16 Longest Bans in English Football History
It takes a lot for the English Football Association (FA) to suspend a footballer from the sport for a lengthy period. Some of the longest bans that have been handed out were for offences ranging from gambling to doping.
Mykhailo Mudryk has become the latest star sanctioned with a lengthy lay-off from football after being slapped with a four-year ban over doping offences. That’s not the longest suspension the English game has ever seen, however.
From Rio Ferdinand to Eric Cantona, below are the 16 longest bans in English football history according to FourFourTwo. A current England international even features.
16. Charlie Mitten – 6 Months
Manchester United were on a tour of Colombia in 1950 when Independiente Santa Fe offered Charlie Mitten a much more lucrative contract than he was receiving from the Red Devils.
He remained in South America for a year despite still being registered as a United player. Colombia weren’t part of FIFA at the time and he was fined six months’ wages and banned when sent back to England.
15. Joss Labadie – 6 Months
Joss Labadie was handed a £2,000 fine and a 10-game ban after biting Chesterfield’s Ollie Banks in 2014. He was playing for Torquay United at the time but wasn’t given his six-month suspension when plying his trade for Dagenham & Redbridge after being found to have also bitten Armand Gnanduillet and Ronnie Henry.
14. Ivan Toney – 8 Months
Ivan Toney was accused of 232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules during the 2023/24 season while playing for Brentford. The England international was forced to wait for months before learning his punishment, which was an eight-month ban when he ws found guilty in May 2023.
13. Rio Ferdinand – 8 Months
Rio Ferdinand may be one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever defenders, but that doesn’t mean the Man Utd icon doesn’t come with some controversy. The English centre-back failed to take a drug test in September 2003 despite being picked to give a sample to UK Sport doping officials. His punishment? An eight-month absence from football and missing Euro 2004 in the process.
12. Mark Bosnich – 9 Months
Mark Bosnich’s nine-month ban in 2003 effectively ended his career, as it resulted in his contract at Chelsea being terminated and he retired shortly after. The Australian goalkeeper was banned after testing positive for cocaine in April 2003. He maintained his innocence in the aftermath, saying:
“Yes, I took drugs but only once my career was over. I have no regrets. I owe football absolutely nothing.
“At the time of my drugs test in November 2002 I was not taking cocaine… I got talking to a girl who later admitted that she had slipped the drug into her drink. I must have had a sip of her glass.”

Scholes didn’t hold back when revealing who he thought was the worst Red Devil ever
11. Eric Cantona – 9 Months
One of the more infamous moments in Premier League history saw Eric Cantona take matters into his own hands and kung-fu kicked a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst Park in 1995. Matthew Simmons’ taunting of the Frenchman led to him snapping and he was sent off, suspended from football for nine months and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.
10. Sandro Tonali – 10 Months
Sandro Tonali sat on the sidelines for 10 months after being found guilty of breaching Italy’s gambling regulations in 202. The suspension came just months after the midfielder completed a £55 million transfer to Newcastle United. He missed the majority of his debut season in England and Euro 2024.
9. Abel Xavier – 12 Months
While others had been punished for taking recreational drugs, Abel Xavier was the first Premier League footballer to be found guilty of taking performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Playing for Middlesbrough at the time, Xavier was given an 18-month ban originally, before it was reduced to 12.
8. James Harris – 12 Months
James Harris was one of five Accrington Stanley players who bet on their side to lose a game against Bury in 2009. This led the FA to have ‘serious concerns that the outcome of the match may have been fixed’. As the only player involved to feature in the match, Harris was handed the harshest sanction.
7. Billy Cook – 12 Months
All the way back in 1915, a game had to be abandoned as Billy Cook refused to leave the pitch despite being shown a red card for persistent fouling. The Oldham Athletic defender felt he had done nothing wrong but was hit with a year-long ban by the FA due to the game being stopped over his refusal to leave the pitch.
6. Joey Barton – 13 Months
Joey Barton has never been far away from controversy, whether it’s on or off the pitch. The ex-Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder was found guilty of placing 1,260 bets on football matches between 2006-2016. These included some that he had played in. This was far from his first lengthy suspension from the sport, but his initial 18-month ban was later reduced by five months.
5. Chris Buckley – 17 Months
Chris Buckley refused to play for Aston Villa at the start of the 1912/13 campaign as he felt he was owed £250 but never received it. The Villans responded by suspending him indefinitely and reporting him to the league. His actions were later deemed illegal and he was out of action until April 1914.
4. Mykhailo Mudryk – 4 Years
Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk was shocked to hear he had been banned from playing in late 2024. It came after the banned substance meldonium was found in his system while on international duty with Ukraine. The winger is set to appeal the April 2026 decision to hand him the longest suspension in Premier League history.
3. Bradley Wood – 6 Years
Bradley Wood of Lincoln City was given a six-year ban after being found to have picked up bookings deliberately during FA Cup victories over Ipswich Town and Burnley. Seven people bet on his to pick up a yellow card, with two being close friends. Wood got a five-year suspension for the bookings and a further 12 months for other betting offences he admitted to.
2. Enoch West – 30 Years
Eight players (four Man Utd and four Liverpool) were given lifetime bans from the beautiful game for match fixing in 1915. The other seven men had their bans lifted after enlisting for the army for World War I. Enoch West refused to enlist and his ban stood until 1945, when he was 59 years old.
1. Olafur Gottskalksson – Lifetime ban
Goalkeeper Olafur Gottskalksson was chosen to give a sample when testers arrived at Torquay United’s ground in 2005. However, the Icelandic shot-stopper quickly disappeared as he knew his cocaine addiction would show up in the results. The FA banned him indefinitely and he has never played football again. Speaking about the situation, Gottskalksson said:
“It’s a real shame, I saw nothing else in the situation but to let myself go.
“I went to the Netherlands. Just took the next plane to Amsterdam and was there for a week, 10 days in total oblivion. I was advertised as missing in the papers here at home and didn’t realise what I was doing to the people here at home. You only listen to your own bulls**t.”

Alasdair Gold Names Tottenham’s Next Three Transfer Targets After Dubravka
Tottenham Hotspur’s next three transfer targets have been named by Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold, after the club completed their fourth summer signing with the addition of Martin Dubravka.
Tottenham chiefs are on it, and they need to be after narrowly avoiding a disastrous relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season.
Spurs brought in Roberto De Zerbi on a long-term contract, and they know they need to seriously back him in the transfer market to improve an underperforming squad, if he is to lead them back up the Premier League standings.
Dubravka was the third player to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer this summer after Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, and with Jan Paul van Hecke also joining and Pedro Porro signing a new long-term deal, the north London outfit’s defence is shaping up nicely ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
De Zerbi wants more ambitious additions further forward to make a serious push next term, with at least two central midfielders and potentially up to three attackers wanted after the business they’ve already completed.
Midfield in particular appears to be the main priority in recent days, as Tottenham look to send out a statement to their top flight rivals.
Gold Names Next Three Tottenham Targets
The next part of Tottenham’s squad overhaul will be in midfield, with Gold confirming that talks are ongoing over a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
The Football London journalist claims that any move for the Italian will set Spurs back around £100m, but the 26-year-old has emerged as the manager’s key target for the position.
Tottenham are also keen on a move to sign Mateus Fernandes from London neighbours West Ham United, although they face stiff competition from Manchester United in the race for the wantaway Portugal international.
Finally, the north Londoners are still interested in bringing Savinho to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having failed in their attempt to sign the Brazilian from Manchester City last summer.

Tottenham have made surprise contact with Chelsea over a deal to sign striker Liam Delap, as De Zerbi looks to add a new centre-forward to his squad ahead of next season.
It is said that a Stamford Bridge exit for the 23-year-old is now a possibility following a difficult debut season with the Blues following his move from Ipswich Town.
Delap only found the net twice across the 2025-26 campaign, although that hasn’t stopped Spurs making an enquiry over his availability.
Chelsea are said to be looking for £40m to sell the player they signed for £30m 12 months ago, but the fee is putting off potential suitors.
Tottenham currently have Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as their main centre-forward options heading into next season, although the latter has long been linked with a move away from Spurs and could finally leave this summer.
Spurs must also decide what they do with the highly-rated Will Lankshear, who impressed on loan at Oxford United last term.

Thomas Partey Could Be Blocked From Knockout Tie
The 2026 World Cup could have yet more travel complications beyond the group stages as Ghana’s Thomas Partey faces being blocked from featuring in his country’s first knockout match, according to The Sun.
The Black Stars are almost guaranteed a place in the Round of 32 after picking up four points from their first two fixtures. A narrow victory against Panama and a goalless draw with England mean Ghana could finish either first, second or third in Group L.
Partey started in the England game, but he may not be allowed to feature for his team in the next round, depending on their final position. The 33-year-old is awaiting trial in the UK on rape and sexual assault charges. He has denied all allegations.
Thomas Partey’s World Cup Future in Doubt
Should Ghana beat Croatia in their final group game and overcome England’s goal difference in the process, the Africans would top Group L. That’d set up a Round of 32 tie with one of the best third-placed teams from Groups E, H, I, J or K.
Partey would be able to play in that game as it’d take place in the United States, just like the England draw. It would be played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
However, there will be complications if they finish as runners-up in the group. The midfielder had to sit out of his nation’s first match against Panama after being denied a visa to enter Canada due to his ongoing case.
A second-placed finish would see Ghana play against either Portugal or Colombia at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario. It’s likely the ex-Arsenal man would again be blocked from entering the country.
Kansas City would be the venue hosting Ghana in the first knockout round if they end up finishing third. That would see Partey available to Carlos Queiroz for selection.
Partey Handshake Snubbed By England’s Djed Spence
Ahead of his first appearance at this year’s World Cup, all attention was on whether every England player would shake Partey’s hand. Tottenham’s Djed Spence appeared to be the only Three Lions member to avoid the pre-match routine.

The English Football Association originally took time to consider whether they’d make the players’ decision for them before the match. But in the end, they left it up to each individual on whether they wanted to acknowledge their opponent or not.
Partey was asked about the incident in the mixed zone following the draw, but did not provide an answer.

Lionel Messi’s Shock 2016 Argentina ‘Retirement’ and Reversal
Lionel Messi’s World Cup triumph with Argentina in 2022 and his multiple Copa America titles stand as some of the proudest achievements of his career, yet they might never have happened had he not made a crucial decision back in 2016.
After another agonising final defeat that summer, a devastated Messi told the world his time with the national team was over, convinced he had given everything he had to give without reward.
Had he stuck to that call, the Argentina career now remembered as one of the greatest in football history would simply not exist.
Lionel Messi’s 2016 Argentina Retirement Explained
Messi’s announcement came moments after Argentina’s penalty shootout defeat to Chile in the 2016 Copa America Centenario final, an off-schedule tournament arranged to mark 100 years of the tournament.
It was a result that condemned the then-29-year-old to a fourth major final loss with his country and third in a row, following the 2007 Copa America final, then the 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany, before another Copa America defeat in 2015. In the immediate aftermath, a visibly devastated Messi told reporters:
“For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion. It’s been four finals, it’s not meant for me. I tried. It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think it’s over.”
He was adamant in the moment that there was no going back on the decision, framing it as final rather than a knee-jerk reaction to defeat.
Messi’s frustration ran deeper than the final losses. He had become increasingly unhappy with the running of Argentine football behind the scenes, having taken aim at the Argentine Football Association publicly after the squad endured a lengthy delay travelling to the final, where he labelled them a “disaster.”
Lionel Messi Diet, Exercise & Workout Routine
Lionel Messi is indisputably the GOAT when it comes to football, winning titles and breaking records wherever he goes, but how does he do it?
Back home, the reaction to his announcement was one of shock, with fans taking to the streets with signs urging him to reconsider. Goalkeeper Sergio Romero was among those to speak out, suggesting Messi’s comments had come from raw emotion in the heat of the moment and admitting he could not picture the national side without him.
Even long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo urged him to reconsider:
“It hurts me to see Messi in tears and I hope he returns to his national team, because they need him.”
Fans and pundits across the football world shared that hope, with much of the coverage treating the retirement as a passionate outburst rather than a permanent goodbye. Nobody was ready to see him go so soon, and they got their wish.
Why Lionel Messi Points to the Sky When He Scores
It’s one of the most recognisable celebrations in all of football.
What Happened Since Messi Changed his Mind
Messi’s international exile lasted barely two months. Ahead of a pair of World Cup qualifiers later that summer, he issued a statement reversing his decision, citing his love for the country and the shirt as too strong to walk away from.
He explained that his intention had never been to cause harm to Argentine football, and that he preferred to help fix its problems rather than criticise from the outside, while thanking supporters who had urged him to stay.
“My love for Argentina and this jersey forced me to return.”
The U-turn changed the course of his career entirely. Five years later, Messi led Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021, before lifting the World Cup itself in 2022, in what was one of the best matches ever played at a World Cup. He added a further Copa America title in 2024 and, individually, has now scored over 120 goals in more than 200 appearances for his country.
20 Greatest Argentine Players in Football History [Ranked]
From Lionel Messi to Diego Maradona, Argentina have time and again produced true greats of the game.
An international career that briefly looked finished at 29, instead turned into the most decorated spell of Messi’s international career, and all but sealed the argument for Messi being the best footballer of all-time to many, all built on a decision he reversed within weeks of making it.
