You’re playing into hands of ADC’s enemies – Okai warns Atiku, Peter Obi supporters
Political activist and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Usman Austin Okai has cautioned supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi’s “Obidient” movement, warning that their ongoing media war is a dangerous distraction to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, coalition.
In a statement he issued on Friday, Okai noted that the internal friction between both camps is threatening opposition unity and could jeopardize efforts to resolve the party’s leadership tussle currently before the courts.
“We are at the Supreme Court, patiently praying and waiting for a favorable outcome that will return our party to us, yet the supporters of these two gladiators are engaged in a proxy media war,” Okai said.
The activist specifically called on both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to take charge of their followers.
He urged the two leaders to be more decisive in defining a “mode of operation” for their supporters to ensure their energy is directed toward common goals rather than internal bickering.
Okai said: “The ongoing media hostilities between these two camps are not just unnecessary; they are a direct threat to the ADC Coalition.
“We cannot afford a house divided against itself while we are in the middle of a critical legal and political struggle.”
He emphasized that the primary focus of the coalition should remain the judicial process aimed at “rescuing” the ADC.
He warned that while supporters are busy attacking each other on social media, political opponents are watching and ready to take advantage of the cracks in the alliance.
“What is important to us right now is the legal battle to secure the party’s mandate. Every distraction in the media gives our opponents the upper hand and weakens our collective stance,” he added.
Okai further expressed concern that the toxic nature of the current media war would make post-primary reconciliation nearly impossible.
He argued that the insults and divisions being sown today will create deep-seated bitterness that cannot be easily healed when the coalition eventually needs to present a united front for the general elections.
“If we do not stop this now, the damage will be permanent. You cannot spend months destroying each other and then expect to hold hands once a candidate emerges. This media war must end for the sake of the ADC and the future of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.

Sokoto PDP crisis deepens as factions produce parallel candidates, executives

By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto
The internal crisis in the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated, with rival factions now producing separate governorship candidates and parallel state executive committees ahead of future elections.
The development highlights ongoing divisions within the opposition party in the state, with each faction claiming legitimacy and recognition from the party’s national leadership.
One of the factions, reportedly aligned with the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, held a gathering in Sokoto on Saturday where it announced Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Sokoto as its governorship candidate.
The group also inaugurated a new state executive committee, naming Alhaji Aminu Hayatu Tafida as chairman. The exercise was reportedly supervised by a representative of the party’s national headquarters, Alhaji Mustapha Borodo.
The event was attended by some party stakeholders, including the PDP National Organizing Secretary, Umar Muhammad Bature, and a former member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency.
Addressing members at the gathering, Bature said the leadership dispute would be resolved through the courts, noting that a judgment expected on July 11, 2026, would determine the authentic leadership of the party in the state.
However, a rival faction loyal to former presidential aspirant Tanimu Turaki rejected the outcome of the gathering and insisted that its structure remains the legitimate leadership of the PDP in Sokoto State.
The group had earlier endorsed Alhaji Mustapha Shehu Sokoto as its governorship candidate. He is a former Chairman of Sokoto North Local Government and a former Chairman of the Sokoto State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).
Speaking on behalf of the faction, its chairman, Alhaji Bello Aliyu Goronyo, dismissed the parallel congress and inauguration, insisting that his executive remains the duly constituted leadership of the party in the state.
He said the current executive was elected and inaugurated in October 2024 for a tenure running until October 2028, adding that any other group claiming authority lacks legal recognition.
Goronyo further maintained that actions taken by rival factions, including candidate endorsements and executive appointments, are not binding on the party.
Political observers say the emergence of parallel structures and competing candidates reflects the depth of the PDP’s internal divisions in Sokoto State. The outcome of ongoing legal processes is expected to play a key role in determining the party’s leadership direction ahead of future elections.

2027: APC primary a sham, Tinubu should intervene – Arise
Ayodele Arise, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and aspirant for the ticket of the Ekiti North Senatorial District, has described the party’s primary election as a sham.
He then urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, intervene in the crisis trailing the outcome of the exercise.
In a statement at the weekend, Arise said state governors remained a major challenge for a smooth conduct of the recent APC primaries.
Recall that the APC Committee, which supervised the process, had declared the sitting lawmaker representing Ekiti North, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, as the winner.
However, Arise and other contenders for the ticket, including Dipo Bamisaye and Dare Owolabi, had since dismissed the outcome as fraudulent and manipulated.
Senator Arise, who represented the senatorial district between 2007 and 2011, said the primary was a sham and the party is paying lip service to the crisis the election had generated.
“When we talk about internal democracy, it is still a very big challenge. It’s one thing for us to have a Constitution; it’s another thing for people to try to circumvent it or the guidelines for any election.
“That was demonstrated in no small measure when I tried to come back through the primary because I knew what was in the pipeline, so I went into it to prove a point.
“It will be a shame if some of us passed through this country and we don’t have the voice to correct the anomalies and let people know that if we want to practice democracy, let us practice it. If we don’t want it, it’s a different kettle of fish.
“The experience I had during the primary, I really don’t want to overbeat that because I believe the chairman of the party has spoken with Mr. President, and I think they are looking at all the challenges, and I am sure those of us who worked and won our elections will be given our mandate in due course.”
“As we discover problems, people respond to them, and I believe, more than anybody else, that our President has been very proactive in terms of fixing some of these challenges, working on them, and ensuring that corrections are made before it’s too late,” he stated.
He added that “the issue of the governors is still a major problem in terms of trying to get to the Senate.
“Even when you aren’t contesting against them, if you aren’t their favored candidate, the chances of your making it are a little bit very challenging.”
DAILY POST reports that the APC primaries that were held last month were marred with controversies.

2027: How INEC can achieve free, fair, credible election – Baba-Ahmed
The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has revealed how the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, can have free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
In a statement on Sunday, Baba-Ahmed, said that INEC must be strengthened and shielded from undue political interference to enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
The former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on political matters noted that called for a review of the process for appointing the INEC Chairman, National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs.
According to him, the current system gives the executive excessive influence over the electoral body.
“The moment you hand over an electoral body to a partisan administration that wants to retain power, you create serious questions about its neutrality,” he said.
He also called for greater financial autonomy for the commission, insisting that INEC should be allowed to present and defend its budget directly before the National Assembly without executive interference.
The former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on political affairs urged authorities to impose stiffer penalties on politicians and other individuals involved in electoral fraud and violence.
Baba-Ahmed pointed out that the persistence of electoral offences is largely due to the lack of accountability for offenders.
“Politicians who compromise the electoral process must face the consequences of their actions. The culture of impunity must end,” he added.
