Jermain Defoe’s first match as Woking manager couldn’t have been much more thrilling as the Cardinals drew 3-3 with Eastleigh in their National League clash at Kingfield Stadium.
The 43-year-old, considered one of the best strikers in Premier League history, took his first foray into management earlier this week when he was announced as Woking manager. His appointment was well received across the media, with former Sky Sports commentator and avid Woking fan Martin Tyler sharing his excitement.
“On talkSport they had Thomas Tuchel talking about losing to Japan, followed by Jermain Defoe talking about coming in at Woking on the talkSport news. So it’s big stuff,” Tyler said, per the BBC.
“He can leave a legacy here. The manager who takes Woking to the Football League, I will help build the statue, I promise you, because it’s that important.”
.Jermain Defoe’s First Woking Match Ends in Six-Goal Thriller
Defoe hit the back of the net more than 300 times in his career, and it was goals galore in his first game in management.
The former England striker’s tenure got off to a perfect start as Harry Beautyman gave the home side the lead after 16 minutes.
Eastleigh, who went into the game on a seven-match winless streak, hit back and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
It looked as if Defoe’s first match would end in defeat, but he was rescued by Kian Pennant, the nephew of former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.
Pennant, 21, turned the match on its head after entering the fray with half-an-hour remaining. His shot was parried by Eastleigh’s goalkeeper and Olly Sanderson headed home to halve the deficit.
Pennant then found the net with five minutes remaining to restore parity. There were no further goals as the two sides shared the spoils in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw.
Jermain Defoe Praises Pennant Following Woking 3-3 Eastleigh
Pennant joined Woking last month on a free transfer from Leicester. Defoe spoke highly of the youngster following his first match in charge. He said, per talkSPORT:
“Everyone wants to play, and when you come on, you have to make an impact and he definitely did that. We had one training session and that was more tactical, but from what I’ve seen so far, he really excites me.”
“I’m looking at everyone. When you become a manager or coach, training can’t replicate the game, it was a fantastic finish. I’m happy for him and hopefully, going forward, he can gain confidence from this and he can help the team from now until the end of the season.”
Asked about his striker’s uncle, he said: “He’ll be buzzing! I played with Jermaine…he was sharp, hat-trick against Southampton, and if you speak to him, he’ll say he could have done a lot more, he played for big clubs.
“It’s obviously in his family, in his blood, so if he can become what Pennant did as a player, then happy days.”
Woking are currently 11th in the National League, having amassed 55 points from 41 matches. Defoe will manage five more matches this season, with their next game coming against Braintree Town on Monday, April 6.
