4/10 Sancho Stinks – Basel 1-2 Aston Villa: Player Ratings and Match Highlights

Published

on

Aston Villa defeated Basel 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

It took the in-form Premier League side just 12 minutes to take the lead, and it was Evann Guessand who opened the scoring with a well taken finish after a scrappy corner. Basel thought they had equalised in the first half through Leroy, but it was disallowed for offside.

That scare for Villa did not act as a wake-up call, as just six minutes later, the Swiss side had the ball in the back of the net again. Xherdan Shaqiri whipped an excellent ball into Villa’s penalty area, and although Bizot came charging out of his goal, Flavius Daniliuc got to the ball first and knocked it past the Dutch goalkeeper to level the match up at 1-1.

Eight minutes into the second half, Villa regained their lead through substitute Youri Tielemans, who placed a beautiful finish into the bottom corner from just outside Basel’s penalty area. The rest of the second half was fairly quiet, and Tielemans’ strike ended up being the last significant moment of the match, and Villa saw the match out to secure all three points in Switzerland.

Basel Player Ratings

Flavius Daniliuc celebrating after scoring for Basel against Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League

GK: Marwin Hitz – 6/10

Made a few important saves in the first half, but arguably could’ve done more to stop Guessand’s opening goal, as the strike didn’t really have much pace on it.

RB: Keigo Tsunemoto – 7/10

Did very well defensively up against Sancho and managed to keep him from having any impact. Despite being defensively excellent, Tsunemoto didn’t offer much going forward.

CB: Jonas Adjei Adjetey – 7/10

Dealt with the threat of Malen very well and also managed to produce some important clearances. As well as dealing with Malen, Adjetey also helped Tsunemoto keep Sancho out of the match.

CB: Flavius Daniliuc – 8/10

Very good when playing the ball out from the back, and also managed to get on the scoresheet. The Austrian showed real desire to get on the end of Shaqiri’s cross and never really put a foot wrong defensively.

LB: Dominik Schmid – 6/10

Outside of putting a few decent crosses into Villa’s penalty area, Schmid didn’t have that much impact on the match. The left back also had some shaky moments, especially in one-on-one situations against Guessand.

CM: Metinho – 7/10

A solid and calm midfield performance. Metinho put in some good tackles throughout the match and never really put a foot wrong in possession of the ball.

CM: Andrej Bacanin – 6/10

Worked very hard and pressed well in the midfield, but had very little to do in possession of the ball.

CM: Leo Leroy – 7.5/10

Probably Basel’s brightest player. Leroy was unlucky to have had his fantastic strike ruled out due to an offside and was always looking to make things happen in the final third.

RW: Benie Traore – 5.5/10

Very energetic up and down the right flank, but had little impact in the final third.

ST: Xherdan Shaqiri – 7.5/10

Provided a very good assist for Daniliuc’s equaliser in the 34th minute. Outside of his assist, the 34-year-old didn’t really have that much involvement in the match and didn’t register a single shot on goal.

LW: Philip Otele – 7/10

Worked incredibly hard all throughout the match. The Nigerian threatened the Villa back line a few times with his pace and power, but he didn’t get the clear-cut opportunities in front of goal.

Aston Villa Player Ratings

Aston Villa players before their UEFA Europa League tie against Basel

GK: Marco Bizot – 5/10

Had just a few routine saves to make during the match. The Dutchman was arguably at fault for Basel’s goal, as he came rushing out of his goal, but never got to the ball.

RB: Matty Cash – 6.5/10

Put in a solid first-half showing, but was taken off at half-time. The Polish international was shown a yellow card quite early in the match, so that could’ve been the reason behind his withdrawal.

CB: Ezri Konsa – 7.5/10

Good when playing the ball out from the back and produced some important defensive actions at key times of the match.

CB: Victor Nilsson Lindelof – 7.5/10

Saw more of the ball than any other player on the pitch, and he never put a foot wrong with it. Lindelof didn’t have much defending to do, but he stayed organised and made Villa hard to break down.

LB: Lucas Digne – 7/10

Did very well defensively up against Traore and also managed to cause some problems in the final third, especially with his crosses into Basel’s box.

CM: Lamare Bogarde – 7.5/10

Really effective in possession of the ball and a really energetic presence in the midfield.

CM: Amadou Onana – 7/10

Never put a foot wrong in possession of the ball, and was a really solid, hard-working physical presence in the middle of the park.

AM: Emiliano Buendia – 7.5/10

Provided a simple but tidy assist for Tielemans’ second-half strike. Buendia had several bright moments with the ball at his feet in the final third, but seemed to struggle with the intensity of the match at times.

RW: Evann Guessand – 8/10

Took his goal well, even though it looked like it was a scuffed strike. Guessand looked to make things happen every time he picked up the ball and was a nightmare for Schmid to defend against at times.

ST: Donyell Malen – 5.5/10

Despite having enjoyed a very good Europa League campaign so far, Malen was pretty ineffective against Basel. He didn’t look his typical pacy and sharp self and was dealt with quite easily by the opposition’s defence.

LW: Jadon Sancho – 4/10

A pretty ineffective performance from the Englishman. Sancho was visibly frustrated after Emery took him off in the second half, and he was likely feeling that way due to his underwhelming performance. The loanee saw quite a bit of the ball in wide areas but was quite easily dealt with by the Basel defenders.

SUB: Youri Tielemans – 8.5/10 (Man of the Match)

Game changer. As soon as Tielemans came on, Villa looked a much better and more composed team. The Belgian controlled the midfield and also managed to score a picture-perfect goal.

SUB: Boubacar Kamara – N/A

Kylian Mbappe Wearing Special Shirt Only 3 Players Have

Kylian Mbappe is lighting up the 2026 World Cup as he looks to fire France to their second success in world football’s biggest competition since 2018.

The Real Madrid forward is firmly in the Golden Boot race against the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior, having found the net four times in the group stages. Mbappe was crucial to his nation lifting the trophy in 2018, bursting onto the scene as a teenager.

He then had an incredible tournament four years later in Qatar. Despite his side having to settle for second place, the 27-year-old fired in a hat-trick in the final, something only Sir Geoff Hurst has previously managed.

That treble in the final against Argentina helped Mbappe to the Golden Boot in the 2022 World Cup. The versatile forward netted eight times in total, and was undeserving of being on the losing side.

He tends to step up on the big stage when his country needs him. Some eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a difference in the shirt Mbappe is wearing this summer compared to the rest of Didier Deschamps’ men.

2026 World Cup Golden Boot: 17 Top Goalscorers Predicted By AI

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are all expected to finish among the top goalscorers in this summer’s tournament.

The reason for that is his Golden Boot victory in 2022. Any active player who has won the individual award at the World Cup is allowed to wear a special patch on the sleeve of their shirt.

England’s Harry Kane and Colombia’s James Rodriguez are the only other players at the tournament this summer allowed to wear the patch, after winning the 2018 and 2014 Golden Boots, respectively.

The award has never been won back-to-back in the competition’s history. But with France being among the strong favourites and expected to go far, there’s every chance their talisman can scoop the honour once again. After all, he’s only four goals away from being the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

Mbappe: Lionel Messi Still the Best

While Mbappe is hunting his old Paris Saint-Germain teammate Lionel Messi down in the current Golden Boot race and the all-time scoring charts, he still concedes he has a lot to do to overtake the Argentine.

It was no surprise to Les Bleus’ number nine that Messi has continued to deliver on the big stage. He said (per ESPN): “I already knew Messi was going to keep scoring goals. He always does. He’s ahead of me and I’m behind him. I’ll keep scoring to help my national team go as far as possible.”

What Miroslav Klose Said About Lionel Messi Breaking His World Cup Goalscoring Record

Messi smashed Klose’s tally on Monday evening…

Following the greatest footballer of all time smashed a hat-trick against Algeria, Mbappe declared him still the best in the world. He claimed:

“It’s clear that Messi is the best in the world, and so is Cristiano [Ronaldo]. For 16 years, he [Messi] has shown his extraordinary talent. I’m just trying to do what I know how to do: show my talent on the biggest stage possible and help my national team.”

Newcastle Now Want Felix Nmecha

Published

Newcastle United have lined up a deal to sign a midfielder this summer, as the Magpies face the possibility of losing some key players in the coming weeks.

The Magpies are under pressure to keep their best stars, with Sandro Tonali being heavily linked with a move to the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

The Italian international isn’t the only possible exit, as Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a transfer elsewhere, as Arsenal have made an offer to sign the Brazilian.

A deal for the former seems the most likely, meaning Newcastle are on the market for replacements, and one target is now seemingly in the club’s sights.

Newcastle Add Felix Nmecha To Shortlist

According to a report from journalist Craig Hope, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha is on Newcastle’s shortlist as a transfer target for this summer.

The Magpies are described as “long-term admirers” of the 25-year-old, who has impressed in the Bundesliga as well as in the World Cup with Germany in recent weeks.

Nmecha has a release clause in his deal worth £73.5 million, though that doesn’t come into effect until next summer. That said, the report claims that there is hope a move can be negotiated for lower than that price.

There is likely to be some competition for Nmecha’s signature, as Manchester United have been linked with a transfer, along with fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can get an agreement with both Dortmund and the Germany international over a potential transfer in the coming weeks as a result.

But it could prove to be a coup for the side, with Nmecha described as the “most underrated midfielder in Europe” for good reason.

Newcastle’s Key Transfer Decisions

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe looks on glumly

Newcastle are facing a tough summer transfer window, with Anthony Gordon’s exit set to be just the first of a few key moves away from the club.

Given the struggles in the Premier League last season, the Magpies will be keen to not be in a weaker position next campaign when it comes to the options available.

However, it may be the sales that help ensure that is the case. Selling some important players in favour of huge transfer fees could allow it to be reinvested in a way that will add a better balance of quality across the whole squad.

Newcastle Make New Transfer Plan as £69m Star Set To Leave

Newcastle United are in the market for a striker, as one star looks set to leave the club this summer.

That, in theory, should allow the team to become stronger. But that will only happen if the right transfer replacements are found for the right price.

That was the theory in practice last summer, with Alexander Isak’s sale generating a club-record fee, but resulting in the wrong options being signed to take his place.

Newcastle cannot allow a repeat of that, especially in the midfield engine room, which has been among the key areas of strength under Howe.
