Sir Alex Ferguson Wanted To Sign Xabi Alonso at Man Utd

Published

on

Ask any modern Premier League manager, and they will point to Sir Alex Ferguson as an aspirational figure. After all, the Manchester United legend has won the competition more times than any other coach.

Beyond those 13 league titles, he left a huge imprint on British football with his fiery personality, which always helped drive him to more success. His ruthless nature allowed him to freshen both playing and coaching staff as he built and rebuilt numerous trophy-winning sides during his 26 years at Old Trafford.

Ferguson certainly knew how to replace top talent. For instance, he was able to sign Michael Carrick in 2006, as Roy Keane departed. The Englishman was a hit, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League, and is now set to be appointed the club’s next permanent manager.

But Ferguson also had his eye on another Premier League coach during his time at Man Utd, but he couldn’t get a deal for the player across the line.

Ferguson Wanted to Bring Liverpool Icon to Old Trafford

Sir Alex Ferguson

Way back in 2003, the Manchester United boss let slip that he had his eye on a young Spanish midfielder. That player just so happened to be Xabi Alonso. Confirming his interest in the Real Sociedad star to the press, Ferguson said:

“Alonso’s contract runs until 2007 but we have been told there is a £20m buy-out clause. But we understand that Madrid have offered a down payment of £10m and that they are prepared to let him stay at Sociedad next season.”

Alonso would end up in England, but signed for rivals Liverpool in 2004 instead. Ferguson once again publicly disclosed his interest in the player, noting: “We had a look at Alonso for a while, but our priorities changed a little bit.”

The Spaniard went on to prove himself as a top player at Anfield, winning both the Champions League and the FA Cup during his five years with the Reds. He then left in 2009, with Real Madrid eventually getting their long-term target.

Back in Spain, Alonso would lift La Liga, another Champions League, and two Copa del Rey trophies, before ending his career with three Bundesliga titles at Bayern Munich. He also won the European Championship in both 2008 and 2012, while his crowning career moment came as he lifted the 2010 World Cup.

Having had such a fine club career at Liverpool, many expected he’d return to Anfield as a coach. But instead, Chelsea have moved in and landed Alonso. Upon joining the Blues, he said: “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

While things didn’t go smoothly for Alonso during his seven-month spell at Real Madrid, he does come with a big reputation. That was mostly built off his time with Bayer Leverkusen, where he won a domestic double in 2024, most notably going the entire league season without losing a single game, as he delivered the club’s first Bundesliga title.

It will be interesting to see how he gets on now at Chelsea, as he gets a first taste of Premier League management.

Every Premier League Club’s Prize Money For Final 25/26 Positions

The Premier League season is over, and while the final day failed to deliver the drama that many fans have been used to in recent years, the table finished largely as it was going into the final matches of the season.

Arsenal were already confirmed as champions, the European places had settled, and the only real movement at the top end of the table would have required a series of results that would’ve defied all the odds.

The one story that had any hope of producing drama was in the battle for survival. With Wolves and Burnley already doomed to the Championship weeks ago, West Ham needed to win and hope Tottenham slipped up at home to Everton in order to move out of 18th place.

The Hammers did their part, beating Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium. But Joao Palhinha’s goal was enough to give Spurs a 1-0 win over Everton, and in doing so confirmed West Ham’s relegation. It was a painful end to a difficult season for a club that lifted the Europa Conference League just three years ago.

With the final positions now confirmed, all 20 clubs will receive their share of the Premier League’s merit prize money, distributed based on where they finish in the table.

Wolves finished bottom of the pile, collecting just £2.7 million in merit prize money, a figure that highlights the financial devastation that accompanies relegation. Wolves themselves have had serious financial issues in recent years, with a need to sell their best players year-on-year, without replacing them, a key reason for their drop to the Championship.

Burnley join them in the bottom two on £5.4 million, while West Ham, whose relegation was the last to be confirmed, receive just £8.1 million.

Tottenham, who survived by the skin of their teeth, take home £10.8 million, a figure that their fans will hardly care for given how priceless Premier League survival is. Europa League semi-finalists, Nottingham Forest, round out the bottom five with £13.5 million.

Leeds United, in their first season back in the top-flight after promotion, take home £18.9 million for 14th, a respectable return for a newly promoted side finding their feet again at the top level. Everton scooped £21.6 million for 13th, completing their first ever Premier League season away from Goodison Park.

Newcastle’s £24.3 million return for a 12th-place finish will make for uncomfortable reading at St James’ Park. Given their ambitions and investment that’ve gone into the club in recent years, Eddie Howe is now facing calls for his sacking, and many of their top players are linked with moves away. Fulham round out the group with £27 million for an 11th-place finish.

Chelsea’s 10th-place finish, their second-worst in the Premier League, and £29.7 million payout represent another disappointing return for the reigning Club World Cup champions. They’ve spent mind-blowing sums of money in recent transfer windows, but Xabi Alonso will have to make do with taking over a club with a smaller budget in the summer, with European football and the revenue that comes with it now out of the window.

Brentford’s £32.4 million for ninth reflects another solid season from a club consistently punching above their weight. Brighton collected £35.1 million for eighth, while Sunderland’s seventh-place finish and £37.8 million payout is the success story of this section, back in the Premier League for the first time in years and finishing higher than anyone would’ve predicted.

Bournemouth finished sixth and grabbed £40.5 million, another remarkable season from a club that continues to exceed expectations, but they’ll go into next season and their first-ever European campaign with Marco Rose in charge, who replaces Andoni Iraola, who’s heavily tipped to take the Newcastle job if Eddie Howe is given his marching orders.

Liverpool’s fifth-place finish yields £43.2 million, though the mood at Anfield will be one of reflection rather than celebration, given the standards they’d set in recent seasons. Mohamed Salah has played his final match for the Reds and they will need to try and restore their challenge at the very top of the league without their all-time highest scorer in the Premier League.

Europa League champions Aston Villa collect £45.9 million for fourth place, securing Champions League football for a second time in three seasons. Manchester United’s third-place finish under Michael Carrick earns them £48.6 million and a Champions League spot, a significant turnaround from earlier in the season under Ruben Amorim. United’s Bruno Fernandes made history on the final day, taking the all-time assist record for himself and earning Premier League Player of the Season honours.

Manchester City take £51.3 million for second. Despite winning an FA Cup and League Cup double, the Premier League title was the one City fans would have wanted to win before waving goodbye to Pep Guardiola.

And Arsenal, the champions, collect the maximum merit prize money of £54 million, a fitting financial reward for a title-winning season that ended a 22-year wait. It could yet get better and more lucrative for the Gunners, who’ll play in the Champions League final against PSG a week after lifting the trophy.

Man Utd Confident of Signing Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali

Manchester United are now confident of securing a deal to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window, and he could be a better option for Michael Carrick than Ederson.

The Red Devils have been working on bringing in at least one new midfielder in the summer as they prepare for the 2026-2027 season in Europe.

Signing at least one midfielder is likely to be a major priority, and they’ve already been linked with a host of players before the window has even opened.

United fans will likely be looking forward to this window approaching, given they are likely to bring in a host of new additions.

The Red Devils need more Champions League-level players in the squad if they are going to compete on all fronts next season.

Man Utd Have Strong Chance of Signing Midfielder

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick looks on after Premier League win against Nottingham Forest

According to a report from Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, there is a good chance Manchester United will secure the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali in the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed that there’s a gentleman’s agreement with Newcastle that Tonali can leave the club should they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The Magpies are finished in the bottom half, so a departure for Tonali is on the cards in the summer.

Di Marzio suggests that Newcastle could demand in the region of £86m to allow him to leave the club, and United appear to be relatively happy to pay that sort of figure for a new midfielder.

Tonali Better Than Ederson

Sandro Tonali

If there is a choice between signing Sandro Tonali or Atalanta midfielder Ederson, United need to bring in Tonali in the summer transfer window.

Tonali, described as ‘one of the best CMs in the world’, already has plenty of Premier League experience, and he’s shown that he’s capable of playing at the highest level, including in the Champions League.

Ederson could be a smart addition for United, but there’s no doubt Tonali is on another level than the Brazilian midfielder.

Tonali would be a game-changing addition for the Red Devils, even if they have to pay a huge fee to bring him to the club later this year.

Tottenham Set to Sign Liverpool’s Andy Robertson After Premier League Survival

Tottenham are now set to secure their first signing of the summer after their place in next season’s Premier League was confirmed.

The work starts now for Roberto De Zerbi, and Tottenham as they look to head back in the right direction after a dismal few years.

The summer transfer window is the opportunity for them to rebuild and go again, as they can’t afford to be battling for relegation anymore.

A host of players are likely to leave the club, but that also means they will bring in a load of new additions.

It could be one of Tottenham’s busiest windows in their recent history, as many players will be wanting to leave due to a lack of European football.

Spurs will also need to strengthen after such a poor run, so we could see a number of incomings and outgoings this summer.

Tottenham to Secure First Summer Signing

Roberto De Zerbi

According to GIVEMESPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is set to join Tottenham now their Premier League status is secure.

Robertson, described as ‘elite’, is set to be a free agent, with his contract at Liverpool expiring.

The Scottish international said goodbye to Liverpool fans at Anfield on Sunday, with him and Mohamed Salah both leaving the club.

Tottenham looked to secure Robertson earlier in the year, but with Spurs battling to stay in the Premier League, a deal wasn’t guaranteed.

Strong Start to Window for Tottenham

Securing the signature of Robertson on a free transfer is a strong start to the summer transfer window for Tottenham.

The Scottish left-back will bring plenty of Premier League experience to the club and a winning mentality after securing a host of trophies during his time at Anfield.

Although he is coming to the end of his career, there is no doubt he can still offer something in the Premier League, both on and off the pitch.

Tottenham certainly can’t stop there, though, as they need to bring in a host of players all over the pitch in order to head back in the right direction.
