but ultimately, this was not possible.
On Sunday, she had practised and earlier in the day told the media she was prepared to accept more risk to try and take part because it is Wimbledon.
Raducanu’s Wimbledon Withdrawal Statement
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly, I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon,” Raducanu confirmed on her Instagram.
“I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow, but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture.
“Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process.”
Raducanu had been scheduled to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic on Court 1 on Monday, but said she had been medically advised to not take part. Her replacement has been named as Latvian Darja Semenistaja. Ranked 112th in the world, she was the sixth seed in qualifying and lost in straight sets to Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova.
Elsewhere at the All England Club, Serena Williams will return to play singles for the first time in four years, 10 years after the most recent of her seven championship wins.
The total prize money for the championships in 2026 is £64,200,000, with the ladies’ and men’s singles champions each receiving £3,600,000. Total prize money has increased 20% on the prior year.

World Cup 2026 Set-Piece Goals
If the Premier League season was anything to go by, the slow, stylish build-up is out, and the no-nonsense Tony Pulis era of set pieces is back in. The art of the long throw-in has been rediscovered and corners now resemble Royal Rumbles.
But it is resulting in more set-piece goals than football fans have seen in previous years. And it is a trend that has carried over to the 2026 World Cup, especially with many of the Premier League’s set-piece advocates in attendance.
The World Cup is not only a stage for football’s biggest stars; it is often the site of David and Goliath-style giant killings. And when teams are pressed into their own halves, the set-piece can often provide a reprieve, as well as a great opportunity to turn the tide of the match.
But that is the fascinating state of the set-piece. It is no longer a symbol of low-brow football, now positively revived by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. And as the World Cup set-piece table shows, goals from corners and free kicks have come from both tournament favourites and unlikely underdogs in abundance.

Set-pieces have never been as important as they are now.
Three Goals
The philosophy of Total Football has helped the Netherlands to plan a pragmatic approach to their set pieces. But beyond the Dutch framework, Ronald Koeman’s squad are blessed with great physicality.
Virgil van Dijk was a threat from set pieces throughout the 2025-26 season for Liverpool, and he has continued that into the World Cup with one goal and one assist from corners. There’s also new Tottenham arrival Jan Paul van Hecke to worry about, towering over most at 6’2″. He also contributed a set-piece goal during the tournament.

As for host nation the United States, Mauricio Pochettino’s approach has mirrored that of the NFL. Dead ball specialists Sebastian Berhalter and Alex Freeman were selected to maximise success from set-pieces and the former Tottenham manager’s tactical approach has proved ingenious thus far. Both Berhalter and Freeman have been involved in all three of the United States’ set-piece goals.
Bosnia and Herzegovina have the joint-tallest squad at the World Cup, and they have taken great advantage of their height. Much like Arteta’s Arsenal, the Dragons have been inciting panic in the penalty box through overcrowding. This has twice resulted in Ermin Mahmic scoring from the second ball following failed clearances. Bosnia’s 6’4″ striker Jovo Lukic also climbed highest to head home his country’s first goal in their tournament opener against Canada.

England’s two set-piece goals are a warning shot to teams awaiting them in the knockout stages. Pinpoint delivery from Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka have emphasised that free kicks and corners will always provide opportunities for the Three Lions. And with the likes of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham waiting in the box, England are more than capable of shattering even the most stubborn of low blocks.
As good as they are overall, the answer to any question regarding defending champions Argentina often has one answer: Lionel Messi. The 39-year-old added to his all-time World Cup scoring lead with a late free kick against Jordan. However, he isn’t the only direct free-kick scorer for the Albiceleste in the tournament.

Former Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring against Jordan with his own free-kick goal, showing that set piece specialism runs deep in the Argentinian squad.
And host nation, Canada, will be a team to watch on set pieces, especially after the nature of their victory over South Africa in the Round of 32. It seems that captain Stephen Eustaquio is the player to watch in dead-ball scenarios.
The Canadian playmaker created five chances from set pieces during their match against South Africa, matching a World Cup knockout round record set by Italy legend Andrea Pirlo.
Eustaquio then provided the key moment, scoring a stoppage time winner from a set piece to put his country through to the Round of 16. If the Porto player continues to provide from dead balls, surely it will result in more joy for the host nation.
One Goal
There are currently 17 teams with one set-piece goal at the World Cup, including 2010 champions Spain.

Max Verstappen Mocks George Russell Over Team Radio During Austrian GP
Max Verstappen could not resist taking a cheeky dig at George Russell‘s controversial pole position this past weekend, joking over his team radio about yellow-flag speeding during the Austrian Grand Prix.
In a bizarre end to qualifying on Saturday, Russell was able to keep his pole lap after crossing the line under yellow flags.
Verstappen‘s qualifying came to an abrupt end on Saturday after he suddenly lost the rear of his RB22 at turn 9 and crashed into the barriers.
The Dutchman admitted afterwards he had no idea what triggered the spin, but the mystery was later solved when Red Bull discovered the rear wing had failed to close in time, robbing the car of crucial downforce and leaving him powerless to prevent the slide.
George Russell’s Controversial Pole at Austrian GP
Verstappen’s crash handed Russell a narrow window, with the Mercedes driver running right behind the Red Bull on track. Seeing only single yellow flags, the Brit lifted just enough to cross the line for pole position before the double yellows appeared.
His teammate, and championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, also passed the Red Bull under single yellows, but abandoned his flying lap after assuming the double yellows had already been deployed. The FIA reviewed Russell’s pole position before deciding that no further action would be taken.
Verstappen was shocked that the double yellows, which make any ongoing flying lap invalid, did not immediately appear, and could not resist making a tongue-in-cheek remark during Sunday’s race.
Max Verstappen’s Playful Joke About George Russell
During a conversation with his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, over the team radio, the four-time world champion made a joking reference to Russell’s controversial pole position after the yellow flags were used during the race.
Lambiase said to Verstappen: “Yellow in turn 10. Double yellow across the start/finish line. Yellow here, and double yellows.”
To which Verstappen responded: “That means flat out, right? Past the car? I’m joking!”
The 28-year-old’s P2 finish in Austria was his strongest result in a season which has so far seen Red Bull struggle, and after taking a disliking to the new regulations, Verstappen has even toyed with the idea of an early departure from F1.
He now sits seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, 98 points behind the leader Antonelli, while Red Bull lie fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Lewis Hamilton Makes His Feelings Clear After Max Verstappen Wanted Him Penalised During Austrian GP
Hamilton and Verstappen were going wheel-to-wheel during the Austrian Grand Prix, which led to the Dutchman asking his rival to be penalised.
When asked about his title chances, Verstappen replied: “Well, I think there are more races left than last year. But it’s a very big gap. I think for us, we have very good pace, but I think to fight for a title race we still have too many issues, if that’s from a start to just procedural issues in the background that even I think you guys don’t know about, but I know about.”
Verstappen heads to the British Grand Prix next, where he has won just once, in 2023, and last season started on pole before finishing P5.
