Qualified Teams & How it Works

Published

on

With the 2026 World Cup well underway, the end of the group stage is on the horizon and fans are starting to ask the same question: what’s our potential draw like?

Well, that depends on multiple factors; the biggest being all the group games being completed. Many fans are getting carried away with who they could be facing after just two games, whereas there is still a lot to be decided. Then, we head into the knockouts of this extended competition in the Round of 32, Round of 16 and so on.

Despite that, there are still some routes that can be planned and ruled out and, with all the noise of the global tournament, here’s the definitive answers to all the qualification quandaries and potential match-ups.

After just two games, we can highlight teams in every group who have already secured qualification to the next phase of the competition. Even if their final position isn’t secured yet. Of course, there are also the best ‘third-placed’ teams to consider as well. However, while we can point towards the ‘as it stands’ table, it is very much subject to change daily until the end of the group stage.

The early qualifiers include the teams who have gone 100 per cent: those include Mexico, USA, Germany, France, Norway, Colombia and Argentina. It ensures their final outings are nothing but a formality, as top spot is already confirmed. However, France will face Norway to confirm who will reign supreme in Group I.

In addition, the host countries, USA and Mexico, have started strong, lifted by their incredible home support that has seen them qualify after just two games. Canada are also well-placed to join them as all three look set to be involved in the next stage of the competition.

At the other end of the spectrum are the teams who have already been eliminated. The biggest shock? Undoubtedly, Turkey. Everyone’s favorite ‘Dark Horses’ pick bowed out of Group D without scoring a goal, having been shocked by Australia in their opening game and Paraguay in their second.

Both Iraq and Senegal faced tough opposition from France and Norway, with both of their respective talismanic figures in Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe hitting top form, whilst Jordan, Uzbekistan, Panama and Tunisia also exited early.

With an extended World Cup for the first time in history, the addition of 16 more teams has resulted in more games, more drama — and an enhanced tournament bracket.

Eagle-eyed fans have been rushing to the ‘as it stands’ bracket to see who awaits them in the first round of the knockouts, which is the Round of 32. Typically, it would be just two teams from eight groups who qualify straight into the Round of 16. However, this time there are new rules.

Twelve groups will result in 24 teams qualifying for the next stage and the rest of the numbers are made up of the best third-placed teams. The best eight teams to finish third, to be precise. This ensures that there is plenty to play for as we head into the final round of games.

World Cup 2026 Top Scorers: Players with Most Goals in Race for Golden Boot

The battle for the World Cup Golden Boot is already heating up, with a number of familiar faces and a few surprise standouts in contention.

What we can see is the different sides of the draw that teams are on; it tells us who England is likely to play in the semi-finals should they reach it, for example.

England could face the likely route of Mexico in the Last 16, Brazil in the quarter-finals and Argentina in the semis if all goes as predicted. Below that, the most eye-catching affair would be Argentina facing off against fellow South American rivals, Colombia, in the quarters before a potential super-clash against Portugal — that would see Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo on the biggest stage.

In the top half of the draw, there may be match-ups that include Germany vs France in the Last 16, with the winner facing the Netherlands in the quarters. Whilst many will have their eye on Spain versus France in the semi-finals as a probable outcome.

However, all is to be decided in the final round of games as there is plenty to play for.

Donald Trump Administration Make World Cup Decision Over Iran Before Egypt Game

Published

By

Iran’s preparations for their 2026 World Cup campaign have been pure chaos, with travel restrictions causing constant disruption at every avenue.

The squad’s situation differed from other competing nations due to their well-documented conflict with the US in the Middle East, with changes and limitations affecting their preparations for the tournament before they even arrived on US soil, and then affecting them pre-and post-match as well.

That imbalance enhanced frustrations within the camp, leading to a complaint being made to FIFA. Now, just days before a pivotal group stage clash, the Trump Administration has stepped in yet again, with another revised set of arrangements.

Iran’s base camp was switched from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, just weeks before the tournament kicked off, and the squad have since been restricted to crossing into the US only a day before kick-off, departing again soon after the final whistle. That left little room for the side to settle into unfamiliar surroundings before facing opponents who enjoyed considerably longer preparation windows.

FIFA has reportedly approved the move.

According to The Mirror, the Department of Homeland Security has now amended those protocols ahead of Friday’s meeting with Egypt in Seattle. A spokesperson told NBC News that Iran will be permitted to arrive two days before the match rather than one, though they will still be required to leave for Tijuana on the evening of the game itself.

“Ahead of the match in Seattle on June 26, the Iranian team will be allowed to come in match day minus two, so two days before the match. They’ll be asked to leave the day that the match wraps up, so the evening of the match.”

“Again, the President wants to make sure that we’re talking about what actually happens on the pitch. A lot of that is making sure that things are safe and secure, not just around the stadiums, but around base camps and training sites.”

Andrew Giuliani, who heads the Trump Administration’s FIFA Task Force, had hinted the arrangements around Iran could be revisited, though earlier requests for changes ahead of the team’s first two group games were turned down.

Authorities had previously insisted Iran agreed to the original terms, despite mounting pressure from within the camp over the punishing schedule.

The timing of this latest concession is notable given where Iran sit in terms of their group. They opened with a frantic 2-2 draw against New Zealand before holding group favourites Belgium to a scoreless draw, leaving a heartfelt note in the changing room for the people of Los Angeles after playing two matches at SoFi Stadium.

Despite all the problems Iran have faced, both in the USA and back home, they are on course to qualify for the knockout stages.

Egypt remain the only team in the group to have won a match so far, and Friday’s meeting will, one way or another, decide who moves on to the knockout stages, with a possible collision course with the United States completely on the cards for Team Melli.

Tottenham Agree Deal to Sign Martin Dubravka

Published

Tottenham Hotspur have now agreed their fourth summer signing as ENIC go into overdrive, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham have already been the busiest club in the summer transfer window, having completed and announced three deals, as they look to give Roberto De Zerbi the strong squad he needs to make the club contenders at the right end of the Premier League table again.

The additions of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke have added experience and quality to a backline that has leaked goals for fun in recent years, with De Zerbi and the club still looking at making additions in other areas of the pitch.

Spurs are now working on two blockbuster midfielder deals as the club look to try and land both Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, with both players attracting interest from other top Premier League clubs this summer.

The North Londoners are also ready to transform their attack too, following the exit of Randal Kolo Muani after his unsuccessful loan spell, with Paul O’Keefe suggesting they want a left-winger, right-winger and a new centre-forward ahead of next season.

Tottenham are also looking to make a signing between the posts too.

Romano: Tottenham Agree Dubravka Deal

According to Romano, posting on X, Tottenham have now agreed their fourth signing of the summer as their business shows no signs of slowing down.

Spurs have wrapped up an agreement to sign Martin Dubravka on a free transfer, with his contract at Burnley due to expire at the end of this month.

The Slovakia international played 35 matches for the Clarets last season after joining them from Newcastle, but he was unable to stop them making an immediate return to the Championship.

The addition of the 37-year-old would suggest that one of Tottenham’s goalkeepers will be on their way out, with Guglielmo Vicario the most likely candidate following rumours he will return to Serie A this summer.

Bringing in Dubravka would also hint at Antonin Kinsky becoming De Zerbi’s first-choice keeper next term after an impressive end to the campaign under the leadership of the Italian.

De Zerbi Tells Tottenham to Sign Man United Star

Tottenham’s current focus appears to be on trying to wrap up deals for Dubravka, Fernandes and Tonali, but after that they will need to look at their attack.

Spurs are in talks with Manchester City over a move for Savinho, although no progress has been made in negotiations yet.

Tottenham are looking at other left-sided alternatives to the Brazilian if reports are to be believed, with one report suggesting that De Zerbi is pushing the club to agree a deal to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

The England international is currently likely to leave Old Trafford this summer, although the Red Devils are keen to sell the 28-year-old on a permanent deal, with a £40m release clause available for all clubs apart from Liverpool and Manchester City.

Spurs are said to be unwilling to pay that amount, but they are exploring making a lower offer for a player who De Zerbi is a big fan of.

Jude Bellingham Avoids Red Card For Banned Gesture vs Ghana

Published

on

By

England laboured to a disappointing goalless draw with Ghana in their second World Cup fixture, failing to register a shot on target for almost an hour.

The closest the Three Lions came arrived late on, when Nico O’Reilly’s close-range header cannoned off the crossbar and Harry Kane’s follow-up was smashed high into the stands.

At half-time, Jude Bellingham was involved in a foul-mouthed altercation with the Ghanaian bench, drawing Carlos Queiroz into the confrontation, with the Ghana boss later claiming the midfielder’s choice of language created “more tension” between the two camps.

Bellingham was also at the centre of a separate issue that went largely unnoticed amid the chaos and the goalless affair: a question over whether he should have been sent off.

Why Jude Bellingham Risked Being Sent off

While the half-time spat with Queiroz drew most of the attention, it was a quieter exchange with Ghana forward Jordan Ayew that carried the greater risk for Bellingham.

Cameras caught the midfielder speaking to Ayew while covering his mouth, a gesture FIFA has specifically targeted under new rules introduced for this tournament.

Referees can now dismiss players for hiding their mouth during exchanges, a measure brought in following the fallout from Gianluca Prestianni’s six-match ban for homophobic language directed at Vinicius Junior during a Champions League tie in February.

Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron already felt the force of the new law this tournament, when he was sent off against Turkey after VAR flagged the gesture to the referee. Bellingham avoided the same fate because his exchange with Ayew was not deemed confrontational.

England's Greatest 11

England’s Greatest 11 of the 21st Century

A nation that has produced a lot of talent, we look at England’s greatest 11 of the 21st century.

The rule only applies when the gesture accompanies a hostile interaction, meaning Ayew’s lack of a reaction likely kept Bellingham on the pitch, whereas Turkey’s Mert Mulder made an immediate beeline for the referee.

Pierluigi Collina Explains FIFA’s Reasoning Behind the Rule

FIFA referees committee chairman Pierluigi Collina addressed the law before the tournament began, making clear the intent behind the crackdown.

“If the conversation is friendly, they can continue to do it without any problem. When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card.”

Had officials viewed the moment differently, England would have been without one of their talismans for this weekend’s pivotal Group L finale, leaving Thomas Tuchel’s side to wonder just how close they came to a damaging twist on top of an already frustrating night in Boston.
