Eden Hazard Already Picks Kylian Mbappe as Winner

Published

on

The new year isn’t even one month old yet, but that hasn’t stopped former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Eden Hazard from picking his 2026 Ballon d’Or winner.

Ousmane Dembele lifted the biggest individual prize in world football just three months ago, but Hazard doesn’t believe the Frenchman will be awarded the Golden Ball this time around. Instead, he thinks one of Dembele’s teammates will scoop the honour.

There is a lot of football still to be played and the 2026 World Cup will likely play a part in the selection of the Ballon d’Or winner. Team success has often played a role in recent years and league titles, European trophies and international prizes are still on offer for the world’s best players.

Hazard has piled the pressure on current Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe, who he thinks will succeed his France teammate Dembele. The 27-year-old has often been in the running for the prestigious award but has yet to get his hands on the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking to French publication Telefoot (per OneFootball), the retired Belgian winger was adamant Mbappe would win this time around. He said:

“He set the bar very high at the start of the season. Could Mbappe win the Ballon d’Or? I think he will. He’ll need to win the Champions League, La Liga, and go deep in the World Cup. But I have no doubts about him: the Ballon d’Or, he’ll get it.”

Hazard, who finished 8th place in 2015 and 2018, thinks the Bernabeu talisman has what it takes to guide his club and country to great success. That’s despite the chaos surrounding Real Madrid for large parts of the campaign so far.

Los Blancos’ No.9 has been in wonderful goalscoring form this term, netting 34 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. His team haven’t been in great shape for the entire season, as shown by Xabi Alonso’s recent sacking, but Mbappe’s consistency in front of goal hasn’t dropped in the slightest.

During his early days at AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, it was expected that the versatile forward would take over from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and dominate world football. That’s not quite been the case as Mbappe’s best finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings is third (2021).

Even after starring as a teenager during France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, the rapid attacker only finished fourth. Hazard thinks that is about to change this year, already tipping Mbappe to scoop the award a whopping nine months before we will find out. He’s already one of the favourites, along with Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane.

Unai Emery Green Lights Aston Villa Bid for Jon Martin

Aston Villa are ready to add an elite central defender to their squad this summer after Unai Emery gave his green light to an opening bid, according to Sports Boom.

The Villans are preparing to return to the Champions League next season after winning the Europa League and finishing fourth in the Premier League this season, with the manager now keen to bolster his squad to ensure they remain competitive at all levels.

Central defence is an area that has been identified as needing strengthening, and the club are now ready to make an offer to do just that, with a top young Spaniard.

Aston Villa Ready to Bid for Jon Martin

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery looks on

According to Sports Boom, Aston Villa are ready to make a bid to sign Real Sociedad star Jon Martin this summer.

Martin, who has been described as ‘tremendous’, is considered to be one of the best young Spanish defenders around, with the 20-year-old making 29 starts across all competitions for the club this season, scoring twice in La Liga as the team missed out on qualifying for the Champions League.

Villa are expecting big changes in their squad this summer, with Tyrone Mings expected to depart while Victor Lindelof and Pau Torres have also been linked with moves away.

Emery is understood to want an ‘elite’ central defender in his squad to partner Ezri Konsa, and has given his green light for Villa to table a €25m (£21m) bid for the youngster. However, Sociedad don’t want to lose the talented defender, and are pointing towards his €50m (£43m) release clause to avoid any negotiations.

The club remain in discussions with the player and his representatives over potential personal terms, but a number of top European clubs are also keeping an eye on the situation.

Aston Villa Can Seal Deal for Martin

Konsa is the leading man in the Aston Villa defence as things stand, and all of Torres, Mings, and Lindelof have partnered him with success during the most recent campaign.

But Martin is a player who has the terrific potential to be able to not only step in alongside Konsa in the coming years, but also eventually take over from his as the leader of the defence.

The £43m clause is likely too high, but Sociedad will be forced to consider any serious offers for his services. Villa know that, and they are very good in the transfer market, while Emery always gets the best out of his players. This deal could be one that looks like a bargain in a few years.

How Much 2026 FIFA World Cup Referees Get Paid

Published

By

Players aren’t the only ones with a financial stake in what happens at the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The officials overseeing football’s biggest tournament are in line for a bumper payday of their own, and two of England’s most prominent referees are set to cash in.

Premier League officials currently earn in the region of £170,000 to £180,000 a year once match fees and bonuses are factored in, a figure that varies depending on experience and seniority. But for those selected this summer, the World Cup presents a huge financial opportunity: the chance to exceed an entire season’s worth of earnings in just five weeks.

A Record-Breaking Pay Packet for Referees at the World Cup

According to The Times, World Cup referees will each earn a record-breaking $100,000 (around £75,000) for their involvement in the tournament, a figure that represents roughly double what officials were paid at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It’s an uplift that reflects both the expanded 48-team format, the increased scrutiny that comes with it, and FIFA’s determination to attract the very best officials football has to offer.

This is all before bonuses. Referees retained for the knockout rounds will earn more at each successive stage, with those handed the final on the 19th of July in line for the largest payout of all.

Two of the Premier League’s best referees have been selected for the tournament: Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. Between their Premier League commitments, FA Cup and Champions League matches this season, both are understood to have already earned in the region of £250,000, so the World Cup will be a lucrative addition on top of an already substantial year’s work.

Australian official Jarred Gillett, who also works in the Premier League, will attend in a specialist VAR capacity.

World Cup Rule Changes to be Enforced

The pay structure isn’t the only thing that’s new. FIFA has introduced a raft of rule changes for 2026.

Time-wasting is being targeted more aggressively than ever. Substitutes will be required to leave the pitch within ten seconds, and any player who goes off for treatment will have to remain off the pitch for a full minute before returning. There’s also a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks, and players who cover their mouths during confrontations with officials risk immediate dismissal.

VAR’s powers have been expanded too. For the first time, the system will be able to overturn a corner if it was incorrectly awarded, and review red cards issued for a second yellow. Two things fans have been crying out for.

VAR will also have the power to intervene and disallow goals for a foul by an attacking player even before the ball has crossed the line.

With 52 referees, 88 assistant referees and 30 VAR officials overseeing 104 matches, the infrastructure in place this summer is the largest in World Cup history by quite some distance.

Man Utd Open Talks to Sign Fernandes After Ederson, Personal Terms Agreed

Published

Manchester United have now fully turned their attentions to their second signing of the summer after completing an agreement to sign Ederson from Atalanta.

The Red Devils have agreed a £38m deal with the Serie A side to bring the Brazil star to Old Trafford, with the central midfielder now a late addition to the Brazil World Cup squad, which means a deal may be delayed before it is officially signed off and announced.

But with an agreement in place and transfer sorted, United are now moving on to their next targets, and have opened club-to-club talks for their next potential signing.

West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes celebrates scoring vs Sunderland

According to Roundtable, Man Utd have now opened club-to-club talks with West Ham United over a deal to sign Mateus Fernandes.

Fernandes, who has been described as a ‘superstar’, is expected to leave the Hammers this summer after they were relegated to the Championship, but the east London side are currently demanding around £80m to let him leave, despite having paid Southampton around £40m just 12 months prior in the same situation.

United are now ready to push into negotiations, but have absolutely no intention of going near that £80m asking price, and are not interested in taking part in a long saga.

The Portuguese midfielder has already agreed personal terms on a move to Old Trafford, having received glowing references from Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick, and now negotiations are expected to accelerate in the coming weeks over a deal.

Deal There to be Done for Man Utd

Mateus Fernandes

While West Ham are playing hardball behind the scenes over a deal for the 21-year-old midfielder, the expectation everywhere is that he will leave the London Stadium before the new season begins.

The £80m price tag is far too high, and West Ham know it too. But with a 15% sell-on clause owed to Southampton from any profit, they want to maximise their returns. Man Utd, however, have been burned far too many times in the past, and INEOS have seemingly learned from mistakes by the previous regime.

A deal will get done eventually, but for how much remains to be seen, and whether it’s Man United who agree terms with West Ham or not is also not guaranteed.
