You can almost always rely on something going sideways in fight week, and UFC 326 has had its share of late drama.
Firstly though, the good news. Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira both made weight without a hitch, with Holloway coming in at 155.5lbs and Oliveira hitting 156lbs, meaning their BMF title fight is officially on and the headline bout everyone came to see remains very much intact.
It shapes up as a genuinely fascinating contest between two men who know exactly what it feels like to be on the wrong end of an Ilia Topuria finish. Holloway was stopped by the current lightweight champion at UFC 308, suffering the first knockout loss of a career that spans well over a decade at the top level. Oliveira’s turn came at UFC 317, where Topuria ended his night in the first round.
Both men have since responded in the best way possible. Holloway put on a masterclass against Dustin Poirier in what turned out to be The Diamond’s farewell fight, while Oliveira returned to winning ways on home soil in Brazil.
Between them, they have 67 UFC fights, which tells its own story about the kind of combined experience heading into the Octagon tonight. Oliveira’s 21 finishes remain the most in UFC history, and there is every reason to think this one ends early.
There is also a slice of history on the line for Holloway. He currently needs just 15 minutes and 36 seconds of fight time to surpass Rafael Dos Anjos’ all-time record for the longest total in UFC history, and with this one scheduled for five rounds, he has every chance of getting there this weekend.
The rest of the card is nothing to be sniffed at either. Caio Borralho and Reinier de Ridder square off in a mouth-watering middleweight co-main event that has genuine title implications written all over it, while Rob Font, Raul Rosas Jr, Drew Dober, and Gregory Rodrigues all feature further down the card. UFC President Dana White is also expected to use Saturday night as the platform to announce the full card for the promotion’s upcoming White House show, which should give fight fans plenty to chew over.
UFC 326 Fight Off After Failed Weight Cut
Weigh-in drama appears to occur all too often these days, and UFC 326 hasn’t escaped it. Jeong Yeong Lee’s featherweight clash with Gaston Bolanos has been pulled from the card after the former failed to show up for the weigh-ins on Friday.
The news broke in slightly chaotic fashion, as it often does with late withdrawals, with UFC commentator Jon Anik getting word out before the official confirmation came through on the weigh-in show. Broadcaster Dan Hellie did not mince his words when he addressed it directly.
“The Gaston Bolanos fight with Jeong Yeong Lee is off,” Hellie said. “Lee’s not gonna be able to make weight, which is why that fight is off. I think it was more than just a couple of pounds, but I am just finding that out right now. It was last-minute, too, though.”
UFC 326 Start Time
Every other fighter on the card made it through the weigh-ins without issue. As a result, the show will now get underway at 5.30pm ET, with the pre-show kicking off at 4.30pm ET.
Not the ideal start to the weekend for Bolanos, who now finds himself without a fight through no fault of his own, but at least he still gets paid his show purse. The card still remains a strong one and there is plenty left to look forward to for fans, even if this issue has caused the night to be cut slightly short.
