Labour Party sues INEC over exclusion from Enugu by-election

ABUJA — The Labour Party has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its exclusion from the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The seat became vacant following the death of Senator Okey Ezea on November 18, 2025.
The party said it had informed INEC on May 11, 2026 of its plan to conduct a primary in line with electoral guidelines, which held on May 25, 2026 and produced Ambassador Simon Ejike Eze as its candidate.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the party said it was denied access to INEC’s nomination portal to upload its candidate’s details despite complying with all requirements.
It added that repeated efforts to resolve the issue before the close of submissions on June 2, 2026 were unsuccessful.
The Labour Party faulted INEC officials in Enugu State for allegedly failing to transmit the primary report, citing the absence of a designated officer on the day of the exercise.
The party maintained that it met all legal obligations under the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, arguing that electoral rights should not be undermined by administrative lapses.
It further described its exclusion from the by-election as unjust, insisting it has a legitimate stake in the contest to fill the vacant seat.
While expressing confidence in INEC leadership, the party called for an investigation into the conduct of its Enugu officials and possible sanctions where necessary.
The Labour Party also urged its supporters to remain calm, saying it has confidence in the judiciary to resolve the matter.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, says he has evidence that the African Democratic Congress, ADC, primary election was rigged.
Featuring in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Monday, Lawal said he was in the field and monitored the exercise.
He said whatever the supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said was not true, adding that a thief would not accept he is a thief.
“Don’t forget I was the National Vice Chairman (Northeast). I was in the field during the exercise, so I have evidence.
“Atiku’s people are the ones lying by trying to deny what they did. We are all human beings. We know what they did.
“I knew the primary was rigged at the point it was being done and the results being declared,” he said.

Reports have emerged suggesting that former Adamawa State Governor, Bindow Jibrilla, may be considering a return to the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
The claim was made by political commentator Imran Wakili in a post on X on Monday.
According to Wakili, indications from political circles in Adamawa State suggest that Bindow could leave the ADC within days amid growing dissatisfaction with recent developments within the party in the state.
Wakili further alleged that the former governor feels his years of loyalty to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were taken for granted
He wrote: “Whispers making rounds in Adamawa suggests that former Governor Bindow Jibrilla may be on his way out of the ADC and back to the APC within days.
“According to what I gathered, the former governor feels deeply disappointed by recent events within the Adamawa ADC and believes his years of steadfast loyalty to Atiku Abubakar and the political structure have not been adequately appreciated and have been taken for granted.”
DAILY POST reports that neither Bindow nor the ADC had officially commented on the claim as of the time of filing this report.
Bindow, a former APC governor of Adamawa State, has remained an influential figure in the state’s political landscape, with his next political move likely to attract attention ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has claimed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar did little to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket before emerging as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election.
Lawal made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, days after resigning from the ADC over the controversial primary election that produced Atiku as the party’s flag bearer.
The former SGF said he and other party members had expected a keen contest among the leading aspirants and were particularly impressed by the efforts of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
“Someone like Rotimi Amaechi was very confident that if we go to primaries he would win. Everybody around him was extremely confident that Amaechi would win,” Lawal said.
“And for me, who has been in this process, I was watching the indices to see where his confidence was coming from. Among the three candidates, he was the one moving around, working hard to see that he got the ticket.”
Lawal contrasted Amaechi’s activities with what he described as Atiku’s low-profile approach to the contest.
“Then, we have Atiku Abubakar. That time we used to wonder what is he going to do to win the primary because he was practically not doing much. He was not talking, he was not campaigning, he wasn’t going out,” he said.
“We were wondering how was he going to do it? So, we were watching how it was going to be done.”
Lawal recently resigned from the ADC following the party’s presidential primary, alleging irregularities in the process and accusing Atiku of manipulating the exercise in his favour.
The former SGF has remained one of the strongest critics of the outcome of the primary and has repeatedly argued that the process did not reflect the wishes of party members.
