Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has condemned the invasion of Zurin Mahauta village in Lakwaya town, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, describing the attack as unacceptable and calling for swift action against those responsible.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, @barauijibrin, the lawmaker said the attack happened on Sunday night and was carried out by armed criminals.

“Last night’s invasion of Zurin Mahauta village in Lakwaya town in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State by marauding gunmen is condemnable, and these criminals must be dealt with forthwith,” Barau said.

He added that information from residents suggested the attackers came from outside Kano State.

“My constituents told me that the criminal elements from neighbouring states stormed the village last night,” he stated.

Barau, however, confirmed that security operatives have made progress in rescuing some of the victims abducted during the attack.

“The good news, however, is that the security operatives have rescued three out of the five persons kidnapped,” he said.

He also cited an earlier media report to back the rescue effort. According to him, “In an online publication around 3 p.m. on Monday, Daily Trust quoted Captain Babatunde Zubairu, an Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, as saying, ‘three persons have so far been rescued.’”

The senator praised the security agencies for their swift response and urged them to continue efforts to rescue the remaining victims.

“I commend the security operatives for swiftly rescuing the three persons and urge them not to relent in securing the remaining two persons,” he said.

Barau expressed concern that the attack came after weeks of relative peace in the area, stressing that such incidents must not be allowed to continue.

“This unfortunate incursion must be the last in the series of attacks on our peace-loving people. For weeks, there have been no attacks in our area until last night,” he noted.

He appealed to security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protection in the affected communities.

“In this regard, I appeal to our gallant security operatives to redouble their efforts in fortifying the areas and remain vigilant in tackling these marauding criminal elements,” Barau said.

Reaffirming his commitment to public safety, the lawmaker added, “The security of our people’s lives and properties is paramount. I will continue to support the security agencies in performing their duties.”

NDC: Nigerians seeing Tinubu’s true colours – Atiku

Published

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, says Nigerians are now seeing the true colours of president Bola Tinubu.

Atiku said this in a statement on Saturday in reaction to the court’s judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, as a political party.

He accused Tinubu of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy through a plot to deregister the NDC, warning that such a move could pave the way for a one-party state.

The former Vice President described the  attempt to deregister the opposition party through judicial means as evidence of what he called the administration’s determination to weaken political opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.

He said any effort to restrict political competition or limit citizens’ choices at the ballot box poses a serious threat to democratic governance and national stability.

According to him, the development did not come as a surprise, arguing that recent actions and political signals from the current administration have raised concerns about its commitment to democratic principles.

“Nigerians are now seeing the true colours of President Tinubu, who pretends to be a democrat, but his body language and the sinister activities of his agents contradict his mouthed commitment to free and fair elections,” he said.
