Man Utd in Pole Position to Sign Morten Hjulmand as Man City Leave Race
Manchester United have exploded into pole position to sign a top-flight midfield star after rivals Manchester City decided to focus on another target instead, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Manchester United could confirm their return to the Champions League this weekend, and it might happen before they even kick off against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Brighton and Hove Albion and Bournemouth are the only clubs who can prevent the Red Devils finishing in the top five now, although if both fail to win then Michael Carrick’s side return to Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since they were eliminated in 2023 will be confirmed.
The Seagulls face Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday, before the Cherries host Crystal Palace at the Vitality Stadium just hours before United kick off against Arne Slot’s visitors.
Whenever Champions League football next term is confirmed for United, it will allow club chiefs to start formalising plans for who their next permanent manager will be, along with beginning to make progress on the summer transfer targets they will move for.
Carrick appears to be in a good position to get the job after his successful caretaker spell, although it has been suggested that Andoni Iraola is emerging as his ‘strongest’ rival for the role.
Man United in ‘Pole Position’ to Sign Morten Hjulmand Ahead of Man City
According to A Bola, Unitedare now leading the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand this summer.
The report says that while Manchester City were long considered the strongest suitors for the Denmark international, it is now United who have jumped into pole position for his signature with City instead focusing on a deal to sign Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
Ironically, Anderson is also the top target for the Red Devils, according to GIVEMESPORT sources, although there is a feeling he would prefer a move to the Etihad if both options were on the table.
United are now said to have a clear path to get the 26-year-old Dane, who received rave reviews from former manager Ruben Amorim during his tenure at Old Trafford.
With Casemiro leaving at the end of the season, A Bola claim that United see Hjulmand as the ideal successor to provide balance and leadership.
Hjulmand Will be Sold for Lower Than Release Clause
The report also claims that even though Hjulmand’s release clause stands at €80m, his exit could be done for a much lower fee thanks to a verbal agreement between the club and their captain.
That fee is claimed to be between €40-50m, which would see Hjulmand expect club chiefs to at least enter the negotiating table over a move.
That fee could be attractive to United as they continue to be quoted large asking prices for their targets based in the Premier League, like Anderson, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Arsenal Plotting Move to Sign Alex Scott After Morgan Rogers
Arsenal are among a group of teams following a move for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, as David Ornstein gives an update on the pursuit of the England international.
The Gunners are looking at potential midfield additions this summer, as they monitor options who can compete with the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the middle.
An exit for Christian Norgaard could help prompt a signing, with links to Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes emerging over the course of the summer transfer window so far.
Arsenal are keeping their options open, however, and it appears as though Premier League star Scott is on the club’s radar as a potential addition.
Arsenal Eye Alex Scott Transfer
Another option on Arsenal’s radar this summer is Alex Scott, the Bournemouth star who has shown plenty of quality over the past season or so.
The Cherries midfielder has been linked with an £80 million exit in the transfer window, with a separate source saying £60m could be enough for a deal, even with talks of a potential contract extension on the cards in the coming weeks.
On a potential move, David Ornstein gave an update on The Athletic FC Podcast, and said: “Scott’s a brilliant player, and it’s no surprise that clubs are looking at him.
“Arsenal really like him, and Manchester United do as well.”
However, a deal may be difficult, as he adds: “And I’m sure he would have a host of suitors if it was possible to get him, and I say that very purposefully, because if being the key word here, Bournemouth have no intention of selling him, that’s the word coming from the club.
“Even if it was an astronomical offer, they are adamant that he is staying put for the first season, at least, of Marco Rose. An interesting element is that his contract is starting to wind down, and I’m sure they would like to renew it, but if there’s a possibility of the move, I’m not sure he would be in favor of an extension at this point.
“And so, yeah, he’s been discussed at Arsenal and Manchester United, and no doubt elsewhere,”
It suggests any deal this summer could prove difficult to do, though the contract situation does offer some leverage. It remains to be seen whether that will see Arsenal switch targets, or whether they will find a way to push through in hopes of a breakthrough in proceedings.

Other Arsenal Midfield Options
With a transfer for Scott seeming unlikely as a result of Bournemouth’s stance, focus may well need to shift elsewhere for Arsenal in the transfer market.
Other transfer options may be tough to line up, as Tonali and Fernandes appear to be advancing on moves elsewhere in the Premier League this summer.
Romano: Arsenal Make Contact to Sign ‘Europe’s Most Wanted Striker’
Arsenal have enquired about a possible deal this summer for a target who has been described as a “dream signing”.
That said, the Gunners have been linked with a move for Ayyoub Bouaddi, who has impressed for Morocco at the World Cup and appears to be an option for the future.
Manu Kone remains another interesting transfer link, with the AS Roma midfielder seemingly available in the market.
However, it remains to be seen who Arsenal could look at next for their midfield addition.

Tottenham Make Contact With Chelsea For Liam Delap
Tottenham have made contact over a move for a Chelsea star this summer, according to TeamTalk, as the club ramp up their efforts to land another player in a busy transfer window.
So far, the Lilywhites have been the busiest team in the Premier League, making four quickfire signings to begin Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild in style.
The defence and goalkeeping ranks have been reinforced heavily so far, meaning attention can quickly turn towards other areas of interest.
The midfield is one, as talks for Sandro Tonali ramp up, while reports claim that an agreement has been reached to sign Mateus Fernandes this summer.
Then there’s the forward ranks. A winger or two could be on the cards, but so could a striker, who may offer something more up front.
Tottenham Explore Liam Delap Transfer
A striker signing could be on the cards this summer, as TeamTalk reports that Tottenham have made enquiries over a move for Liam Delap.
The 23-year-old only moved to Stamford Bridge last year, but struggled to make an impact as he scored just twice across all competitions for the Blues.
That was off the back of a successful Premier League campaign with Ipswich Town, where he was described as a “beast”, but he appeared unable to tap into that side of him over the previous year.
A mixture of injuries, discipline, and poor form all played into Delap’s struggles, and he is now facing the possibility of leaving Chelsea after a short stay with the club.
Tottenham are believed to be one of the teams in the mix, though no concrete move has been made yet, while other Premier League rivals muscle in on the conversation.
Newcastle and Everton are claimed to have interest in the forward, and could look to explore a potential deal in the coming weeks of the transfer market.
Chelsea are looking for a £40 million fee to let Delap leave, a transfer valuation that may put some suitors off after his £30 million move last year.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will push on to complete a move, but they appear to be in the mix.

Could Tottenham Reboot Delap?
A move for Delap would be an interesting one for Tottenham, though it may not get many favourable glances from fans looking at the potential deal.
The struggles of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison suggests that a striker addition would be welcomed, but the Chelsea man may not be the most glamorous of arrivals.
At times he has struggled with the pace of the game for the Blues, particularly from the bench, and when he has imposed himself physically, it has often looked messy – see the challenge on Djed Spence for more proof of that.
Tottenham Reach Verbal Agreement With Club to Complete Fifth Summer Signing
Tottenham are closing in on another summer signing, as talks ramp up over a huge deal.
However, during his season with Ipswich, there was clearly some potential there. If Spurs can grab Delap on a bargain transfer fee, then there is a chance to rediscover that ability and come out as winners.
But it remains to be seen whether that is a distinct possibility.

Man Utd Open Talks to Sign Julian Alvarez With Swap Deal Mooted
Manchester United have started talks with Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez and his agents over a summer move to Old Trafford, according to journalist Marcos Duran, with a potential swap deal even mooted.
Man United‘s main focus so far in the summer transfer window has been on strengthening their midfield, with one deal set to be officially completed next month.
The Red Devils have already agreed a fee with Atalanta and personal terms with Ederson, who is expected to seal his move to Old Trafford next month after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
Having found moves to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest or Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid too difficult to advance, club chiefs quickly identified Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United as their leading target.
Despite the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, they are in no mood to sell the 21-year-old on the cheap and are demanding between £80-85m for his services, which is double what they paid Southampton for the Portugal international 12 months ago.
The price is proving an issue even though the player is keen on the switch to link up with compatriot Bruno Fernandes at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, while Tottenham Hotspur’s increasing interest in the player is a problem as they are said to be willing to meet their London neighbours’ financial demands.
United are also looking at other positions too, including the centre-forward spot.
Man United Speak Directly With Julian Alvarez Agents
Samuel Luckhurst reported on Wednesday that United buying a new striker this summer is essential, as they can’t afford to rely on Joshua Zirkzee as a back-up to Benjamin Sesko ahead of their return to the Champions League.
La Liga giants Real Madrid, who had a £130m bid rejected, and Barcelona have both shown interest in prising Julian Alvarez away from Atletico this summer, with the player publicly saying this week that he wants to leave.
Now, Marcos Duran says that a second Premier League club, after Arsenal, in Manchester United have made contact with the Argentina international’s agents over a move.
The journalist says that United are ready to show ambition following their return to the Champions League, but hints that they are unlikely to be viewed as the star’s preferred club.

United Swap Deal Discussed
In a separate post on X, Duran also claims that Atletico and Diego Simeone have an interest in ‘several’ United players, with talks already held for one of them.
A potential swap deal is suggested then, but a move for Alvarez to join United remains ‘complicated’ because of the player’s desire to explore moves to the other clubs interested in his services instead.
Given Real have already had a £130m bid rejected, the Red Devils would need to obliterate their transfer record to bring the Argentine to Old Trafford.
