George Russell’s First Tweet After Being Fined €5,000 For His Canadian GP Actions

Published

on

If you’d have asked George Russell to rate his weekend prior to lights out for the Canadian Grand Prix, he’d probably have been elated.

He converted his Sprint pole to victory in the inaugural Sprint Race in Montreal, fending off his teenage teammate and championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, though, the young Italian felt that Russell had forced him off during the course of their tussle. He’d also finished second in the sole practice session of the weekend, with Antonelli the only one that was faster.

Then the Brit took pole for the race, pipping Antonelli by just 0.068 seconds, with the Italian consigned to second place. Russell’s pole had at one stage seemed unlikely. He was forced to abort his first attempt as he suffered a snap of oversteer going through turn six. But, as Q3 was coming to an end, he found pace and posted an electrifying 1 minute 12.578 seconds, less than one-tenth clear of his younger teammate.

After an extra two formation laps, while Arvid Lindblad’s stricken Racing Bulls car was moved following a clutch issue, it was time to go racing.

An incredible launch by Lando Norris sent him alongside the Mercedes pair of Russell and Antonelli before he powered his McLaren into the lead. This sent Russell into third behind his teammate, with his former teammate Lewis Hamilton behind him in fourth after the Ferrari man had overtaken the McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Following pitstops for both McLarens, Russell and Antonelli began an exhilarating skirmish for first place, which saw the latter lock-up and almost collide with the 28-year-old as he left the track. The young Italian flat-spotted his tyres, which caused him to fall behind by one second.

Red Bull’s Savage Tweet After George Russell’s Tantrum at Canadian GP

The social media team over at Red Bull clearly enjoyed watching the Mercedes man’s meltdown.

Russell would then lock up himself, with Antonelli seizing the opportunity to overtake, albeit temporarily, as the Brit was able to retake the position.

The fight would continue, a gripping watch for Formula 1 fans, but a terrifying one for Mercedes, who surely felt contact was inevitable.

Russell locked up once more, which allowed Antonelli to go side-by-side, but the King’s Lynn driver reacted quickly, holding onto the position and forcing his adversary to brake and back out of the move.

On lap 24, their scuffle went to new heights. The 19-year-old locked up, allowing the more experienced Russell to return to P1. Not content with second, Antonelli attempted an overtake but ran wide, leaving the track and rejoining in front of his teammate. The pair had brushed wheels in the incident but avoided any major damage. Antonelli was told to return the position, much to his displeasure as he felt he’d been pushed off.

Russell’s Race Ended Prematurely

But Russell’s formidable weekend ground to a halt on lap 30, as he was forced to stop his car on track with a power unit failure, relinquishing P1 to Antonelli. The Brit was understandably inconsolable, furiously slamming his fists on the car and throwing the head restraint. He then watched the marshals clear his car from the side of the track, shaking his head in disappointment.

Antonelli would go on to win the race untroubled. He was 4.6 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen after pitting for medium tyres under the Virtual Safety Car.

AI Predicts Final 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship Standings

AI has made its prediction after the opening five races of the 2026 season.

Antonelli has now extended his championship lead over Russell by 43 points following the Brit’s retirement. The latter will be hoping to take inspiration from his old friend Norris, however, who took the championship win in 2025 with a fantastic resurgence despite Piastri leading for 15 consecutive race weekends.

Russell’s Reaction to Canadian GP Actions

Posting on X, Russell appeared in susprisingly high spirits, stating: “Lost for words breaking down from the lead! Really loved the battle with Kimi [Antonelli] and wished to have had 40 more of those laps!

“Proud of my weekend in Canada otherwise with pole in the sprint, sprint race win, pole yesterday and leading the race today. Bring on the next race.”

Overall, Russell had an impressive weekend in Montreal at a track he seems to like. He has taken two previous poles in Quebec and converted his pole into a win in 2025 in a race marred by McLaren title drama, in which Norris’ ambitious move on Piastri caused the Brit to DNF.

With much of the season up for grabs and nothing impossible, it could still be Russell who is crowned the 2026 world champion, but if he’s to take his maiden championship, he’ll be hoping the car achieves full race distance next time.

With the iconic Monaco beginning the European part of the calendar, Russell needs to carry over some of this momentum and use his frustration to fuel him. But Antonelli won’t take the challenge lightly.

Tottenham Set To Confirm Double Deal For De Zerbi

Tottenham are poised to make two new signings after securing their Premier League status.

GIVEMESPORT understands an agreement in principle is in place to sign Andy Robertson following his departure from Liverpool. The 32-year-old agreed terms in January, but Liverpool couldn’t source a replacement and the Scotland international did not want to leave Anfield unless it also suited the club.

Robertson played his final game for Liverpool on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Brentford that secured Champions League football for next season.

When Robertson transfer could be confirmed

Spurs are now expected to sign him on a free transfer and the deal could be formalised before Robertson heads off to the World Cup with Scotland.

The signing was always contingent on Spurs staying in the Premier League, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side surviving courtesy of a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day.

Robertson is of appeal not only due to his Premier League experience and leadership, but his character as well. He made 378 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 14 times and was one of the most popular players in the dressing room.

Spurs are also favourites to sign Marcos Senesi on a free transfer. The 29-year-old left Bournemouth on a free transfer despite the Cherries qualifying for the Europa League via a sixth-placed finish.

Senesi had informed Bournemouth he wanted a fresh challenge last year and turned down multiple contract offers as a result.

Terms are in place with Spurs with Senesi making it clear to all European suitors his preference is to remain in the Premier League.

Two other clubs have been chasing Senesi

Manchester United have also considered Senesi, while Liverpool have been weighing up whether to enter the race. As it stands, Spurs are hoping to formalise Senesi quickly in order to avoid any surprises.

Senesi has had another outstanding season for Bournemouth making 37 appearances in all competitions and playing a pivotal role in Bournemouth gaining European football for the first time in their history.

Spurs staying up also boosts their chances of Micky van de Ven signing a new deal. Sources have told GMS he’s been impressed by Roberto De Zerbi.

However, there remains a realistic chance captain Cristian Romero is sold. Spurs are open to an exit on the right times, with the Argentine defender keen on a move to La Liga.

MMA Fight Between Sumo Wrestler and Professional Boxer Has Clear Winner

In what might’ve been one of the strangest fights of the year, sumo wrestler Chiyotairyu Hidemasa demonstrated the precise reason why weight-classes are required in contact sports as he dominated his MMA fight against 5-0 professional boxer Jorge Menasalvas.

The peculiar bout, which pitted the 320lbs sumo wrestler against a 192lbs boxer, was put together by Spanish promotion Dogfight Wild Tournament, for their fourth event, Tokyo Blood, in Madrid, Spain.

According to their website, their events provide “an experience where the fight breaks all traditional formats and each match takes the spectacle to the next level.”

In what was dubbed their “wildest event to date”, the other bouts included a tag-team war, a five-way last-man standing, and the first-ever rap battle that ended in a physical fight.

Chiyotairyu Hidemasa vs Jorge Menasalvas

Former top-division sumo wrestler Chiyotairyu Hidemasa (whose real name is Hidemasa Meigetsuin) traded the dohyo for the cage as he faced off in a one-of-a-kind bout. After graduating from university, Hidemasa questioned whether he should continue his sumo career or quit to become a teacher after his debut tournament in March 2011 was delayed due to a match-fixing scandal that rocked the world of sumo.

Throughout his 11-year career, Chiyotairyu managed his one and only championship in the Juryo rank, the second-highest division in professional sumo. He was also awarded a special prize (Sansho) called the Gino-sho, or technique, for his impressive 11-4 in November 2013. The sumo wrestler has also gained three gold starts, which are awarded after a lower-ranked wrestler beats a yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo wrestling, after twice-beating Harumafuji and also besting Kisenosato.

His MMA opponent came in the form of professional boxer Jorge Menasalvas, who currently boasts an unbeaten 5-0 record in the ring. The Spaniard’s first professional bout came in November 2024 with a unanimous decision victory over Diego Jair Ramirez, before Ramirez was disqualified in their rematch to hand his opponent the second win of his career. A points victory over Marius Mihai Dumitru and a first-round knockout over Leonid Arseniev meant that his unanimous decision victory over Frank Rojas in November 2025 took him to a 5-0 record.

Although Menasalvas may have had much more experience of striking, Chiyotairyu’s grappling experience from his sumo days set him in good stead going into the cage. With both fighters coming in at 6’0″, there was no real reach or height advantage for either, but the almost 130lbs in weight difference would prove to be somewhat of a determining factor.

US Marine vs British SAS Soldier Boxing Fight Ended in Savage Knockout

From the outset of the fight, it was clear that there would only be one winner. Time after time, Menasalvas was met with the terrifying sight of his almost-150kg opponent sprinting across the canvas and slamming him into the fencing, with one such instance almost completely detaching the surrounding barriers. With Menasalvas up against it, the sumo wrestler would use his grappling experience to good effect, slamming his opponent to the floor and administering multiple hammer-fists.

Following five gruelling rounds, neither fighter managed to floor their opponent for good, meaning that the bout went to the scorecards. Unsurprisingly, Chiyotairyu saw his hand raised after winning via unanimous decision.
