Obi defends defections, hints about dumping ADC if ‘process is compromised’

Peter Obi, a key opposition figure and presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has indicated he may leave the party if its internal processes are compromised.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, Obi defended his history of moving between political parties, insisting that his decisions have always been guided by principle rather than convenience.
Responding to criticism that he often exits parties instead of fixing internal issues, Obi said his past departures were driven by a refusal to participate in flawed or unethical systems.
“I moved from APGA to the PDP because I had issues with my successor, the governor, who came after me. I will not allow it to become toxic and become destructive to his governance of the state. I moved out,” he said.
He added that his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party was due to irregularities in its internal processes.
“In PDP, I said it before, people were not playing by the rules, it was transactional, I cannot be part of transactional primary, I cannot be paying people to serve them, so I moved to Labour,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor also accused the ruling party and the Federal Government of masterminding the crisis that led to his decision to leave the Labour Party, citing delays in recognition of a Supreme Court ruling.
“In Labour Party, Supreme Court decided against it in April, INEC did not recognise it until 7th of January, eight months after,” he said, adding that attempts were made to trap him in a dysfunctional system.
“They thought I would be there for the fire to burn me. When I now escape they will now say Peter Obi cannot stay to put out the fire which they put and then I left,” he added.
On his current position in the ADC, Obi said he remains committed but warned that he would not hesitate to act if similar issues arise.
“I am in ADC with the same people, some of whom I left in PDP and other parties but we are going through the same process, if that process is again compromised, I will speak out.” he said.
Obi stressed that integrity in political processes is non-negotiable for him, noting, “If I have to move twenty times, I will do it. You cannot use the process of yesterday to build tomorrow.
He also maintained that he has never engaged in electoral malpractice or influenced judicial outcomes.
“I’ve never been involved in any form of rigging. I’ve never been part of paying people in judiciary or anywhere to give me judgment I do not deserve,” he said.

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dino Melaye, has hinted that Nigerians are no longer interested in President Bola Tinubu’s second tenure.
Melaye said Nigerians can no longer endure another four years of Tinubu’s corrupt, reckless and incompetent administration.
Posting on X, Melaye wrote: “Tinubu’s second term is no longer about interest but existential. Nigerians cannot afford another four years of a miserable, corrupt, reckless, incompetent and prodical government.”
The former Kogi West Senator also accused Tinubu of playing politics with the lives of Nigerians.
He also accused the president of undermining democracy and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
“Tinubu is playing politics with the lives of Nigerians, undermining democracy and Gov Seyi Makinde,” he said.
Tinubu is the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate after emerging winner of the party’s primary election with about 11 million votes.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani, has disclosed that the party is open for an alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sani made this revelation on Tuesday when he featured in an interview on Arise Television.
He was speaking on the readiness of the party for next year’s general elections, noting that the PDP is the strongest party across the country.
“Yes, of course, we are ready to accommodate alliances and collaboration, and I can assure you that, in view of the situation on ground and the lack of acceptability of the All Progressives Congress, APC, by Nigerians, PDP stands a chance.
“Nigerians have rejected the APC because they believe that the APC is the agent of poverty and poor governance.
“There are so many protests on bad governance. Nigerians have openly rejected the APC, and so they need an alternative. The PDP is very poised, very ready to provide that alternative,” he said.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Sani, says former president Goodluck Jonathan is taking his time before publicly accepting or rejecting the party’s nomination form ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sani made the claims on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television.
He stated that the issue of whether Jonathan is reluctant does not arise because he has been the president before.
The PDP stalwart, who noted that Jonathan wants to become president, stressed that there are obstacles along the way that he wants to clear before making his decision public.
“There is an eligibility case against Jonathan. Even though the court has dismissed the case, the people are adamant and they have gone ahead to appeal the judgment.
“Now, one thing must give way for another to thrive. Jonathan wants to become president. There are encumbrances that need to be cleared before he will express himself.
“So I won’t think there is any reluctance on his part. He is very determined to become president of Nigeria, but he is being very careful about the court case.
“So, as far as we are concerned, Jonathan is our candidate. We have put out his name, though he has not come out publicly to either accept or reject. I think he’s been very strategic. He’s taking his time,” the PDP chieftain said.
