Harry Maguire is ‘One of Football’s Most Underrated Players’

Published

on

Manchester United enjoyed a terrific weekend under the interim stewardship of Michael Carrick by beating table-topping Arsenal 3-2 on Sunday evening and Gary Lineker, in the wake of the Emirates Stadium encounter, has praised one of United’s players as being ‘one of the most underrated players in football’.

Lisandro Martinez’s own goal opened the scoring on the weekend before Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu scored in the 37th minute and 50th minute, respectively, for United to earn control of the affair. Naturally, Mikel Arteta-managed Arsenal then lumped the ball in from a corner and Mikel Merino prodded home in the 84th minute.

Too risk-averse in their approach, the Gunners engine room allowed the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes too much space in the middle of the park as they pushed for a winner. Matheus Cunha picked up the ball, drove at the back-tracking Arsenal backline and curled his effort into the bottom corner to win the match.

By virtue of their emphatic win on away soil, United leapfrogged arch-rivals Liverpool into the top four of the Premier League table and Carrick’s primary objective between now and the end of his interim spell will be to secure Champions League qualification for 2025/26. Up next, they face Fulham – but how will Carrick line up?

The squad’s current form has given the midfielder-turned-manager a selection headache given so many players covered themselves in glory: Casemiro anchored the engine room well, Cunha’s cameo was electric, and captain Fernandes was (characteristically) at the heart of the victory.

The Rest is Football podcast – hosted by Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer – analysed the five-goal thriller at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but none of the aforementioned trio were given their flowers. Instead, 32-year-old Harry Maguire was singled out by Richards. “Harry Maguire in a low block is very, very good. I know he’s laughed at and people make memes all the time,” said the former Manchester City defender.

Lineker, widely regarded as one of the best England strikers in football history, then added: “Do you know what I think about Harry Maguire? I think he’s one of the most underrated players in football. I know people have a pop at him, even people in the game have a pop at him. And I know that he can be turned by a striker with pace but he makes up for it to a degree with his intelligence.”

“He can play as well, he’s good on the ball and he’s never let England down when he’s played for his country. I would also say he’s bloody brilliant in both boxes from set-pieces. There is an obvious weakness with the slight lack of pack but he’s got the experience to handle that.”

Just one week after handling Erling Haaland with ease in United’s 2-0 win over City, Maguire – alongside the quietly brilliant Lisandro Martinez – was issued a different task in the shape of Gabriel Jesus, but the Englishman was equally imperious, taking 52 touches of the ball and playing eight passes into the final third.

Defensively sound too, the ex-Hull City man won all three of his ground duels, and he was successful in both of his duels in the air. Even when Jesus was replaced by Viktor Gyokeres and the Swede offered a different problem, Maguire remained resolute and swept up at every given opportunity. It was a simply colossal display.

Despite Upturn in Form, Harry Maguire Faces Uncertain Future at Old Trafford

Maguire’s redemption arc is one for the ages: he was initially signed for £80 million from Leicester City in 2019, found himself slipping down the pecking order following the arrivals of Martinez and Raphael Varane, and now he is one of the most experienced members of the squad. But his future at the club remains fairly uncertain.

That remains the case despite the 64-cap England international putting in brilliant back-to-back displays against two of England’s toughest sides. As things stand, Maguire’s Old Trafford contract is set to come to an end in the summer of 2026 and talks over fresh terms are yet to progress.

The fact that Casemiro will be leaving come the end of the season means that Maguire’s expertise may be required as they enter the post-Ruben Amorim era by appointing a permanent successor in the summer. By design, the United squad is continually getting younger – but Maguire’s know-how could be pivotal.

Update Emerges on Man Utd Signing Newcastle Defender Lewis Hall

Published

An update has now emerged on Manchester United’s interest in Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall from journalist Luke Edwards.

Hall has emerged as one of the most exciting young left-backs in Europe over the last couple of years, but he struggled to nail down a starting place in Eddie Howe’s side towards the end of last season.

GIVEMESPORT sources recently confirmed that Hall is considering his future with the Magpies after being left devastated by his omission from the England World Cup squad.

It’s understood that Manchester United are one of the sides showing an interest in signing Hall as he aims to impress Thomas Tuchel for the future.

Hall was playing behind Dan Burn for Newcastle in the final weeks of the season, and Tuchel ended up calling up the latter for the World Cup.

Update: Man Utd Interest in Lewis Hall

Reliable journalist Edwards has provided an update on Manchester United’s reported interest in Newcastle defender Hall.

Edwards claims that Newcastle have not had any contact from the Red Devils and have not been informed that the player wants to leave.

As it stands, Manchester United have clearly not held club-to-club talks, which is no surprise as they undoubtedly have other priorities.

There’s no doubt Hall will be frustrated with his situation at the moment, in terms of club and country. He’ll at least be hoping for a guaranteed start next season.

Newcastle Could Struggle to Keep Hall

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall celebrating

Newcastle might find it difficult to keep Hall at the club heading into the summer transfer window, especially if a club like Manchester United are in the race.

The Magpies endured a difficult 2025-2026 season, meaning they won’t be playing European football next campaign.

The Red Devils will be able to offer Hall Champions League football and a club heading in the right direction under Michael Carrick.

Newcastle took a huge step back last season, and it’s no surprise that Hall is disappointed with his situation after failing to make the England squad.

At one point, it looked like Hall would be a guarantee to start at left back for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Tottenham in Talks to Sign Free Agent Striker Dusan Vlahovic

Tottenham are preparing for one of their most crucial summer transfer windows in their recent history after being involved in a relegation battle during the 2025-2026 season.

It’s the first window under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, and the hierarchy will likely be looking to back him in the market.

The Italian manager certainly did a good enough job in his first few months in charge to warrant the club backing him.

There’s an argument to suggest that Spurs need reinforcements all over the pitch in the summer, especially as there’s likely to be players that will want to leave the club.

So far this summer, Tottenham are already closing in on the double signing of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, who both look set to arrive on free transfers, GIVEMESPORT understands.

According to a report from TeamTalk, Tottenham are one of the sides to have held talks with the camp of Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Serbian forward looks set to leave Juventus this summer when his contract expires, and it’s claimed that he would prefer a move to a European side despite interest from Saudi Arabia.

A host of Premier League clubs have also spoken to Vlahovic’s camp. Many are likely to see him as one of the bargains of the summer due to his free agent status.

An announcement on Wednesday confirmed that Vlahovic would not be signing a new contract at Juve, and he’s now free to join another club this summer.

Vlahovic’s Wage Could be an Issue

Although Vlahovic is going to be available on a free transfer during the summer transfer window, Tottenham are still likely to have to pay him a significant wage package.

Reports have claimed that Vlahovic is demanding in the region of £266,000 a week, which is certainly a lot for a club like Tottenham.

Vlahovic, described as being one of the best strikers in the world by teammate Khephren Thuram, hasn’t been at his best in the last few years.

There’s no doubt Vlahovic would improve Tottenham’s striker options, but they have to weigh up whether it makes sense from a financial perspective as well as a football one.

F1 Driver ‘Under Pressure’ to Save His Job Heading Into Monaco GP

The 2026 Formula One season may only be five races old, but one driver is already “under pressure” to save his job heading into this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The current campaign couldn’t have gone any better for Mercedes, who have won every race to date this season. Many other teams, however, are struggling for pace amid the raft of technical changes that have been introduced for 2026.

As a result of the ever-changing nature of the sport, teams are consistently evaluating their approaches, including who is driving their cars.

F1 Driver Faces Uncertain Future Despite Promising Start to 2026 Season

Even those who have shown signs of improvement seemingly aren’t exempt from the chopping block as a new report suggests that an F1 team could be preparing to cut ties with a driver who has scored points in three of this year’s five races.

New Zealand’s Liam Lawson is no stranger to having to battle for his spot on the F1 grid, having been demoted from Red Bull to sister team Racing Bulls after just two races of the 2025 campaign.

The 24-year-old was then forced to fend off competition from Yuki Tsunoda to retain his seat in 2026. To his credit, Lawson has made a creditable start to the new campaign, racking up a total of 16 points.

To put that number into perspective, only Max Verstappen (43) has more points this season within the Red Bull family. Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Isack Hadjar, sits on 14 points, with Lawson’s Racing Bulls colleague Arvid Lindblad having picked up just five points.

However, despite being impressed by the Kiwi’s start to the campaign, Racing Bulls could ruthlessly axe him if his results drop off. They already have his replacement in mind.

The Red Bull second string are increasingly keen to hand an opportunity to teenage F2 prospect Nikola Tsolov and a recent report from SoyMotor suggests that Lawson could be the man to make way for the talented Bulgarian.

The report notes that Tsolov is “knocking on the door” for a seat at Racing Bulls next season and believes that Lawson will find himself out of a job if he doesn’t continue to outperform his current teammate Lindblad.

Racing Bulls only handed Lawson a one-year deal in December, meaning that it won’t cost them anything to move on from him at the end of the season. Sources suggest that he will need to maintain a “clear advantage” over Lindblad in the Drivers’ Championship standings in order to earn a fresh contract and retain his seat.

That means that every race counts for Lawson, starting in Monaco this weekend.
