The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with separate incidents of culpable homicide and the recent violent unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday evening.

According to the statement, one suspect was arrested over the alleged killing of a 20-year-old man following a dispute in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area.

The command said the incident occurred on Monday at about 10:30 a.m. when a misunderstanding between two men reportedly escalated into violence.

“The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim on the chest with a sharp metal object known as Danbuda. The victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment,” the statement said.

Police identified the suspect as Saminu Ibrahim, 20, of Gidan Gona village in Ringim LGA. He is currently in custody as investigations continue before his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In a separate development, the command said it arrested two suspects linked to the violent unrest that broke out at Gujungu Market on July 26.

The disturbance reportedly began after an altercation between a soldier and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim, from Miga Local Government Area. Police said the soldier allegedly stabbed Ibrahim during the confrontation, and the victim later died from his injuries.

The incident triggered unrest in the market, with hoodlums allegedly attacking a police station, firing bows and arrows at security personnel and setting two shops ablaze.

Police said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa LGA, and Faridu Mohammed, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend others who fled the scene.

The command also announced the arrest of six additional suspects over the killing of a vigilante member during the aftermath of the market violence.

According to police, the suspects allegedly attacked two vigilante operatives with sticks and cutlasses on August 2. One of the victims later died from injuries sustained in the assault, while the second victim is receiving treatment at a medical facility.

The six suspects were identified as Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, all from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Jahun local government areas.

Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest.

The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the police disclosed that a stakeholder engagement involving members of Miyetti Allah, traditional and religious leaders, youth representatives, security agencies and other community stakeholders was underway to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market crisis and prevent future occurrences.

The Borno State Police Command has arrested five persons suspected of processing and distributing meat from dead cattle for sale to members of the public in Maiduguri.

The suspects were arrested on July 29, 2026, by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, also known as the Crack Squad, following intelligence reports on the alleged activity at the Old Maiduguri Cattle Market.

Police identified the suspects as Modu Umar, 43, Abba Mohammed, 24, Adam Abubakar, 21, Faruq Gambo, 19, and Mada Usman, 24.

According to the Command, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly obtained cattle that had died, butchered the carcasses and supplied the meat to roadside vendors for resale to unsuspecting consumers.

The police said the suspects were apprehended while allegedly transporting the carcass of a dead cow to the Morumti area of Maiduguri, where it was reportedly intended for further processing and distribution.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said investigations were ongoing to determine the scale of the operation.

“The suspects are currently in police custody while discreet investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the activity, trace the intended distribution network, identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected with the alleged practice,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, condemned the alleged sale of meat from dead animals, warning that such practices pose serious risks to public health.

He said the Command would continue to work with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to curb the sale of unwholesome meat and protect consumers across the state.

The Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced Bethel Onyedikachi Ukachukwu to two years imprisonment for defrauding a resident of N500,000 under the guise of securing a Nigeria Customs Service auction vehicle.

Justice Lekan Ogunmoye delivered the judgment on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after convicting Ukachukwu on charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, through its Ekiti Zonal Directorate, arraigned the defendant on an amended three-count charge.

The anti-graft agency said the convict obtained ₦500,000 from Mr. Kayode Aina Samuel after claiming he would use the money to secure an auctioned vehicle from the Nigeria Customs Service.

One of the charges reads, “That you, Bethel Onyekachi Ukachukwu, sometimes in 15th April 2026 at Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable court with intent to defraud and obtain the total sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only (N500,000.00) from one Kayode Aina Samuel under the pretext that you will use the same money to bid for an auction car for him with Nigeria Customs Service which pretext you knew to be false which goes contrary to Section (1) (b) and 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.”

Another count reads, “That Bethel Onyekachi Ukachukwu on or about the 15th day of April 2026 at Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable court, did dishonestly convert to your own use the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only (N500,000.00) being the property of Mr. Kayode Aina Samuel which was entrusted to you for the specific purpose of purchasing a motor vehicle on his behalf and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 295 (2)(f) and punishable under section 302 (1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges.
Following the plea, prosecution counsel Saidu Yusuf called the first prosecution witness, Emmanuel Onuminya, tendered exhibits and other evidence before the court, and urged the court to convict the defendant.

Defence counsel, T.A. Salami, pleaded for leniency, telling the court that the convict was remorseful and had refunded the petitioner.

Justice Ogunmoye thereafter sentenced Ukachukwu to two years imprisonment, with an option of a ₦150,000 fine.

The EFCC said the convict’s ordeal began after he falsely posed as a Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army and collected ₦500,000 from the petitioner on the promise of securing a Nigeria Customs Service auction vehicle.

However, he neither delivered the vehicle nor refunded the money. He has since been remanded at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre.
