Anambra police rescue woman accused of trying to steal infant from mob action

A 37-year old woman, Anurika Nweme, has been rescued from an angry mob after she was accused of invading a hospital with intent to abduct a new born for sale.

The woman was said to have been apprehended by persons in Divine Mercy Hospital, Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi, Anambra State, after she dressed like a nurse to gain access into the hospital, making a recording of a newborn child, while allegedly making a secret phone call to some people about the gender of the baby they want.

A press release by the Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the woman was taken away by police operatives after a crowd attempted to lynch her.

The release also stated that investigation have commenced to ascertain the truth in the matter, if truly her mission was to steal a newborn.

In a video seen online, a nursing mother who had just been delivered of a baby boy said the woman approached her and was asking the gender of her baby, and later started making calls to tell someone on the other end about the gender available.

Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident following the rescue of a female suspect Anurika Nweme aged 37 years from an angry mob by Police Operatives attached to Awada Divisional Headquarters at Divine Mercy Hospital, Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi.

“According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect in the afternoon of 23rd June 2026 allegedly gained access to the hospital premises disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse and was observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies in the maternity ward. 

“When questioned by hospital staff and other persons present, she reportedly claimed to be an employee of the hospital. However, upon verification, the management of the Hospital confirmed that she was not a member of its staff.

“The suspect is currently in protective custody and assisting the investigating police officers in identifying others involved,” the spokesperson said.

Travel agent added woman as my wife in visa application – UK-based Nigerian tells court

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Emmanuel Opeyemi Makinde, has a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court that his travel agent, Mr Waliyu Aderibigbe Shitta, fraudulently added an unknown woman to his visa application in 2022 as his wife.

Opeyemi, while testifying in his evidence-in-chief before the court presided by Justice Ademuyiwa Oyeyipo, stated that the travel agent added one Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf, as his legally married wife without his knowledge.

He disclosed that the agent was introduced to him by his pastor, Mr Aregbesola Sanyanolu of Celestial Church of Christ, Jerusalem Parish, Ado-Ekiti.

Opeyemi further informed the court that your information provided by the agent later created serious problems for him with the UK authorities when he decided to bring his wife to the United Kingdom.

The travel agent, Shitta, is standing trial before the court for allegedly arranging a fraudulent marriage for Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf in order to facilitate her travel abroad, using Opeyemi’s identity.

Opeyemi told the court, “Throughout my dealings with the defendant, I consistently informed him (Shitta) that I was single for the purpose of my UK student visa application. After my wife completed her studies in 2024, I submitted an application for her to join me in the United Kingdom.

“One day while I was at work, I received an email from the UK Home Office requesting that I provide official evidence demonstrating that my partner’s previous marriage had been officially dissolved by the relevant court.

“I immediately sent a voice note to the defendant together with a screenshot of the Home Office email, explaining the consequences of the message I had received. After viewing the message, he blocked me on WhatsApp.

“I then contacted my pastor and informed him that we needed to report the defendant to the authorities. However, my pastor stopped responding to my messages and calls.

“Two days later, I replied to the Home Office and informed them that I had never been married to any woman other than my wife. The visa application was refused because the Home Office believed that I already had a marriage on record in the United Kingdom.”

Opeyemi also told the court that the agent instructed him to answer “yes” when he was asked during his biometric appointment whether all supporting documents had been uploaded.

He stressed that at no point did he instruct Shitta to include Miss Dolapo Afusat Yusuf as his wife in any visa application.

According to him, he consistently informed the defendant that he was applying for the visa alone and that there was no dependant on his application.

The matter was adjourned till October 7, 2026, for the continuation of Opeyemi’s evidence before the court.

Police arrest two suspected kidnappers connected to failed abduction in Delta

Operatives of “A” Division in collaboration with members of a local vigilante group in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have arrested two suspected kidnappers connected to a failed kidnap attempt that occurred on 19 June 2026.

The suspects,, Iliyasu Hassan and Idris Abdulkarim were arrested on 22 June 2026 at about 2030hrs.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the report in a statement in Warri.

Edafe said the suspects were arrested after emerging from a nearby forest to purchase food and medication. 

The Police Image maker said, “Following their arrest, a victim of an earlier kidnapping incident positively identified the suspects as among his attackers.”

According to SP Edafe, “The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.”

He noted that , “Efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the criminal gang and recover weapons used in their operations.”

Amotekun corps rescues eight kidnapped victims in Ondo

Operatives of the Amotekun Corps have rescued eight kidnapped victims in Ondo State after a successful operation against their abductors.

The Ondo State Commander of Amotekun, Akogun Adeleye, who disclosed this in a statement, said the victims were rescued without payment of any ransom.

According to him, some of the victims were kidnapped from the Ilado community in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

He added that one of the rescued victims, Fagbonmire Durojaiye, is a pastor and teacher and serves with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG.

He added that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N30 million for the victims before their release was secured.

The Commander further revealed that the operation involved a gun battle between the kidnappers and Amotekun operatives before the victims were successfully freed.
