The Vice-Chancellor of the Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), Prof. Timothy Terseer Alabar, has disclosed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged killing of a lecturer of the institution, Prof. Gabriel Saawuan Nyityo.
He made the disclosure on Monday while responding to questions from journalists in Makurdi.

Late Nyityo, a professor in the Department of History, was killed by unknown gunmen on July 7, 2026, at his residence in Makurdi along with his younger sibling by suspected gunmen.

Prof Alaba described the incident as a major setback to the university and the department of History.

He said that five arrests had been made, with the suspects reportedly from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, based on briefs from security agencies.

Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity cult group and recovered a locally made Beretta pistol and a live 9mm ammunition during an operation in the Mushin area of the state.

The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, following intelligence on the activities of suspected cult groups in Mushin.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the operation began with the arrest of a suspect identified as Irawo Moshod.

The police said Moshod, who allegedly admitted to being a former chairman of the Aiye Confraternity, provided information that led investigators to other suspected members of the group and the recovery of a firearm.

The Command alleged that the suspect also made disclosures concerning the activities of the group, including his alleged involvement in several killings in Mushin and other parts of Lagos State.

Acting on information obtained during the investigation, VCRU operatives reportedly proceeded to Idi-Oro, Mushin, where they recovered a locally made Beretta pistol and one live 9mm ammunition.

The police subsequently arrested three other suspected members of the group at Aganran by Ojuwoye.

They were identified as 29-year-old Abayomi James, 28-year-old Farouq Bankole and 19-year-old Steven Sunday.

According to the Command, the three suspects admitted to being members of the Aiye Confraternity and told investigators that the recovered firearm was allegedly obtained from a man identified as Rilwan, whom they described as the group’s number one member.

The police said the four suspects remained in custody and were assisting investigators with the ongoing probe, while efforts were being intensified to apprehend other suspected members of the group.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the VCRU operatives for what he described as a proactive and intelligence-led operation against cult-related criminal activities.

Fatai reaffirmed the Command’s determination to dismantle criminal networks and strengthen security across the state.

He also warned cult groups and other criminal elements to abandon their activities or face prosecution under the law.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police to facilitate swift intervention.

Seventeen suspected bandits and 10 police officers were killed on Monday during a clash between security personnel and a large group of armed men moving from Zamfara State towards Kebbi State.

Two civilians were also killed in the incident, which happened around the Rafin Makuku area of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, according to the police.

Residents said the armed group was made up of about 240 bandits travelling on more than 200 motorcycles. They reportedly came from the Sangeko Gap area of Dansadau District in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A resident of Makuku, Malam Musa Sani, said the bandits moved in three groups and spent the night in a forest between Kakihum and Makuku before heading towards Maburya on Monday morning.

According to him, the attackers met a mobile police checkpoint while trying to enter the community and overpowered the officers.

“The bandits killed 10 mobile policemen and two civilians and carted away their rifles,” he alleged.

The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Bashir Usman, confirmed the attack and said 17 suspected bandits had so far been neutralised.

“This morning, our men intercepted and engaged a heavily armed group of suspected bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area,” he said.

Usman said four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were also burnt during the operation, noting that the casualty figures were still being verified.

“Tragically, we lost 10 gallant police personnel in the engagement, while two others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. Two civilians also lost their lives during the encounter,” he said.

He described the officers who died as brave personnel who fought with courage and professionalism while carrying out their duties.

The police spokesperson said the command would focus on supporting the families of the officers who died, treating those injured and continuing operations to track down the fleeing suspects.
