16 Longest Bans in English Football History

Published

on

It takes a lot for the English Football Association (FA) to suspend a footballer from the sport for a lengthy period. Some of the longest bans that have been handed out were for offences ranging from gambling to doping.

Mykhailo Mudryk has become the latest star sanctioned with a lengthy lay-off from football after being slapped with a four-year ban over doping offences. That’s not the longest suspension the English game has ever seen, however.

From Rio Ferdinand to Eric Cantona, below are the 16 longest bans in English football history according to FourFourTwo. A current England international even features.

16. Charlie Mitten – 6 Months

Manchester United were on a tour of Colombia in 1950 when Independiente Santa Fe offered Charlie Mitten a much more lucrative contract than he was receiving from the Red Devils.

He remained in South America for a year despite still being registered as a United player. Colombia weren’t part of FIFA at the time and he was fined six months’ wages and banned when sent back to England.

15. Joss Labadie – 6 Months

Joss Labadie was handed a £2,000 fine and a 10-game ban after biting Chesterfield’s Ollie Banks in 2014. He was playing for Torquay United at the time but wasn’t given his six-month suspension when plying his trade for Dagenham & Redbridge after being found to have also bitten Armand Gnanduillet and Ronnie Henry.

14. Ivan Toney – 8 Months

Brentford striker Ivan Toney celebrates

Ivan Toney was accused of 232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules during the 2023/24 season while playing for Brentford. The England international was forced to wait for months before learning his punishment, which was an eight-month ban when he ws found guilty in May 2023.

13. Rio Ferdinand – 8 Months

Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand may be one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever defenders, but that doesn’t mean the Man Utd icon doesn’t come with some controversy. The English centre-back failed to take a drug test in September 2003 despite being picked to give a sample to UK Sport doping officials. His punishment? An eight-month absence from football and missing Euro 2004 in the process.

12. Mark Bosnich – 9 Months

Mark Bosnich

Mark Bosnich’s nine-month ban in 2003 effectively ended his career, as it resulted in his contract at Chelsea being terminated and he retired shortly after. The Australian goalkeeper was banned after testing positive for cocaine in April 2003. He maintained his innocence in the aftermath, saying:

“Yes, I took drugs but only once my career was over. I have no regrets. I owe football absolutely nothing.

“At the time of my drugs test in November 2002 I was not taking cocaine… I got talking to a girl who later admitted that she had slipped the drug into her drink. I must have had a sip of her glass.”

11. Eric Cantona – 9 Months

One of the more infamous moments in Premier League history saw Eric Cantona take matters into his own hands and kung-fu kicked a Crystal Palace supporter at Selhurst Park in 1995. Matthew Simmons’ taunting of the Frenchman led to him snapping and he was sent off, suspended from football for nine months and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.

10. Sandro Tonali – 10 Months

sandro tonali

Sandro Tonali sat on the sidelines for 10 months after being found guilty of breaching Italy’s gambling regulations in 202. The suspension came just months after the midfielder completed a £55 million transfer to Newcastle United. He missed the majority of his debut season in England and Euro 2024.

9. Abel Xavier – 12 Months

Abel Xavier

While others had been punished for taking recreational drugs, Abel Xavier was the first Premier League footballer to be found guilty of taking performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Playing for Middlesbrough at the time, Xavier was given an 18-month ban originally, before it was reduced to 12.

8. James Harris – 12 Months

James Harris was one of five Accrington Stanley players who bet on their side to lose a game against Bury in 2009. This led the FA to have ‘serious concerns that the outcome of the match may have been fixed’. As the only player involved to feature in the match, Harris was handed the harshest sanction.

7. Billy Cook – 12 Months

All the way back in 1915, a game had to be abandoned as Billy Cook refused to leave the pitch despite being shown a red card for persistent fouling. The Oldham Athletic defender felt he had done nothing wrong but was hit with a year-long ban by the FA due to the game being stopped over his refusal to leave the pitch.

6. Joey Barton – 13 Months

Joey Barton has never been far away from controversy, whether it’s on or off the pitch. The ex-Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder was found guilty of placing 1,260 bets on football matches between 2006-2016. These included some that he had played in. This was far from his first lengthy suspension from the sport, but his initial 18-month ban was later reduced by five months.

5. Chris Buckley – 17 Months

Chris Buckley refused to play for Aston Villa at the start of the 1912/13 campaign as he felt he was owed £250 but never received it. The Villans responded by suspending him indefinitely and reporting him to the league. His actions were later deemed illegal and he was out of action until April 1914.

4. Mykhailo Mudryk – 4 Years

Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk was shocked to hear he had been banned from playing in late 2024. It came after the banned substance meldonium was found in his system while on international duty with Ukraine. The winger is set to appeal the April 2026 decision to hand him the longest suspension in Premier League history.

3. Bradley Wood – 6 Years

Bradley Wood of Lincoln City was given a six-year ban after being found to have picked up bookings deliberately during FA Cup victories over Ipswich Town and Burnley. Seven people bet on his to pick up a yellow card, with two being close friends. Wood got a five-year suspension for the bookings and a further 12 months for other betting offences he admitted to.

2. Enoch West – 30 Years

Eight players (four Man Utd and four Liverpool) were given lifetime bans from the beautiful game for match fixing in 1915. The other seven men had their bans lifted after enlisting for the army for World War I. Enoch West refused to enlist and his ban stood until 1945, when he was 59 years old.

1. Olafur Gottskalksson – Lifetime ban

Goalkeeper Olafur Gottskalksson was chosen to give a sample when testers arrived at Torquay United’s ground in 2005. However, the Icelandic shot-stopper quickly disappeared as he knew his cocaine addiction would show up in the results. The FA banned him indefinitely and he has never played football again. Speaking about the situation, Gottskalksson said:

“It’s a real shame, I saw nothing else in the situation but to let myself go.

“I went to the Netherlands. Just took the next plane to Amsterdam and was there for a week, 10 days in total oblivion. I was advertised as missing in the papers here at home and didn’t realise what I was doing to the people here at home. You only listen to your own bulls**t.”

Supercomputer Predicts 2026-27 Championship Table

Published

on

By

After being simulated 10,000 times following Thursday’s fixture release day, the final 2026/27 Championship table has been predicted in full by a supercomputer. West Ham, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers dropped into English football’s second tier after suffering relegation from the Premier League last season.

That trio – which, for the first time in four years, was not made up of the same three clubs that had won promotion the season before – will all be desperate to bounce straight back at the first attempt. Meanwhile, Lincoln City, Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers would surely be more than content with consolidation after securing their Championship status on the back of impressive League One campaigns. For those clubs, simply keeping their heads above water and establishing themselves at a higher level may be viewed as success.

However, if the supercomputer’s projections, courtesy of Parimatch UK Sportsbook, are to be believed, there could be plenty of twists and turns ahead. The Championship rarely follows a script and has a habit of throwing up surprises when least expected, and this predicted final table suggests several clubs may be in for a rollercoaster ride. In fact, the standings look markedly different from how many supporters and pundits would have expected the season to unfold.

Relegation Places

Unfortunately for Lincoln City, they are the only club who are riding the crest of promotion that are tipped to be taken straight back down 12 months on. They are set for a tough campaign, having lost manager Michael Skubala to Bristol City in the off-season, with them predicted to earn just eight wins. That’s just one and two fewer than Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers in 23rd and 22nd respectively.

The latter of that relegated trio have been hanging by a thread in a constant dogfight in recent years. Financial issues continue to take their toll on Rovers, and it appears 2027 finally sees them drop another level, 32 years on from winning the Premier League. Just four points will separate them from Portsmouth, another struggling former topflight side.

Bolton Wanderers, Queen’s Park Rangers, and Cardiff City are also tipped to feel the fear of the dotted line creeping up on them at various stages of the seasons, though they are expected to keep themselves safe. With nine poitns separating 18th from 21st, nobody in the bottom half will be able to rest on their laurels.

Mid-table Security

Stoke City Peter Powell via Reuters

It seems a little unfair that Arsenal won the Premier League title last season using many of the same dark arts that Stoke City employed under Tony Pulis in the 2010s – the very style of football that helped inspire the famous hypothetical question: “Could Lionel Messi do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke?” Yet while Arsenal have climbed to the summit, the Potters now find themselves stuck in Championship midtable, far removed from their days of rubbing shoulders with the elite.

Still, a 15th-place finish would represent an improvement of two positions on last season, proving there may at least be light at the end of the tunnel. Mark Robins’ side are predicted to finish three points above Watford, with the Hornets – who boast one of football’s most famous supporters in Elton John – ending the campaign in 17th. Preston North End are forecast to come in 16th on 55 points.

Just above the Potters in 14th are Tom Brady-owned Birmingham City, while Bristol City, Derby County and Swansea City round out a cluster of sides seemingly destined for a season of treading water. Barring a surprise run, all four look set to drift through the campaign with little danger of either a promotion charge or a relegation battle.

Race For Playoffs

Not only does the supercomputer predict that Wrexham will make the play-offs, punching well above their weight to finish sixth, it also believes they will find the tournament know-how to go all the way at Wembley and complete an incredible fourth promotion in five seasons, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ fairytale showing no signs of slowing down.

They are tipped to beat Southampton over two legs in the semi-finals before facing either Burnley or Middlesbrough in the final. All three of those clubs have recent Premier League experience and significantly greater resources, but Hollywood has a habit of rewriting the script when it comes to the Welsh side.

Finishing on 76 points, the Welsh side are projected to win one more match than Millwall and pip them to sixth place, while Sheffield United are tipped to fall just short on 71 points. Norwich City and West Brom round out the group chasing what would be an increasingly unlikely play-off spot.

The Canaries redefined what it meant to be a yo-yo club during the days of Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki, bouncing between the Championship and Premier League with remarkable regularity. However, they have not returned to the top flight since their relegation during the pandemic-affected campaign in 2020, and the financial landscape in Norfolk is no longer what it once was after years away from the lucrative parachute payments.

Jarrod Bowen | West Ham

West Ham, Europa Conference League winners just two seasons ago, are tipped to go straight back, finishing on 92 points. With Jarrod Bowen expected to find it difficult leaving given his relationship with the Dyer family, he could be able to drag the Hammers back up single-handedly in some cases, with the east Londoners tipped to score 40 more goals than they concede.

There’s no surprise that Wolves follow them closely on 88 points. They boast an enviable mix of youthful excitement and older wiser players, so with the resources at their disposal, it would be a shock if they didn’t get that automatic promotion place.

Arsenal Plotting Move to Sign Alex Scott After Morgan Rogers

Published

on

By

Arsenal are among a group of teams following a move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, as David Ornstein gives an update on the pursuit of the England international.

The Gunners are looking at potential midfield additions this summer, as they monitor options who can compete with the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the middle.

An exit for Christian Norgaard could help prompt a signing, with links to Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes emerging over the course of the summer transfer window so far.

Arsenal are keeping their options open, however, and it appears as though Premier League star Scott is on the club’s radar as a potential addition.

Another option on Arsenal’s radar this summer is Alex Scott, the Bournemouth star who has shown plenty of quality over the past season or so.

The Cherries midfielder has been linked with an £80 million exit in the transfer window, with a separate source saying £60m could be enough for a deal, even with talks of a potential contract extension on the cards in the coming weeks.

On a potential move, David Ornstein gave an update on The Athletic FC Podcast, and said: “Scott’s a brilliant player, and it’s no surprise that clubs are looking at him.

“Arsenal really like him, and Manchester United do as well.”

However, a deal may be difficult, as he adds: “And I’m sure he would have a host of suitors if it was possible to get him, and I say that very purposefully, because if being the key word here, Bournemouth have no intention of selling him, that’s the word coming from the club.

“Even if it was an astronomical offer, they are adamant that he is staying put for the first season, at least, of Marco Rose. An interesting element is that his contract is starting to wind down, and I’m sure they would like to renew it, but if there’s a possibility of the move, I’m not sure he would be in favor of an extension at this point.

“And so, yeah, he’s been discussed at Arsenal and Manchester United, and no doubt elsewhere,”

It suggests any deal this summer could prove difficult to do, though the contract situation does offer some leverage. It remains to be seen whether that will see Arsenal switch targets, or whether they will find a way to push through in hopes of a breakthrough in proceedings.

With a transfer for Scott seeming unlikely as a result of Bournemouth’s stance, focus may well need to shift elsewhere for Arsenal in the transfer market.

Other transfer options may be tough to line up, as Tonali and Fernandes appear to be advancing on moves elsewhere in the Premier League this summer.

Romano: Arsenal Make Contact to Sign ‘Europe’s Most Wanted Striker’

Arsenal have enquired about a possible deal this summer for a target who has been described as a “dream signing”.

That said, the Gunners have been linked with a move for Ayyoub Bouaddi, who has impressed for Morocco at the World Cup and appears to be an option for the future.

Manu Kone remains another interesting transfer link, with the AS Roma midfielder seemingly available in the market.

However, it remains to be seen who Arsenal could look at next for their midfield addition.

Tottenham Make Contact With Chelsea For Liam Delap

Published

Tottenham have made contact over a move for a Chelsea star this summer, according to TeamTalk, as the club ramp up their efforts to land another player in a busy transfer window.

So far, the Lilywhites have been the busiest team in the Premier League, making four quickfire signings to begin Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild in style.

The defence and goalkeeping ranks have been reinforced heavily so far, meaning attention can quickly turn towards other areas of interest.

The midfield is one, as talks for Sandro Tonali ramp up, while reports claim that an agreement has been reached to sign Mateus Fernandes this summer.

Then there’s the forward ranks. A winger or two could be on the cards, but so could a striker, who may offer something more up front.

Tottenham Explore Liam Delap Transfer

A striker signing could be on the cards this summer, as TeamTalk reports that Tottenham have made enquiries over a move for Liam Delap.

The 23-year-old only moved to Stamford Bridge last year, but struggled to make an impact as he scored just twice across all competitions for the Blues.

That was off the back of a successful Premier League campaign with Ipswich Town, where he was described as a “beast”, but he appeared unable to tap into that side of him over the previous year.

A mixture of injuries, discipline, and poor form all played into Delap’s struggles, and he is now facing the possibility of leaving Chelsea after a short stay with the club.

Tottenham are believed to be one of the teams in the mix, though no concrete move has been made yet, while other Premier League rivals muscle in on the conversation.

Newcastle and Everton are claimed to have interest in the forward, and could look to explore a potential deal in the coming weeks of the transfer market.

Chelsea are looking for a £40 million fee to let Delap leave, a transfer valuation that may put some suitors off after his £30 million move last year.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will push on to complete a move, but they appear to be in the mix.

A move for Delap would be an interesting one for Tottenham, though it may not get many favourable glances from fans looking at the potential deal.

The struggles of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison suggests that a striker addition would be welcomed, but the Chelsea man may not be the most glamorous of arrivals.

At times he has struggled with the pace of the game for the Blues, particularly from the bench, and when he has imposed himself physically, it has often looked messy – see the challenge on Djed Spence for more proof of that.

Tottenham Reach Verbal Agreement With Club to Complete Fifth Summer Signing

Tottenham are closing in on another summer signing, as talks ramp up over a huge deal.

However, during his season with Ipswich, there was clearly some potential there. If Spurs can grab Delap on a bargain transfer fee, then there is a chance to rediscover that ability and come out as winners.

But it remains to be seen whether that is a distinct possibility.
