Best XI in the Champions League in 2025-26 Based on Stats

Published

on

With six games of the league phase down and two more to go, the Champions League table is starting to take shape. Numerous teams have risen to the occasion, but there have been a few surprises along the way too.

Right now, it’s Arsenal who are leading the way at the summit. The Gunners are indebted to the performances of multiple players in their squad, including Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli.

However, none of the trio feature in WhoScored’s Champions League Team of the Season so far, which is based on the average rating of players so far in the competition. In fact, no Arsenal players managed to make the cut, with players from other European giants — and a few smaller clubs —included in the ‘true’ best XI instead.

Goalkeeper and Defence

Currently, David Raya leads the way for clean sheets in the competition with five, underlining why he is widely considered to be one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. But the Spaniard is omitted from the team in favour of Bodo/Glimt’s Nikita Haikin. The Russian goalkeeper is averaging 6.3 saves per match so far and has prevented an incredible 4.41 goals, although his team are still languishing in 32nd place after drawing and losing three games apiece.

Newcastle have enjoyed a pretty decent campaign so far, picking up three wins out of six so far, and Eddie Howe’s squad have two defenders in the XI. Kieran Trippier, despite now being 35-years-old, is still a reliable figure for the Magpies when needed. His performances over 4 appearances help him grab the right-back spot, while fellow veteran Dan Burn lines up next to him at centre-back. The 33-year-old has started every game in the Champions League so far for the north-east club, even grabbing a goal against Athletic Club, their most recent win in the competition.

Despite boasting talented players across the board, including Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, only one Manchester City player makes it into WhoScored’s team, and it’s neither of the aforementioned players. Instead, Josko Gvardiol partners Burn at the heart of defence, thanks to the Croatian’s excellent performances so far over five games, with him averaging 1.6 tackles and 1.8 interceptions in the competition for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Completing the backline, in somewhat unsurprising fashion, is Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes. The Portuguese international was crucial to the French club’s triumph in the Champions League last season and has carried that form into 2025/26. While he’s resolute at the back, he’s a big threat going forward, notching two goals and two assists in six games thus far.

It always felt obvious that Michael Olise was going to thrive at Bayern Munich, and after an excellent debut year at the Allianz Arena, he’s kept his form going in his sophomore year. Featuring in every Champions League game so far, he’s created three goals and grabbed one himself in 514 minutes for the Bundesliga giants. Also creating four big chances, he’s been a huge reason why they have won every match bar one so far.

Moving into the middle of the pitch, Dominik Szoboszlai earns himself the first central-midfield spot with a rating of 7.7. There’s not been a lot to like about Liverpool so far this season, with them struggling on the domestic front — but things have gone slightly better on the European stage. Their Hungarian midfield maestro has been a shining light for them, with his three assists and three goals likely a factor in why the club want him to sign a new contract. And despite there being a vast array of midfield talent in the competition, such as Rice and Vitinha, Sporting Lisbon’s Trincao beats them all to the punch, having scored three times in five games.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been in fine form ever since moving to the Parc des Princes, and he completes both the midfield and a PSG-themed left flank. The Georgian international has been up to his usual tricks in the Champions League, helping his side to four wins out of a potential six while grabbing four goal contributions along the way.

As previously mentioned, there’s no room for Erling Haaland in this team, which might come as a shock considering that he’s notched six goals for Man City in as many games. But, with an average rating of 7.43, he falls way behind the two starting forwards in this team, who also happen to be the highest-rated players in the competition so far.

With Harry Kane now 32-years-old, you’d be forgiven if you expected him to slow down this season. But the England captain has been in frightening form, grabbing five goals for Bayern Munich in Europe, which make up just over 12% of his 40 goals for club and country so far this season.

Alongside him is quite possibly the best footballer in the world right now. After a slow start to life as a Real Madrid player, Kylian Mbappe has picked up the pace and really has taken off this season. Leading the way in the Champions League goalscoring charts right now with nine, the Frenchman is on track for a historic season with Los Blancos, provided that Xabi Alonso finds a way to turn their form around.

Kylian Mbappe Wearing Special Shirt Only 3 Players Have

Kylian Mbappe is lighting up the 2026 World Cup as he looks to fire France to their second success in world football’s biggest competition since 2018.

The Real Madrid forward is firmly in the Golden Boot race against the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior, having found the net four times in the group stages. Mbappe was crucial to his nation lifting the trophy in 2018, bursting onto the scene as a teenager.

He then had an incredible tournament four years later in Qatar. Despite his side having to settle for second place, the 27-year-old fired in a hat-trick in the final, something only Sir Geoff Hurst has previously managed.

That treble in the final against Argentina helped Mbappe to the Golden Boot in the 2022 World Cup. The versatile forward netted eight times in total, and was undeserving of being on the losing side.

He tends to step up on the big stage when his country needs him. Some eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a difference in the shirt Mbappe is wearing this summer compared to the rest of Didier Deschamps’ men.

2026 World Cup Golden Boot: 17 Top Goalscorers Predicted By AI

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are all expected to finish among the top goalscorers in this summer’s tournament.

The reason for that is his Golden Boot victory in 2022. Any active player who has won the individual award at the World Cup is allowed to wear a special patch on the sleeve of their shirt.

England’s Harry Kane and Colombia’s James Rodriguez are the only other players at the tournament this summer allowed to wear the patch, after winning the 2018 and 2014 Golden Boots, respectively.

The award has never been won back-to-back in the competition’s history. But with France being among the strong favourites and expected to go far, there’s every chance their talisman can scoop the honour once again. After all, he’s only four goals away from being the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

Mbappe: Lionel Messi Still the Best

While Mbappe is hunting his old Paris Saint-Germain teammate Lionel Messi down in the current Golden Boot race and the all-time scoring charts, he still concedes he has a lot to do to overtake the Argentine.

It was no surprise to Les Bleus’ number nine that Messi has continued to deliver on the big stage. He said (per ESPN): “I already knew Messi was going to keep scoring goals. He always does. He’s ahead of me and I’m behind him. I’ll keep scoring to help my national team go as far as possible.”

Messi smashed Klose’s tally on Monday evening…

Following the greatest footballer of all time smashed a hat-trick against Algeria, Mbappe declared him still the best in the world. He claimed:

“It’s clear that Messi is the best in the world, and so is Cristiano [Ronaldo]. For 16 years, he [Messi] has shown his extraordinary talent. I’m just trying to do what I know how to do: show my talent on the biggest stage possible and help my national team.”

Newcastle Now Want Felix Nmecha

Published

Newcastle United have lined up a deal to sign a midfielder this summer, as the Magpies face the possibility of losing some key players in the coming weeks.

The Magpies are under pressure to keep their best stars, with Sandro Tonali being heavily linked with a move to the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

The Italian international isn’t the only possible exit, as Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a transfer elsewhere, as Arsenal have made an offer to sign the Brazilian.

A deal for the former seems the most likely, meaning Newcastle are on the market for replacements, and one target is now seemingly in the club’s sights.

Newcastle Add Felix Nmecha To Shortlist

nmecha dortmund

According to a report from journalist Craig Hope, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha is on Newcastle’s shortlist as a transfer target for this summer.

The Magpies are described as “long-term admirers” of the 25-year-old, who has impressed in the Bundesliga as well as in the World Cup with Germany in recent weeks.

Nmecha has a release clause in his deal worth £73.5 million, though that doesn’t come into effect until next summer. That said, the report claims that there is hope a move can be negotiated for lower than that price.

There is likely to be some competition for Nmecha’s signature, as Manchester United have been linked with a transfer, along with fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can get an agreement with both Dortmund and the Germany international over a potential transfer in the coming weeks as a result.

But it could prove to be a coup for the side, with Nmecha described as the “most underrated midfielder in Europe” for good reason.

Newcastle’s Key Transfer Decisions

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe looks on glumly

Newcastle are facing a tough summer transfer window, with Anthony Gordon’s exit set to be just the first of a few key moves away from the club.

Given the struggles in the Premier League last season, the Magpies will be keen to not be in a weaker position next campaign when it comes to the options available.

However, it may be the sales that help ensure that is the case. Selling some important players in favour of huge transfer fees could allow it to be reinvested in a way that will add a better balance of quality across the whole squad.

Newcastle Make New Transfer Plan as £69m Star Set To Leave

Newcastle United are in the market for a striker, as one star looks set to leave the club this summer.

That, in theory, should allow the team to become stronger. But that will only happen if the right transfer replacements are found for the right price.

That was the theory in practice last summer, with Alexander Isak’s sale generating a club-record fee, but resulting in the wrong options being signed to take his place.

Newcastle cannot allow a repeat of that, especially in the midfield engine room, which has been among the key areas of strength under Howe.
