A motorist was left in a pool of blood after an unidentified driver allegedly fled the scene of a hit-and-run crash around Ketu, inward Ojota, Lagos.

A statement by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, said the incident occurred over the weekend, with officers rescuing the critically injured victim and securing the accident scene.

The victim was found alive but in critical condition after suffering multiple traumatic injuries, including severe fractures and a serious head injury.

According to LASTMA, the unidentified motorist struck the victim and fled, leaving him helpless and unattended at the scene.

LASTMA officers who arrived at the scene quickly secured the area, controlled traffic and took steps to prevent further danger to the injured victim and other road users.

The victim was still breathing when the officers arrived but required urgent and specialised medical attention.

The officers immediately alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, whose medical personnel arrived at the scene to assess the victim and determine the appropriate emergency response.

Following their assessment, the medical personnel reportedly expressed serious concern over the extent of the victim’s injuries, particularly the multiple fractures and severe head trauma.

They noted that the victim required a medical facility with the capacity and specialised resources to provide comprehensive trauma care.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the alleged abandonment of the victim by the unidentified motorist.

He described the action as reprehensible and irresponsible, stressing that motorists involved in crashes have a moral and legal duty to stop, assess the situation, contact emergency responders and, where possible, assist injured persons.

“The decision by a motorist to flee the scene of a crash, particularly where another person has sustained life-threatening injuries, is deeply reprehensible and could have devastating consequences.

“In emergencies of this nature, every second is consequential. While our officers remain committed to responding swiftly to road crashes and other emergencies, members of the public must also demonstrate a corresponding sense of responsibility by promptly alerting the appropriate emergency agencies and cooperating with responders,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He also appealed to eyewitnesses, motorists and members of the public with credible information that could help identify and apprehend the fleeing motorist to provide such information to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said some cookies and gummies in circulation contain illegal substances and has advised parents to monitor their children’s consumption of imported snacks that could pose a danger to their health.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the agency uncovered attempts by smugglers to import prohibited substances packaged as everyday sweets and baked goods.

According to the statement, “A major interception by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, where officers seized two 40-foot containers originating from the United States.”

He explained that legitimate imports, including vehicles, generators and fabrics, were found to contain thousands of cannabis-infused cookies and gummies with an estimated street value of N373.8 million.

NDLEA officials said the seized items, which have been handed over to the agency for further investigation, were packaged as colourful, appealing vegan snacks, posing a public health risk through potential accidental consumption by children and young people.

Flood has wreaked havoc in parts of Minna, the Niger State capital, destroying properties estimated at over N100 million and displacing several residents of the metropolitan city.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday following a heavy downpour that overwhelmed parts of Imani community in Minna South and M.I. Wushishi area of the metropolis.

A former Chairman of the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abdullahi Idris, and a community leader in the affected area confirmed the development in a statement made available to journalists.

According to them, several houses were submerged, while vehicles, electrical appliances, fences and other valuables were damaged by the flood.

At M.I. Wushishi Housing estate, Tunga, Maitunbi, Chanchaga and Shango areas during a visit by DAILY POST, residents said the heavy rain destroyed fences, houses and swept away everything that stood on its part .

Members of the M.I. Wushishi Housing estate at the Eastern-Bypass of Minna, stated that floodwater swept through parts of the community, carrying debris and damaging houses, vehicles, a mosque and an Islamic school.

The residents blamed the worsening situation partly on inadequate drainage infrastructure, which they said had left communities vulnerable whenever there was heavy rainfall.

They also raised concerns over a dam reportedly constructed in the area by a man identified as Captain Taylor, saying the situation had become more severe in recent years.

The affected residents appealed to the Niger State Government, humanitarian organisations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to urgently intervene, provide relief to displaced families and address the drainage challenges responsible for recurring flooding.

They warned that without urgent measures, further heavy rainfall could result in more destruction and put lives and property at greater risk.
