10 Big-Name Footballers Who Retired in 2026
The career of a professional footballer is a short one. Even at the very top level, most players are looking at around 15 to 20 years in the game if they are lucky, with 35 often seen as the point where the boots start to come off for good.
Even so, there are always exceptions. Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Luka Modric and Manuel Neuer are all well beyond the traditional retirement age for footballers, yet continue to perform at the highest level and are set to feature at the World Cup. Each of them has, at different points, been considered the best in the world in their respective positions, and while their physical sharpness may have dipped slightly with age, their quality and understanding of the game still set them apart.
For some, retirement comes with a sense of relief after years of pushing their bodies to the absolute limit. The constant cycle of training, travel and matches leaves little room for a break, and eventually the idea of life beyond football becomes more appealing than another pre-season or contract renewal.
A number of high-profile names in the 2025/26 season have decided that the time is right to bring their careers to an end.
Between them, they’ve lifted major trophies, won World Cups and European honours, and delivered countless moments in some of the biggest leagues in world football. Many have been leaders, others creative forces or defensive pillars, but all have left a lasting mark on the game.
With that in mind, we take a look at the biggest names to retire in 2026.

Cesar Azpilicueta
Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta enjoyed the bulk of his playing days at Chelsea, where he was better known by fans and team-mates alike as “Dave.” He played over 500 matches, won the Premier League twice and captained the Blues to Champions League glory in the 2020/21 season.
Despite being happy and loyal at Marseille, Azpilicueta moved from the south of France to London to help Marseille’s financial situation. After leaving Chelsea, he went back home to Spain, firstly with Atletico Madrid, and then Sevilla. It was with Sevilla where he decided to hang up his boots, calling it a day on the 22nd of May, the day before he played his final match as a professional.

Marko van Ginkel
Marco van Ginkel’s career will be remembered as one of football’s great “what if” stories.
The Dutch midfielder emerged as a highly-rated prospect at Vitesse before earning a move to Chelsea in 2013, where he was tipped to become a key figure at Stamford Bridge. However, a series of serious knee injuries repeatedly interrupted his progress, limiting his impact in England despite loan spells with AC Milan, Stoke City and PSV Eindhoven.
Van Ginkel enjoyed his most successful years with PSV, with them eventually signing him permanently, winning multiple Eredivisie titles and captaining the club. After a final spell with Boavista, he retired in February at the age of 33, making him the youngest player on this list.

James Milner
Mr Longevity himself. No player in Premier League history has made more appearances in the competition than James Milner. With 658 to his name, no active player comes close to that figure, so it’ll be a while before anyone gets a sniff of breaking it.
Milner began his professional career as a winger with his hometown club, Leeds United. He went on to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton across 24 season in the Premier League where he transformed himself from a winger, to a central midfielder and then spent time playing at fullback for both Liverpool and Brighton.
Milner represented England 131 times overall from the under-16s, all the way up to senior level. The bulk of his success came with City and Liverpool, claiming seven domestic titles. That included three Premier League crowns, in addition to the 2018/19 Champions League with Liverpool.
Of all the names on this list, he’s the joint-oldest retiree at 40-years-old, after announcing at the beginning of June that his 24th season would be his last.

Kasper Schmeichel
As much as Kasper Schmeichel has represented a number of clubs across England, Scotland, Wales, France and Belgium, there’s one club he is most associated with: Leicester City.
The Danish international played 479 times for the Foxes in over 11 years spent in the Midlands. It was there that he, along with his Leicester teammates, overcame odds of 5000/1 to win the 2015/16 Premier League title. It was the first major trophy in Schmeichel’s career, and he’d follow it up with an FA Cup victory over Chelsea five years later.
Celtic Star Has Played Last Game for Club After New Bombshell Update
The 39-year-old has revealed he may never play professional football again.
Since then, Schmeichel has tasted league success twice more with Celtic, the team he concluded his playing days with. He was due to stay a further season in Glasgow, but decided to retire after a shoulder injury was forecast to keep him out for a year anyway.

Dimitri Payet
The streets won’t forget Dimitri Payet. The Frenchman set the Premier League alight for West Ham, scoring free-kick after free-kick. It only turned out to be a short spell in east London though, as he departed for his former club Marseille within just 18 months due to feeling homesick.
His most famous strike came in the Europa Conference League against PAOK in 2022. As he stood on the edge of the box, the corner was floated his way, taking it on the full and rifling it into the top corner. Add this to his free-kicks against Crystal Palace and Manchester United, and his sublime solo goal against Middlesbrough, and you have a player who possesses one of the finest goal catalogues in world football.
Payet called time on his career with Vasco da Gama in Brazil, after over 20 years spent playing as a professional. Despite featuring regularly for France since 2010, including a starring role in their Euro 2016 campaign, he sustained an injury that kept him out of the side that went on to win the World Cup in Russia, meaning that Payet retired without a major trophy to his name.

Ashley Young
Ashley Young brought the curtain down on an exceptional 23-year career in May, retiring at the age of 40 after a final season with Ipswich Town in the Championship.
Beginning at Watford, Young went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting wingers during spells with Aston Villa and Manchester United, before successfully reinventing himself as a full-back later in his career, earning a recall to the England squad as a result.
His trophy haul included a Premier League title, FA Cup and Europa League with Manchester United, as well as a Serie A crown with Inter Milan, where he’s one of only three Englishmen to capture the Italian title. The former England international earned 39 caps and made more than 750 club appearances before announcing his retirement.
He’s the joint-oldest retiring player on the list, alongside James Milner, who is also 40.

Oscar
Oscar has found success in a totally different way during his career. With an estimated net-worth nearing £100 million, the Brazilian is one of the richest figures in football. At just 25 years old, he was at the peak of his powers at Chelsea, helping them to two Premier League titles, but China beckoned.
Oscar moved to Shanghai Port in 2016 for £60 million, joining fellow-Brazilian Hulk at the club. He was the highest paid footballer in the world at the time of his signing, but the Chinese spending was eventually curbed by their government in 2017, when they imposed a 100 per cent tax penalty for any foreign player clubs purchased. But in 2019, he signed a perfectly timed contract extension with Shanghai just before a salary cap was introduced.
Oscar spent seven years in China, earning a reported £400,000 per week, before he ended his career back home in Brazil. He’d have likely played on for longer, but a heart condition which led to him collapsing and requiring CPR in a training session forced him to opt for retrirement.

Diego Costa
Diego Costa was one of those strikers that no defender looked forward to playing against. At his peak, Costa had pace and strength in abundance, and the finishing ability to go with it. But it was his style of play that got under everyone’s skin. Some might say dirty tactics, others would say gamesmanship, but Costa was a master of frustrating his opponents, with many often being booked for reacting in the exact way he wanted.
Diego Costa Clashes With Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel in Chelsea Legends Game
In the charity game for Liverpool and Chelsea, Costa rolled back the years by clashing with Skrtel.
Despite starting his professional career in 2006, Costa didn’t put himself in the spotlight until the 2012/13 season, when he formed a formidable partnership with Atletico Madrid teammate, Radamel Falcao. Costa was the subject of a bid from Liverpool at the end of that same season, who apparently matched his release clause the year before his £32 million move to Chelsea a year later. It was there that Costa’s gamesmanship and ability was on full display.
Costa scored 52 Premier League goals and had a number of notable incidents with a host of players in just three seasons at Chelsea. After returning to Atletico, he spent time in Brazil before a surprise return to the Premier League five years later with Wolves, but he managed just one goal. Costa played his last professional match in 2024, but it wasn’t until earlier this year when he appeared on a podcast that he confirmed his retirement.

Aaron Ramsey
At 35, Aaron Ramsey brought the curtain down on a career that started in one of the worst ways possible. After securing a move to Arsenal from hometown team Cardiff, Ramsey suffered a double leg-break in February 2010 after a tackle from Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross. Initially the Gunners didn’t put a time on the Welshman’s recovery, but he found himself back on the pitch later that year.
Aaron Ramsey Names His Ultimate Teammates 11
Ramsey named five former Arsenal players in his ultimate teammates XI.
Ramsey went on to spend 11 years at Arsenal, winning three FA Cups. He was also a key player for Wales, who made it all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. He departed Arsenal and joined Juventus in 2019, where he was paid £400,000 per week, making him the highest-paid British player at the time.
After a short loan spell at Rangers and a season in France with Nice, Ramsey went home to Cardiff in 2023, where many presumed he’d finish his career. But after two years back in the Welsh capital, Ramsey packed his bags for the other side of the world, and spent the final months of his playing days in Mexico with Pumas UNAM, confirming his retirement in April 2026.

Mamadou Sakho
Mamadou Sakho enjoyed a career that took him from one of France’s brightest defensive prospects to a respected Premier League centre-back.
He’d been a product of the Paris Saint-Germain’s academy since joining in 2002 and captained the club for the first time at the age of just 17. The Frenchman made more than 200 appearances before earning a move to Liverpool in 2013. Sakho was part of the Liverpool team in his first season that suffered a late-season collapse, which included Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip (which Gerrard wanted to blame Sakho for.)
Steven Gerrard Once Asked Jamie Carragher To Blame Liverpool Teammate on Live TV
Over a decade on, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have revisited the slip that changed everything for Liverpool.
Sakho became a popular figure at Anfield thanks to his combative style and leadership, later enjoying a successful spell with Crystal Palace. The former France international won 29 senior caps and represented his country at the 2014 World Cup. After spells with Montpellier and Torpedo Kutaisi in Georgia, Sakho retired in January 2026.

Sean Strickland Held Nothing Back With X-Rated Tweet After UFC 330
UFC Middleweight Champion Sean Strickland unleashed a brutal x-rated rant after being left fuming by what he saw during this past weekend’s UFC 330 event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The card at the city’s Xfinity Mobile Arena was headlined by Islam Makhachev’s unanimous decision victory over Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry. Strickland, like millions of fans around the world, tuned in to catch one of the biggest fights of the summer.
However, it was the actions of veteran coach Din Thomas on the UFC 330 post-show that sent the 35-year-old American into a rage.
Thomas has been known to perform analyst duties for the UFC on big shows, but was primarily working as a cornerman on Saturday night, overseeing Gillian Robertson’s world title bid against defending UFC Strawweight Champion, Mackenzie Dern, in the co-main event.
A decorated fighter in his prime, Thomas holds victories over popular UFC legends such as Matt Serra, Jens Pulver and Clay Guida.
However, he was unable to help steer Robertson to a victory. Dern held off a late surge from the Canadian to win via unanimous decision, in what was the inaugural defense of her title.
It was ultimately a disappointing night for Robertson, who had been on a five-fight winning-streak prior to taking on Dern. The challenger was beaten comprehensively in the first three rounds of the fight, just about surviving an opening round deep rear-naked choke. She made a late bid to turn the tide in the fifth and final round, but it was never going to be enough to take the win.
Speaking on the post-show, Thomas couldn’t hide his disappointment at the result and shocked his colleagues at the broadcast desk by making a surprise announcement about his future as a cornerman.
“I told myself I would continue to do this until I took Gillian as far as she could go,” Thomas stated on the live UFC 330 broadcast. I think that might be as far as she can go, and I am officially retiring from cornering fighters tonight,” the 49-year-old added.
While Thomas was undoubtedly emotional about the result, as it appeared he was putting down his fighter when she was at her lowest moment following a tough defeat in the biggest fight of her career.
Sean Strickland’s X-Rated Tweet After Watching UFC 330
Among those to have a major issue with Thomas’ handling of the situation was Strickland, who took to social media to call out the comments, pointing out that he had suffered setbacks in his career before going on to achieve greatness in the Octagon.
“Din Thomas is a f****** c***. I’ve had my ass kicked in multiple weight classes through my career and won two titles. You’re a d*******. It’s probably better you retire. You’re a s*** coach,” Strickland declared.
“You only lose when you quit… Din sounds like you’re a f****** loser!”
In the wake of Strickland’s tweet, Thomas has apologized for his comments, admitting he was “ashamed and embarrassed” by them.
Speaking about the controversy on the Deep Waters podcast, Thomas issued a full apology to Robertson, during which he stated:
“I selfishly stole her moment that night, and instead of congratulating her on her run, I stole her moment. And I want to apologize to her for that because I stole her moment, and I was completely wrong.
“I’ve always had your back, and I want you to know that I’m always here for you,” he told Robertson. “I’m always going to support you, and whatever you need, I’m always here for you, the same way I’ve been for you the last seven years when it was just us.”
As of now, though, Thomas has yet to indicate that he will return to coaching.

Man Utd Injury Update on 8 Stars Ahead of Premier League Opener vs Hull
Manchester United are preparing for their Premier League opener for the 2026/27 season against Hull City on Saturday afternoon, and Michael Carrick already knows what players are likely to be available for the game.
The Red Devils completed their pre-season campaign with a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan, now managed by former boss Ruben Amorim, this past weekend, and all preparations will now turn towards their trip to the MKM Stadium.
After a summer World Cup which saw several Old Trafford stars unavailable for much of the pre-season clashes that saw them play in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Norway, there have been question marks about the availability of certain players for the game. But the situation is now much clearer following the final pre-season game.

Matthijs De Ligt
De Ligt suffered a back injury in November 2025 following a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and despite it initially being described minor, the Netherlands international hasn’t played since.
In fact, the centre-back was forced to undergo surgery during the summer, and while he has now returned to first-team training, he is not expected to be available to play for a little while longer.
De Ligt didn’t feature at all during pre-season and will need to build up some minutes before being ready for the first-team, which may come after the international break.
Tom Heaton
The veteran goalkeeper signed a new one-year extension at the club this summer to stay as part of the squad, but he suffered a hamstring injury during the recent pre-season friendly clash against PSG.
Heaton was highly unlikely to play in the Premier League anyway, having never appeared in the competition before for the club, but he is now unlikely to be available for a period of time as a result of the injury. Senne Lammens will be first-choice, and should start against Hull.
Benjamin Sesko
A successful first season with Man Utd for Sesko was ended abruptly after he was forced off injury in the 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford in May with a shin injury.
It was expected that the issue was relatively minor, but Sesko has been unable to recover over the summer and is yet to feature at all during pre-season. The Slovenia international is now highly unlikely to be fit to start against Hull as a result, although he could potentially return and claim a spot on the substitutes bench.
Manuel Ugarte
Manuel Ugarte wasn’t expected to be a Man Utd player this summer with the club looking to move him on two summers after his arrival from PSG, but the Uruguay international suffered a serious knee injury at the World Cup and that move was called off.
Now the midfielder faces a long rehabilitation phase as he recovers from surgery on his ACL, and he won’t be available for the rest of the year, with a return in February or March looking most likely.
Mason Mount
Mount has had an injury-hit spell at Old Trafford since joining from Chelsea three years ago, but looked set to have a new role under Carrick this season after being deployed in a deeper midfield role during pre-season.
His performances were impressive and had him in line for a start, before he suffered an injury in the first-half of the draw with PSG, which has caused him to miss the following two games against Leeds and AC Milan.
The club have said that it’s a minor injury and him missing those games was a precaution, but his injury record suggests it could end up being more, and he should be considered a doubt for the Premier League opener.
Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo returned to Man Utd following a disappointing World Cup where he didn’t play a single minute for Thomas Tuchel, and he missed the third-place playoff win over France due to a minor injury.
But the midfield sensation is now fit and made his first appearance of pre-season during the defeat to AC Milan as a second-half substitute. He’s available to play, but a lack of preparation so far this season means he could start on the bench, with summer signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans more likely to get the nod.
Fees correct prior to summer 2026
All 10 found — excellent!
Lisandro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez returned from a serious knee injury last season and became a key member of the team under Carrick in the second half of the campaign. He was then key for Argentina as they reached a second consecutive World Cup final, before being forced off with an injury during the defeat to Spain.
But Martinez’s thigh problem was minor and the defender played 30 minutes in the pre-season clash with AC Milan at the weekend. He’s fit and available to play should Carrick pick him, but Ayden Heaven has impressed throughout pre-season and seems more likely to get the nod at this stage.
Karl Darlow
Darlow joined on a free transfer from Leeds this summer, but after undergoing a minor surgery at the end of the last campaign he has yet to don the shirt of his new employer.
The expectation is that he will be fit to be part of the squad in the near future, but much like Heaton, he isn’t expected to be picked before Senne Lammens anyway, so his absence isn’t a huge blow while the Belgian is fit and available.

Arsenal Must Hold Real Madrid To £77m Martin Zubimendi Ransom
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is supposedly pushing the La Liga giants to swoop for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, in what would be a head-turning move at the end of the transfer window.
The 27-year-old only arrived at the Emirates Stadium in a £55million move from Real Sociedad last season. Zubimendi’s first season in North London was an undoubted success, playing more than 4,000 minutes across 57 appearances as he helped the side to the Premier League title.
The Spaniard is known for doing the not-so-glamorous work in the centre of the park, but still chipped in with a solid six goals and three assists from defensive midfield. However, that does not necessarily mean that Arsenal should block all transfer offers.
Real Madrid interested in Arsenal midfielder
In a report, TEAMtalk claims that Real Madrid have already held discussions with Arsenal and that the player’s representatives are weighing up opportunities away from London. It’s added that the Gunners are open to selling Zubimendi, despite the midfielder having another four years left on his contract.
Real Madrid are said to be long-term admirers of Zubimendi, who was thoroughly impressive in La Liga with Real Sociedad. The player has made 180 appearances in the Spanish top flight.
The Galacticos are set to miss out on the signing of Manchester City man Rodri, who will sign for fierce rivals Barcelona, and are looking for an extra body in the centre of the park to allow Eduardo Camavinga to leave.
Martin Zubimendi offers Arsenal unique profile
Ultimately, Arsenal must not fight to sell Zubimendi. The Spaniard was a key cog in the title-winning machine last season and brings a calmness to proceedings. The player is only going to improve over the upcoming campaign, having now adjusted to the football and life in England.
It’s easy to understand where the transfer speculation comes from. Myles Lewis-Skelly had been preferred in midfield towards the end of last season and the marquee arrival of Bruno Guimaraes provides serious competition for Zubimendi.
Zubimendi was only handed a cameo off the bench against Manchester City in the Community Shield and will face a tougher fight to get into the side over the upcoming season.
