APC driving Nigeria to one-party state – Babangida Aliyu
Former Niger State Governor and Chairman of the Former Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu, has raised alarm over what he described as Nigeria’s dangerous drift towards a one-party state under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at an interactive session between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the Former Ministers’ Forum, Aliyu expressed deep concern about shrinking political space, induced defections, and the weakening of opposition institutions.
“We observe with alarm the aggressive maneuvers by the ruling APC to obliterate the opposition. The relentless poaching of opposition figures and the weaponization of state institutions to intimidate dissenting voices are clear indicators that Nigeria is sliding dangerously into a one-party state,” he said.
Aliyu emphasized that a vibrant opposition is essential for a thriving democracy and congratulated the newly elected PDP National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, expressing full confidence in their leadership.
“The PDP is not dead; it is evolving,” Aliyu stated, praising Turaki’s efforts to reposition the party with renewed purpose, discipline, and reconciliation.
Responding, PDP National Chairman Turaki highlighted the party’s 16-year governance legacy, describing it as a benchmark for national development and a period of economic growth, debt clearance, and middle-class expansion.
Turaki cited key achievements including the liberalization of the telecoms sector, banking consolidation, settlement of the Paris Club debt, and the establishment of agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC to fight corruption.
Also addressing the meeting, former Kano State Governor and former Minister Ibrahim Shekarau urged the new NWC to remain steadfast, declaring: “Don’t relent; you have done more than expected.”
The forum’s endorsement of the PDP’s new leadership signals a commitment to strengthening the party’s role in Nigeria’s democracy amid rising concerns about political centralization under the APC.

NDC: Every action behind deregistration ruling embarrassing – Dickson
The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Seriake Dickson, has described as frivolous and embarrassing every action behind the party’s deregistration ruling.
Dickson made this remark during an interview on ‘Sunday Politics’, a programme on Channels Television.
He was speaking on the judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja which set aside its earlier ruling directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to register the NDC as a political party.
He said that the NDC remains a registered political party, noting that the ruling did not contain any mandatory order directing INEC to deregister the party
“Every action behind deregistration ruling is frivolous and embarrassing. Right now, the NDC remains a registered political party.
“What people are trying to do is to look for flimsy excuses to truncate the political opposition, destabilise, weaken and scatter the political opposition,” he said.

Certified True Copy of court judgement deregistering NDC emerges [PHOTOS]
The Certified True Copy of the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has emerged.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Isa H. Dashen at the Lokoja Judicial Division, effectively sets aside a December 10, 2025 judgment that had previously compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the party.
The court said the prior judgment was nullified because it affected the legal rights of the Peace Movement Party, which claimed ownership of the logo used by the NDC but was never joined as a party to the original lawsuit.
Recall that the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, on Saturday said that the commission was waiting to obtain the official paperwork before finalizing its response.
“We have applied for the Certified True Copy of the judgment. Until we receive it, we cannot be in a position to comment on it. However, the position that existed before the December 10, 2025 judgment was that INEC rejected NDC’s letter of intent to be registered as a political party,” Haruna explained.
The NDC had said that it has already been denied the portal access codes needed to upload its candidate list for the 2027 general elections.
In response to the portal denial, the National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director, confirmed that their efforts to secure the necessary credentials were unsuccessful.
“We approached INEC to collect the access code to upload the names of our candidates to the INEC portal. They told us that they will get back to us,” Director said.

APC dismisses purported primary results on social media as fake
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected reports announcing the outcome of its primaries, describing them as fake.
In a public notice issued on Sunday, the party said it had not released any official list of winners from the primaries and warned members and the general public against relying on unauthorised publications.
The disclaimer, signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, was shared on the party’s official X account.
“The public is therefore advised to disregard any publication or report purporting to announce the outcome of the primaries, as such information is false and unauthorised,” the statement read.
The party explained that successful aspirants would be officially informed through its recognised communication channels before being issued Certificates of Return. It also urged its members, stakeholders, and the general public to rely solely on official APC communications for updates regarding the outcome of its primary elections.
